Annual Report 2016

Our purpose The Humane Societyʼs Pets Fur People provides a temporary haven for the animals in our care, until they find their forever families. Pets Fur People impact in East Texas In 2016, we estimate we served 6,747 people in 14 counties around Tyler, including seniors, Meals on Wheels clients, Scouts, students, volunteers, and people visiting the shelter. HISTORY The Tyler Morning Telegraph recently stated that 10,000 animals are left homeless each year in East Texas. The Humane Society was founded in 1963 after animal lovers in Tyler visited the city run animal impoundment facility and were appalled at the conditions. We opened our doors in 1968 to work with the City of Tyler to house the dogs, cats, and everything else, except horses and cows, that were picked up by Tyler Animal Control. We also housed animals from Animal Control agencies including Smith County, Lindale, Bullard,Whitehouse, Troup, and Hideaway. During that time, we housed approximately 400,000 animals. Our responsibility was to return those animals to their owners, adopt them or humanely euthanize them. In 2008, we made the moral decision to become the only selective admission, no-kill animal sanctuary in East Texas. At the beginning of 2010 that dream became a reality. At our tree shaded campus in Tyler, Texas, 80 miles east of Dallas, we have the capacity to care for 75 dogs and 28 cats. Every animal under our care is now safe from the threat of euthanasia for as long as it takes us to find them a home. We know we cannot save every animal but we can and do make a big difference each and every day. We have come a long way from taking over the city pound 49 years ago. "Every animal at Pets Fur People has a story. Wherever they started, they weren t welcome." Executive Director s note In 2016, the Humane Society s Pets Fur People celebrated its 48 years of service to the animals and residents in East Texas. Since 2010, we have been the only brick and mortar selective admissions no kill animal shelter in East Texas. We continue to be a ministry helping people through pets. Our passion and compassion for the animals in our care is obvious the moment you enter our facility. In 2016, we received 548 animals and adopted 539 making our adoption rate 98%. The other 2% are safe and waiting for their forever family. We are a donation based nonprofit organization and receive no government funding. Gayle Helms Gayle Helms, Tyler

ADOPTION STORIES The Humane Society s Pets Fur People is a no-kill, selective admission animal shelter for dogs and cats. We are the only brick-and-mortar, no-kill shelter in the East Texas. A second chance! HARRY Betty s life began to change for the better once Harry entered her life. Harry was wandering the streets before he was rescued by a Good Samaritan and brought to our shelter. Until she adopted Harry, Betty did not realize how terribly lonely she was. Betty has this to say about Harry: Harry gives me love, companionship, protection, security, exercise and fun! Nothing else quite matches the unconditional love of a dog. JESSIE Jessie is another one of our success stories. She needed rehabilitation and received extra loving care from our staff for almost three years. Adopted families say it best and here is what her new Mom has to say about Jessie: She is blossoming before our eyes! She has gone on 3 truck rides and visited our 10 acres where we will be building a home soon. Our boy dog is her comfort zone. Without him she would be struggling but she watches him trusting us and then she interacts. She likes to lick faces and get her belly rubbed. She is also learning the doggy door. I want people to understand that these dogs that have had difficult pasts just need a chance. They just need someone to give them time to heal and love again. We love her! Thank you all! SAMPSON BROWN Hello All at Pets Fur People, Our time with Sampson Brown has been great and we are in love! Sampson Brown is a very intelligent dog that learns quickly. Our apartment is on the third floor, and the first day we brought him home, we had to carry him up the stairs because he was too scared to use the stairs. By the third day Sampson Brown used the stairs with no problem! He has also already learned to sit and shake your hand with his paw. Sampson loves to take naps with us as long as he has his favorite toy duck. He has proven to be a very good dog and I look forward to making more memories with him. Thank you all for helping bring this blessing into my life!

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Meals on Wheels We partner with Meals on Wheels Ministry in our Meals Fur Pets project. Donated dry pet food is repackaged for delivery, twice a month, to Meals on Wheels clients for their house pets. This project began, serving approximately 50 Meals on Wheels clients, and has increased this service to approximately 250 clients in 6 counties. President and CEO, Mike Powell said that dogs and cats provide invaluable companionship to elderly men and women who may not have any other regular visitors. We will have succeeded when we prevent one pet from being surrendered because the owner cannot afford food for their pet! Boy Scouts of America PFP is committed to serve as an example for young leaders in our community. Boy Scouts have earned their Merit badges and a Girl Scout completed her Gold Award at PFP. With Eagle Scouts completing the fencing, we were delighted to open a dog park on our campus. It is free, open to the public, and in the event of a disaster it could be used as an emergency destination. PFP is also partnering with Tyler ISD s Career and Technology Center to give students hands on experience in design, fabrication, and construction by building structures for our campus. Blessing of the Animals The Humane Society s Pets Fur People celebrates the Blessing of the Animals at Saint Francis Episcopal Church. The public is invited to bring their pets and participate in this heartwarming ceremony. This custom is in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi s love for all creatures. This ceremony includes a special prayer for pets and a group blessing. DONATIONS Memorial and honor gifts You can honor a loved one by making a gift to The Humane Society s Pets Fur People in their name. Memorialize their love for animals by providing pets with the care they need and deserve. Pave the Way program gifts Make your honor or memorial permanent by purchasing an engraved brick that will be installed in our Pets Fur People garden in Tyler. Vehicle donations Give your used vehicle a new purpose. By donating your old car or truck to us, you are helping to provide exceptional care to animals. And, the sale price is 100% tax deductible. Foundation gifts and corporate sponsorships The Humane Society s Pets Fur People collaborates with a variety of philanthropic foundations and corporations who care about animal welfare. Make an impact in the East Texas community by investing in a partnership with the The Humane Society s Pets Fur People. Donor-advised funds Many people donate through a donor-advised fund. It s like having your own foundation, but without all the legal paperwork. Advise your sponsoring organization to donate to the The Humane Society s Pets Fur People to help animals in East Texas. Securities donation We believe every creature is important - the love we give to a pet, and receive from a pet is important to our well-being. Another way to support the The Humane Society s Pets Fur People is through the donation of appreciated securities such as stocks or mutual funds. Save tax money on capital gains and help animals and their forever home at the same time! IRA charitable rollover Did you know that the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act allows taxpayers age 70 1 2 or older to donate funds from their IRA accounts directly to a charity without having to recognize the distribution as income?

Thank you VOLUNTEERS VOLUNTEERS DO NOT NECESSARILY HAVE THE TIME; THEY HAVE THE HEART. Elizabeth Andrew Volunteers are the engine behind Pets Fur People Volunteers are vital to Pets Fur People. They take dogs for long walks in the sunshine. They help with socialization, encouraging the dogs to have positive interactions with people. They play with cats in the cattery. Our volunteers bag dog and cat food for clients of Meals on Wheels who need our assistance. (Several years ago, we discovered some clients were sharing their own meals with their pets.) Volunteers also visit nursing homes with furry friends. Painting and gardening are also on the list of chores. The fencing for our new, free dog park Star Park was entirely donated by Eagle Scouts. Our volunteers include groups of young people doing community service hours for high school graduation. Companies send employee teams. And, of course, individual cat and dog lovers are always welcome. Why they come doesn t matter. What we appreciate is the impact these volunteers have on the quality of life for the animals and the valuable help they provide to our staff.

FINANCIALS

SEEKING LOVE MERCY This girl was abandoned at Pets Fur People discarded because she couldn t have any more puppies! She was malnourished and full of heart worms. Today she is safe with us, heart worm free and happy. All Mercy needs now is a family to love her. HAVEN What a story Haven has to tell. We rescued her one cold day last winter. She was found, starving and afraid, in a cemetery, trying to find warmth in a pile of leaves. After visiting her daily for 2 weeks, Haven was ready for us to help her. She needed hip surgery for an old injury, heart worm treatment, good food and love. Surgery was performed on her hip and she is now heart worm free. We think Haven is a Cane Corso, about 7 years old. She is very sweet and gentle and would love to be somebody's lap dog. BONNIE & CLYDE Meet Bonnie & Clyde. This brother & sister were rescued from a busy highway by the staff of the Humane Society's Pets Fur People when we they were little puppies. They have been waiting and waiting for someone to make them part of their family. They are very sweet and desperately want someone to adopt them because it s the right thing to do.
