Chapter 4 Lesson 1 Pgs. 102-107 HOW SEA TURTLES GROW AND CHANGE STUDY SHEET Plants and animals are living things that need food and water. Animals can move but plants cannot. Both are able to become parents. Sea turtles live in the ocean but the females return to the each where they were born to lay their eggs. The dig holes with their flippers, lay eggs in a hole, and cover the hole with sand. A female turtle can lay as many as 200 eggs at one time. Most of the eggs won t make it. Sea turtle Flipper Sea turtle laying eggs Baby sea turtles are called hatchlings. After about 2 months the hatchlings use a special tooth to break through the egg. It takes them from three to seven days to dig their way to the surface. Hatchlings then quickly move towards the ocean. Sea turtles are endangered. This means that there are very few of them and that they re almost extinct. Life cycle- The way a living thing grows and changes. All living things grow and change. Sea turtle life cycle

Chapter 4 Lesson 2 Pgs 108-109 LIFE CYCLE OF A DRAGONFLY STUDY SHEET Insects have life cycle that are different from other animals. Nymph- A young insect that looks like its parent but has no wings. Nymphs hatch from eggs. They shed (molt) their outside covering many times as they grow. When they become adults, they have wings to fly. Dragonflies usually lay their eggs in the water. A nymph hatches from the dragonfly eggs and lives in the water for a short time. After a while, the nymph crawls to the land. The nymph will shed its outer covering (molt) many times and grow wings before it becomes an adult. Dragonflies eat mosquitoes, water fleas, and almost any other flying insect.

LIFE CYCLE OF A HORSE STUDY SHEET Name Chapter 4 Lesson 3 Pgs 110-111 A horse is a mammal. Most young mammals grow inside their mothers. Young mammals get milk from their mothers after they re born. A young horse is called a foal. Male (boy) foals are called colts and female foals are called fillies. Both of them get milk from their mother for about 6 months. Foals start to look more like their parents as they grow. A horse is considered an adult when it turns about 5 years old. It is then old enough to have foals of its own.

Chapter 4 Lesson 4 Pgs. 112-113 HOW YOUNG ANIMALS ARE LIKE THEIR PARENTS STUDY SHEET Many young animals look like their parents. They can have the same shape and colors as their parents. However, not all animals look like their parents. Aome can be different colors or have different patterns on their fur. The stripes of a young zebra confuse its predators. Fawns don t look exactly like their parents. They have spots on their fur that help camouflage them from parents. Some bably seals (pups) are pure white like the snow they live in. The white coloring helps hide them when they re young and weak.

Chapter 4 Lesson 5 Pgs. 114-115 THE LIFE CYCLE OF A BEAN PLANT STUDY SHEET #1 Seeds contain an embryo (tiny plant) and stored food. The seed sprouts and uses the stored food to grow up and out of the ground. Then it can begin to make its own food through photosynthesis. The stored food in the seed gives it energy to germinate and become a seedling with leaves. It will then be able to make its own food. Seed coat- A hard outer covering that protects the seed. Embryo- The small plant that can be found inside the seed. Germinate- To begin to grow into a young plant. As seeds germinate, roots grow down into the ground and a stem grows up towards the Sun. Seedling- A young plant.
Chapter 4 Lesson 6 Pgs. 116-117 HOW YOUNG PLANTS ARE LIKE THEIR PARENTS STUDY SHEET Young plants usually look like the parent plants. However, they can be different in some ways too. A young saguaro cactus has the same shape as its parent but it doesn t start to grow arms until it is about 65 years old. Young saguaro cactus with no arms Adult saguaro A foxglove plant grows leaves during its first year. However, it doesn t grow flowers until its second year. Foxflove is poisonous but it can be used to make heart medicine. It got its name because the flowers look like the fingers of a glove. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 4 Lesson 7 Pgs. 118-121 HOW PEOPLE GROW AND CHANGE STUDY SHEET #1 All people keep changing as they grow older. Children grow taller until they become adults. Adult skin will wrinkle as they get older. People are alike in many ways and different in in many ways. Humans can look different in ways such as height, color, hair color, and skin color.
