This sale offering includes many home-raised females, originating from herds with generations of stacked pedigrees and superior genetic lines. Also in the offering are purchased females that have been developed on fescue pasture. All heifers have been synchronized and bred to high accuracy calving ease A.I. sires followed by exposure to Natural Service calving ease bulls. Once again, consigners have brought an excellent line-up of heifers. This year 150 heifers are available. They are mostly Black or BWF, 2 Gray heifers, and 1 RWF heifer. Breeds include purebred Angus, Angus cross, SimAngus, Angus/Charolais, Hereford, and Angus/Hereford heifers. Registered females include: 14 Angus and 2 Black Herefords. There are 100 head of A.I. Bred heifers, some selling with known fetal sex, and 20 head of Tier II heifers. The heifers will be sold in uniform lots according to breed, color, size, calving date and fetal sex when available. Consignors are listed in alphabetical order not by sale order. Sale order will be available the day of the sale. The catalog includes footnotes from the consigners and also EPD accuracy on available sires. Remember, an accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability in data selection. SALE INFORMATION Auctioneer Ken Carney Sale Agent Fruitland Livestock Auction The sale order was determined by consignors drawing for a position in the rotation. Each consignor selected those heifers to sell in each rotation. Heifers will be sold in uniform lots sorted according to breed type, size and those selling together are expected to calve in a 45 day period. Heifers become the property of the purchaser immediately after the sale. Each animal will be at the purchaser s risk as soon as sold. The seller will aid in the loading of the cattle on instructions from the buyer, but at the buyer s risk. No cattle will be loaded until the conclusion of the sale. All fees will be collected by the Fruitland Livestock Auction, Inc. and are to be settled before loading. GUARANTEE All heifers are guaranteed bred and are guaranteed to remain pregnant for 30 days after the sale. Due dates are approximate. Females can range two weeks or more around due date even if they were AI bred. Heifers were pasture exposed to bulls after AI. Rectal palpation for pregnancy is subjective and not exact because all cows vary in fetal development. AI pregnancies are not guaranteed but highly probable. Gestation length is based on average of 283 days and can come very early or very late. Any heifer found open (by an accredited veterinarian) will be returned to the consignor and the money will be refunded by the consignor. Heifers are guaranteed against genetic defects on first calf only if inspected and documented by a veterinarian. All guarantees are made by the consignor of the cattle, not the sale committee or the SEMO Cattlemen s Association. TAGS All heifers in the sale are identified by a special tag that carries the Show-Me-Select trademark and name. This tag indicates that the heifers have met all of the requirements of the Missouri Show-Me- Select program. Some heifers may carry a white Show-Me-Select tag. This identifies them as Tier Two heifers which is explained in more detail later in this catalog. CONTRIBUTORS The sale committee and consignors thank all those who have contributed to the success of this program. Your faith in our ability to make this program work is appreciated. REQUIREMENTS FOR HEIFERS IN THE DECEMBER 2015 REPLACEMENT HEIFER SALE These requirements are designed to minimize the incidence and severity of calving difficulty and protect against potential reproductive losses. Heifers must be bred to service sires at or less than established birth weight EPD maximums, have a minimum pelvic area of 150 cm 2 prebreeding or 180 cm 2 at pregnancy examination, be a minimum body condition score of 5 on sale day, and meet established health guidelines. Bred Heifers were managed under the following calendar: Weaning: All heifers must be calfhood vaccinated for Brucellosis. Heifers are vaccinated for IBR, PI-3, BVD, BRSV, and 7-way Clostridial. Label directions concerning initial vaccination and boosters must be followed. Use of implants is discouraged. If heifers are implanted, only FDA approved products for replacement heifers are allowed according to label guidelines. Long-term use of MGA is prohibited. Use of MGA for periods up to 14 days to synchronize estrus is permitted. Internal and external parasites are controlled as needed. Heifers must be polled or de-horned and completely healed by sale day. Pre-Breeding: Pre-breeding reproductive examination is performed. Reproductive tract scored, pelvic measured, weighed Heifers are vaccinated for IBR, BVD, Leptospirosis, and Vibriosis between 30 and 60 days prior to beginning of breeding. All vaccinations must follow label directions. Internal and external parasites are controlled as needed. Pregnancy Exam: Heifers are pregnancy examined to determine breeding dates. (Confirm AI pregnancy or natural service.) Heifers are treated for external and internal parasites within 30 days of sale date. Products for internal parasite control must have a label claim for all stages of the parasite life cycle. Heifers are examined on sale day by a final screening committee to eliminate blemishes (scarred eyes, frozen ears, short tails, rat tails). Heifers must be a minimum body condition score of 5 (1-9 scale) on sale day. Heifers have a final pregnancy check within 30 days of sale. Sire requirements: Eligible sires must have known ID, be registered by their respective national breed registry, and have complete EPD information. Sires must meet calving ease EPD requirements for breeds reporting calving ease EPD. For breeds not reporting calving ease EPD, sires must meet birth weight EPD requirements. All sires used in conjunction with artificial insemination must have a minimum accuracy value of 0.6 on a scale of zero to one for the respective EPD's. USING THE CATALOG The sires used for Artificial Insemination and Natural Service breeding have been listed for each producer. The table will list the bull name and breed, the type of service in which the bull was used (AI or NS) and his EPD and Accuracy information. Expected progeny differences (EPDs) provide estimates of the genetic value of an animal as a parent. Specifically, differences in EPDs between two individuals of the same breed predict differences in performance between their future offspring when each is mated to animals of the same average genetic merit. EPDs are calculated for birth, growth, maternal, and carcass traits and are reported in the same units of measurement as the trait (normally pounds). EPD values may be directly compared only between animals of the same breed. In other words, a birth weight EPD for a Charolais bull may not be directly compared to a birth weight EPD of a Hereford bull (unless an adjustment is made to account for breed differences). Accuracy is reported as a decimal between zero and one and an accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability in data selection. The greater the accuracy, the more certainty that EPD will not change significantly as additional progeny information is observed. Calving Ease Direct (CED): expressed as a percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight (BW): the expected differences in average birth weight (lbs) of progeny. Birth weight reflects prenatal growth potential and may also be used as an indicator of calving ease. Weaning Weight (WW): expected difference in average weaning weight (lbs) of progeny. Yearling Weight (YW): the expected difference in average yearling weight (lbs) of progeny. Maternal Milk (Milk): the expected difference in average weaning weight (lbs) of daughter s calves, which is attributed to milking ability. In other words, it is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters. 2015 Breed EPD Averages for Current Sires Within Breed Breed CED BW WW YW Milk Angus +6 +1.4 +50 +88 +23 Red Angus +5-1.5 +57 +89 +20 Simmental +8.7 +1.9 +63.2 +92 +22.1 SimAngus +10.4 +0.7 +60 +91 +21.7 TIER II HEIFERS Tier II qualification identifies heifers that are out of high accuracy sires for the traits listed below. **** NEW THIS YEAR **** SHOW-ME-PLUS Classification As part of the Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Program, we have created a new designation for heifers with genomic predictions called Show-Me-Plus. In the past, the Show-Me-Select program created a designation for heifers that were out of high-accuracy AI sires called Tier II heifers. Buyers had more information about these heifers and consistently paid a premium for them. To capitalize on the increased information provided by genomic predictions, the Show-Me-Select program created the Show-Me-Plus designation. These are either registered heifers with genomic-enhanced EPDs or commercial heifers with a prediction from an approved genomic test. The GeneMax Advantage, Herd Navigator, Igenity Angus Gold/Silver, and Maternal Edge Heifer Profiles are currently approved for use in the program. Using genomically enhanced EPD for selection of young breeding stock provides a level of precision and reliability that s never been available to seedstock producers before. By genotyping replacement heifer candidates, breeders can improve the heifers EPD accuracies about as much as the progeny data resulting from a female s whole lifetime of production. The best part is you can know a replacement heifer s estimate of genetic merit as if she s been in production for years, all before she s even weaned from her dam. Using GE- EPDs with improved accuracy improves the reliability of the decisions breeders make and, ultimately, the rate of progress their selection program can achieve. -Dr. Bob Weaber, Kansas State University Reading and understanding a GeneMax Advantage test: This test reports three indexes, a Cow Advantage index focused on cow-calf production, a Feeder Advantage index focused on performance in the feedlot and on the grid, and a Total Advantage index which ranks animals on performance from conception to carcass. These indexes are reported as a percentile rank from 1 to 100 where 50 is average, 1 is the bottom of the heap, and 99 is top of the class. The GeneMax Advantage test also reports SMART Outliers. This flags animals that have extreme values for cow size, milk, docility, marbling, and tenderness. This test explains approximately 65% of the variation in dozens of traits and then combines these predictions into indexes based on economic importance. Those who have talked with a beef genetics extension specialists know indexes are the preferred way for commercial cattlemen to make selection decisions. This test is approved for use on high-percentage (>75%) Angus cattle. Fruitland Livestock Auction, Fruitland, MO Page 7

Bred 29 Heifers All Black 22 AI bred to Reserve Due 3/1/2016 7 NS bred Due 3/16 to 4/10/2016 A.I. Bred Heifers These 20 heifers were confirmed by our veterinarian to be A.I. bred. They were AI ed on May 23rd 2015. The A.I. Sync Method FTAI 14 Day CIDR-PG, including the bull selection (VAR Reserve 1111), were administered by Roger Eakins. These heifers have been hand fed since they were weaned and are gentle. They have been raised on fescue and clover pastures and supplemented with a corn and soybean based commodity ration including a mineral especially formulated for fescue forage. All heifers were themselves sired by calving-ease bulls. They are docile, easy to handle and can be moved from far fields into the working pen by following a bucket of feed. They are conditioned to respect single strand hot wire in a rotational grazing environment. The heifers have always been treated gently and worked with a minimum of stress. Natural Service Sired These 7 heifers have the same characteristics as the A.I. group except they were determined to be natural bred by our registered Angus bulls. 3 Heifers by SydGen Forward 3893 Registration No. 17697376 4 Heifers by KVAK Prophet Jakov 989Z Registration No. 17865226 All the heifers available here are breeding stock that we at Indian Creek Cattle Co. are proud to offer for sale.
