December 02, 2009 Tideline Aquatics Store Hours Monday Friday 11am-7pm Saturday 10am-6pm Sunday 1pm-5pm DO YOU HAVE THIS PROBLEM WITH YOUR AQUARIUM & DON T KNOW IT? time these fittings had corroded and were affecting his aquarium inhabitants. Any underwater fittings should always be made of PVC, ABS or another water safe connection. Clamps should be only plastic hose clamps as they will never rust and fall apart in the water. Many do it yourself hobbyists don t realize that this could ever result into a problem for the aquarium. Take time now to look around your aquarium components and check for any sign of metal fittings. Just bring the fitting into the store and will have the appropriate type of fitting to replace it with that is aquarium safe. A customer came in recently and was discussing how many problems he was having with his aquarium. Invertebrates would only last a short period in his aquarium and he was also having problem algae growing in the aquarium though the regular water parameters that can cause algae issues (nitrate, nitrite, phosphate) were testing out completely normal. After probing deeper into how his aquarium was plumbed, we found that he had a brass fitting on the main pump with the hose clamped with a metal hose clamp!! Over Also examine your pump motor. Do you have an aquarium-safe motor? Some water pumps are designed for use only in freshwater. They may contain components that are not designed for use with the corrosive affects of saltwater. Others may be designed for pumping water out of basements yet still have parts that may corrode when used constantly running in the aquarium or garden pond. Remember that anything you use in your aquarium should be listed as aquarium safe otherwise it may come back to cause you and your aquarium inhabitants mysterious problems that you may have not even considered!
