February 24, 2010 Tideline Aquatics Store Hours Monday Friday 11am-7pm Saturday 10am-6pm Sunday 1pm-5pm CONGRATS TO NEW CUSTOMER JOE GORIN & HIS FAMILY FOR WINNING THE TIDELINE AQUATICS AQUARIUM GIVE-A-WAY!! PREPARING YOUR POND FOR SPRING!! major headaches when the warmer weather moves in. You and your fish will appreciate the rewards of preparing the pond for spring. 1. Debris Removal Dig out your pond net and dip out ALL leaf debris, fallen tree branches and dead plant material from your pond water. Once the weather warms, if these organic materials are left in the water you are guaranteed a major algae bloom! The annoying and unusually extreme winter weather is just about to head out for the season and if you are like us THANK GOODNESS! This has been a rough winter for your pond and pond fish as well. Deluges of rain, windstorms, snow (who da thunk lol) and bitter cold temperatures have taken their whips on our ponds. Take these measures now to prevent some 2. Filtration System Cleaning Within the water lines of your filtration system and settled inside your UV Clarifier is pond muck. Disconnect water lines and flush high-pressure water through them. Flush the muck outside of the pond! Remove the lines from your UV (unplug it first!) and flush water through your UV housing. Shine a flashlight into your UV to see if the protective glass quartz sleeve is clean. If not, you will need to disassemble the unit and clean the glass sleeve. Test your UV lamps to ensure it is still working (never look directly into a burning UV lamp as it will damage your eyes). If your lamp has been burning for 12 months, you should replace it with a new lamp. Replace your pond filters mechanical filter pads with new

ones. Flush out the main pond filter to remove muck trapped inside. The biomedia of your pond filter should also be cleaned. When cleaning biomedia, you should use either well water, pond water or dechlorinated tap water to flush out trapped pond muck. It does not need to be spotless but you should try and remove the majority of organic material. It is also time to replace the activated carbon in your filter. Fresh carbon will remove organics, discolorations and odors from the pond water. 3. Partial Water Change Before even starting this, ensure you have enough water conditioner to treat the new water you will be putting back into the pond. Using your pond water pump, remove a third to half of the pond water. Water your garden plants, grass and flower beds where needed using this pond water. While the water level is low, cut away any dead plant material in your dormant water garden plants. This is also a good time to remove any remaining leaves you may be have missed. If you are using well water that is safe for your fish (no sulfur smell and the water has been tested to be safe for your fish) you can refill the pond slowly. If you are using tap water, you can place the hose in the pond and add dechlorinator (water conditioner that removes chlorine, chloramines and ammonia) at 15 minutes intervals to prevent killing your fish with untreated tap water. DO NOT PLACE THE HOSE IN THE POND AND WALK AWAY! If you forget, you will have no fish left alive!! After refilling, get your filtration system running again. 4. Bacterial Pond Additives Now that you have cleaned your pond, you should begin adding bacterial pond additives to the water. These products contain bacteria that break down any remaining pond muck and they assist in restarting your ponds biological filter. We suggest adding these products about once per week throughout the spring and summer season. Bacterial pond additives help to maintain low organic levels thus reducing algae and they also break down ammonia and nitrite produced by the fish. AQUALIFE WATER GARDEN CLEANER! 5. Test The Water Your work is complete except for one more step. You should test the pond water for ph, ammonia, nitrite and carbonate hardness (KH). Don t forget this simple step after all of your work getting you pond in shape for spring. There should be no ammonia or nitrite. The ph should be between 7.0-8.0 and the carbonate hardness should be at least 3 degrees KH to prevent the ph from suddenly dropping to dangerously low levels. If your water tests out of acceptable levels, come see us for guidance on correcting the water issues while your fish are still somewhat dormant. Most pond water is now warm enough to start feeding your fish a wheat germ pond food. During these colder times, a once per day feeding will suffice. Your fish will be ready for a clean pond and some good food after this winter!!

PUT YOUR POND ON TOUR THIS YEAR!! received a lovely mix of Acanthastrea lordhowensis corals that were hand picked by Justin during his recent visit to wholesalers in The Charleston Showa Koi Club is looking for new ponds to add to the 2010 Pond Tour. Whether it be a pond with plants and goldfish or a koi pond, they would love to hear from you! This is a wonderful event each year with local folks and out of towners that enjoy viewing other peoples ponds. If you would like to have your pond placed on their tour, please contact them: Email: president@charlestonshowkoiclub.org Or you can call: Robert Lewis (843) 830-7677 and he will direct you to the appropriate members of the pond tour committee. Los Angeles. These are small but not tiny colonies in mixed colors that are fully expanded and feeding. We also have a few medium sized pieces that are also incredible.
