judges profiles Dogs: Mr Brian Pocock (Fromebank) We purchased our first Basset in 1970 from Maureen & Steve Ashtons Avenwood kennel and have owned, bred & showed a number of Hounds over the following 20 years, including Ch Belvere Maggie May at Fromebank, who came to us as a puppy from Maggie Gray after we had lost a litter of our own breeding. We have bred and shown dogs in breeds including Griffon Bruxellois & Whippets. I first judged the breed in 1977 at Pontarddulais Open Show and have judged them at Open Show level since, first awarded CCs in 1990 at City of Birmingham and have awarded them on 5 occasions since. I have judged all Hounds at Open Shows since 1980 and many breeds in other Groups since the 80s including a number of Best in Shows I am looking forward to judging the dogs for the premier breed club and wish them every success in the future. Bitches: Mrs Liz Cartledge (Ryslip) Swedish born Liz was crazy about dogs from early childhood, her parents had Boxers and then a Dobermann. Her father trained a number of working breeds to their obedience titles. Liz saved up and got her own first dog, a Pembroke Corgi puppy at the age of 13 and has remained faithful to Corgis to this day. Got the showing bug early on and also qualified as a ring steward in her mid teens. Having completed two years at secretarial college, Liz decided that before settling down to an office job she wanted to go to England and work as a kennel maid - in a Corgi kennel! Via some breed notes in Our Dogs, a lady by the name of Audrey Minto responded, offering her a job in her Dreymin Basset, Beagle and Corgi kennel in Kent. So off she went spending an idyllic late spring and long summer with half a dozen Bassets, five Beagles and four Corgis. The star of the kennel was Ch Dreymin Appeline Coral, a. beautiful lemon/white bitch. Her daughters Virtue and Venture, and her tri-coloured dog was called Dreymin Dusky Knight who later on went to Mr Benelli's kennel in Italy, plus a couple of youngsters. Liz knew nothing at all about Basset Hounds but it was obvious that Loppy (Coral) was outstanding. All the Dreymin hounds were exercised off the leads every day, running across large open fields and Liz was amazed how fast and powerful the Bassets were. Loppy was campaigned at the same time as Ch Fredwell Varon Vandal, and Liz was able to go to many of the shows and see the top Bassets in the early 60s, meeting all the breed people - Joan Wells-Meacham, Mildred Seiffert, Jean Rowett-Johns, Wendy Benge-Abbott, Veronica Ross, George Johnston, Rosemary Goodyear - and many more. Those were the days... All things come to an end and Liz returned to Sweden taking with her a young Dreymin Corgi puppy. Worked in an office for a few years but the urge to return to England was always there. The opportunity came when Dog World moved from Bradford to Ashford, Kent - Liz applied for a job and was taken on as a sub editor in January 1967. Five years later Liz married Joe Cartledge and moved to his Ryslip Kennel in Binfield, Berkshire, which is still her place of work today. So now 50 years later Liz is heavily involved with judging, committee work, running the kennels etc. Secretary of the Junior Handling Association, encouraging young people to get interested in showing/handling and ultimately breeding dogs; serves on Crufts, LKA and Windsor show committees. Passed by the Kennel Club to award CCs in 108 breeds, all Groups and BIS at Championship Show level - and has judged 6 Groups and also BIS at Crufts. Liz is looking forward to her day with the Bassets on August 6th. Special Award Classes: Mrs Mary Pascoe (Sarakhan) My first dog was an Afghan Hound. I fell in love with the breed in the mid 70s. I started judging them in 1978 and awarded my 1st set of Challenge Certificates in the breed in 1991. I have always enjoyed judging within the Hound Group and I award Challenge Certificates in three other Hound breeds and love to judge the others, including Basset Hounds at Open Show level. In 2014 I had the honour of judging my breed at Crufts, an experience I shall never forget. I have judged Afghans in Australia, South Africa, USA, Germany and Belgium. With my husband I have dabbled in breeding and have made up Champions, home bred and others. Many from our litters have gained other awards, Junior Warrants, Stud Book numbers, Group winning and places, at Championship Shows as well as Open Shows. I would feel honoured to judge Bassets at your forthcoming show.

Exhibitors should note that such practices could constitute harsh handling and reports of such practice will be referred to the Committee under Kennel Club Show Regulation F11. 16. All exhibitors must be familiar with Kennel Club Regulation F (Annex B) - Regulations for the Preparation of Dogs for Exhibition. 17. All dogs resident outside of the UK must be issued with a Kennel Club Authority to Compete number before entry to the show/ event can be made. All overseas entries without an Authority to Compete number will be returned to the exhibitor/competitor. 18. Dogs in Vehicles on Hot Days. Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance to help guide you through the do s and don ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events. When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams. If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at all. The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of water available to drink. Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog. When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle. Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty of water available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated. Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended lengths of time. Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead to dire results. Please look after your dog s welfare. WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the General Committee for disciplinary action under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. Exhibitors/ Competitors are reminded that show societies have the right under Kennel Club Regulation to refuse any entry. 19. Not for Competition entries will be accepted. Details of each dog so entered must be recorded on the entry form and must be Kennel Club registered. 20. No modifications will be made to the schedule except by permission of the General Committee of the Kennel Club, which will be followed by advertisement in the Canine press wherever possible. 21. Any owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog is requested to remove as soon as possible any fouling caused by their dog(s) at any Kennel Club licensed event within the licensed venue and within the environs of that event including car and caravan parks and approaches. Adequate receptacles for the disposal of such fouling will be provided. 22. Should the Judge be prevented from fulfilling his/her engagement the committee reserve to themselves the right of appointing another judge to fulfill his/her duties. Exhibitors are at liberty to withdraw from competition but no entrance fee can be returned. 23. No person shall carry out punitive correction or harsh handling of a dog at any time whilst at the licensed venue including its environs, car park and caravan parks and approaches. 24. The owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog at Kennel Club licensed events must at all times ensure that the dog is kept under proper control whilst at the licensed venue, including its environs, car and caravan parks and approaches. This Regulation applies before (at any time during the set up period at the venue), during the event and afterwards (at any time during the breakdown of the event). 25. Every exhibitor shall ensure that whilst the dog is being exhibited, its handler shall display the correct ring number.
