WESTERN AUSTRALIA STATE BREED EXHIBITION 21 st and 22md April 2012 Mrs Joylene Neddermeyer National Breed Commission Chairman I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Committee of the German Shepherd Dog Association of Western Australian for their invitation to judge the State Breed Exhibition in 2012. I must say it was a great weekend discussing, reviewing and generally enjoying our breed The German Shepherd Dog A number of my comments were made on the day however I would like to summarise my findings and to offer some guidance for your future breeding program I realise that this was a move away from the norm by inviting a non resident Western Australian Judge to the Open Dog and Open Bitch Class. From all reports it appears that this concept was successful and hopefully created renewed interest in the SBE which was the intent of inviting the NBC Chairman to adjudicate over the weekend. I would like to thank my stewards Ian Marr and John Crace, my stenographers, Honey Gross Richardson and Vicki Knight for their assistance over the weekend. They ensured that the ring was efficiently run and recorded my comments on the dogs with a minimum of fuss. I would like also like to thank my fellow GSDCA Breed Surveyors and GSDCA Specialist Judges, John Fenner, Bruce Knight, Carol O Rourke, Honey Gross Richardson, and Natalie Humphries for their contribution and input. I have decided not to make this summary a statistical analysis but to highlight the positives and the areas that require improvement in your animals for the future and to highlight some animals that particularly impressed me. OVERALL VIEW I must say that I was very impressed with the overall quality of animals but as is the National trend, the bitches are stronger in their depth of quality overall. SIEGER *SABARANBURG ESKO A (1:1) Z Normal *Cayos vd Noriswand a ED (Gmy) Hneg *Ch. Bruvic Kontiki A Z

A son of Cayos Noriswand, and his mother being Bruvic Kontiki, means that this dog has a very good and well constructed pedigree with a number of well known and very well constructed animals contained within his ancestry. Standing in the type of is father, a significant producer in this country, means there should be a very good degree of predictability when using this male at stud. This dog shows in movement what he promises in stance, and overall is a male of absolute top quality. He shows in his off lead gaiting exercise, again a very free flowing, easy, powerful movement. Sabaranburg Esko was also awarded the Sieger title in 2011 and now needs to be given the opportunity to produce progeny that stand in his type and his quality. I will watch with interest the progeny from this sire and hopefully as a son of Cayos Noriswand can carry that bloodline into the future. Congratulations to the owner and breeders of this lovely dog for presenting him in excellent condition and at all times he performed to the optium. SIEGERIN *MALISA vom FINKENSCHLAG a SchH1 Odin v Holtkamper Hof a ED (Gmy) *Caty v Tamaraspitze a A bitch that impresses with her overall strength, type and harmonious construction and in addition presented very good progeny over the weekend. A bitch that typifies her breeding and should be a worthy asset to the breeding pool her in Australia. Again she was presented in excellent condition and during all phases of the class gave a faultless performance. Two progeny were exhibited in the Junior Class from Kardin Kruger and both animals are far above average quality. When selecting a breeding partner select a sire of similar type capable of improving the lay of the croup. Some care is to be exercised in regards to the depth of hindquarter angulation. Congratulations to the owners and breeders of this lovely bitch and I wish her all the best in her future breeding program.

SIRES PROGENY CLASS There is no doubt that the most influential sire at the SBE was Fasties Elle Willy Wonka with a number of highly placed animals and also presenting a very impressive progeny group. It was an ideal opportunity to view a group of 14 progeny which were of a very high quality. Overall are sire typical, stand within the desired standard of size, very good definition of the sexes, of very good to slightly elongated proportions and are sire typical and of very good type. Normal to high withers, firm backs, well moulded croup which could be a little longer. The upper arm while of good length could be still better angled, very good to slightly deep hindquarter angulation. In some cases the view from front is not quite correct, balanced chest proportions, however some care to be exercised in the length of lower chest. Very good heads and expression with dark eyes slightly wide set ears and very good masking. Ideally the lower jaw should be slightly more developed. Step correct in front, slightly narrow at rear with good firmness of elbows, slightly loose to loose hock joints. In movement show a joy in running with very good ground covering gait with very good back transmission. As of 30 th June 2012 his statistics via the GSDCA HD/ED Control Scheme are as follows:- GSDCA Hip Dysplasia Control Scheme Progeny 26 Dams 17 Best 0 Worst 37 Mean Score 7.35 0-5 62% 6-10 23% 11-20 12% 21-30 0% 31-40 0% 4-50 0% 51+ 0% GSDCA Elbow Dysplasia Control Scheme Progeny 26 Dams 17 Normal 65% Grade One 27% Grade Two 8% Grade Three 0% UAP 0% It was a great opportunity to see and assess the progeny from this sire in his home state and not just a restricted number able to travel to the National Show and Trial. Fasties Elle Willy Wonka has been previously awarded the Excellent Merit grading and I am very pleased to be able to say that his progeny group certainly warranted him achieving the grading of Excellent Merit. Overall a very high quality group. Congratulations to the owners and breeders of Fasties Elle Willy Wonka.

YOUNG MALES FOR THE FUTURE *SEIGEN SUIRS ALFIE A Z Sire: *Seigen Vantage Point A Z Dam : *Kazkiri Suri A Z This young male was my winner in the Intermediate Dog Class and a dog that I believe has an excellent future ahead of him. Standing within the desired standard of size, a strong masculine male of the very good type, well coloured and well pigmented and of very good type. He impressed with his overall strength and harmonious construction and while some care is required in regards to elbows via Pino Drei Birken Zwinger, he displays many attributes that may consolidate improvement in overall type and construction. A very promising young male that should be given due consideration in future breeding programs. *HOMER VON AMASIS HD (FCI)ED (FCI) Sire; *Chivas von Bad Boll a Dam:* Bania del Seprio 'a' This young male was my winner in the Junior Dog Class and while only recently released from quarantine was very impressive with his overall type, pigmentation and presence. Particularly impressive was the fact that he was free from exaggeration, balanced in his angulations and very good overall firmness in both the elbows and hock joints. At just under 18 months of age he still requires further maturity, and his overall structure is praiseworthy. He has an excellent formed skull and foreface formation, with the correct amount of stop and in my opinion impresses with his true German Shepherd expression. During movement he displays very good ground covering gait with balanced hindquarter drive and forehand reach from a very firm back. A very promising young male that should be given due consideration in any future breeding programs.

YOUNG FEMALES FOR THE FUTURE. *HAUSOSIN LIVIN IN SIN A Z Sire: *Zony vom Haus Gerstenberg a ED (Gmy) Hneg Dam; *Hausosin Aintnosin A Z This young female was my Intermediate Bitch winner, standing within the desired standard of size, strong substantial bitch of very good brood type and of overall harmonious construction. There is no doubt that she stands in the type of her mother line and a minor criticism I would like her to presented in a slightly firmer and dryer condition. A very well bred bitch with her mother a previous Siegerin at the WA SBE and a daughter of Zony Haus Gerstenberg a sire that produced a very impressive progeny group at the 2012 National Show and Trial. When selecting a breeding partner due consideration should be given to selecting a sire to improve overall firmness and that displays a good joy in running. A very lovely bitch and I wish her all the future. VOLSCARO CIAO BELLA Sire: Ch Fasties Elle Willy Wonka A (Nwy) ED (Nwy) Hneg Dam: *Volscaro Missy Brown A Z This young female was my Puppy Bitch winner and was a joy to watch in the ring. Standing within the desired standard of size, medium strong, well pigmented and well coloured firm and dry bitch of very impressive type. Of overall very harmonious construction she was very impressive with her far reaching powerful dynamic movement transmitted through a firm back with powerful drive and free forehand reach. A young bitch that obviously enjoys the experience in the ring and obviously displays a great joy in running. An absolute joy to judge. When selecting a suitable breeding partner care should be exercised in regards to elbow status of the sire and should have a very strong family history of excellent elbows. A very beautiful bitch and I wish her all the very best for the future. ICCARA TILA TEQUILA S:*Vladimir Envy Of Them All A Z D:*Iccara Hoity Toity A Z A bitch that impresses with her overall type, strength and harmonious construction. Steps slightly cow hocked at rear correct in front where ideally the elbows and the hock joints should be a little firmer. During movement shows strong powerful expansive gait with very good back transmission. Ideally the bitch could be presented in a slightly less heavy condition and must not become any deeper in chest development as she matures. A bitch of excellent type, strength and substance just at times could display slightly more joy in running. Congratulations to the owners and breeders on this bitch for winning the Puppy Bitch win at the 2012 National Show and Trial.

GENERAL COMMENT: Areas to be watched Slightly deep angulation with slightly loose to loose hock joints Low set ears and in some cases the ears should be slightly firmer during movement Slightly underdeveloped lower jaws and slightly under developed dentition Slightly deep chest proportions, slightly short lower chest. Ensure continued improvement into the soundness of elbows Slightly excitable in character Slightly long tails These issues are not only relative to Western Australia but are an issues Australia wide and what from I have seen are a problem in Germany as well. In closing I believe that the animals currently being utilised in the breeding program here is Western Australia are of a very high standard and form a very sound basis for your future breeding program. While I believe that the elbow statistics for animals in Western Australia have improved slightly breeders still need to be diligent to consolidate further improvement. Due consideration should be given to the elbow status of any perspective breeding partner. The issue of deep hindquarter angulation with slightly loose joints is a worldwide problem with a number of top producing bloodlines contributing to this problem. I believe that this is a very important area to be considered by the breeders not only in Western Australia but Australia wide and it is an area that GSDCA Breed Surveyors have been instructed to note at breed survey and appropriate warnings are to be given in selection of a breeding partner by the breed surveyor. Particular Virtues. Except for one animal, all exhibits stood within the desired standard of size Very good overall strength and substance Very good proportions Very well coloured and well pigmented Dark eyes and very good masking Good to very good forequarter angulation Good of firmness of elbows I have attached some photographs of animals well known and relatively new for breeders to consider as a future breeding partner. It is important to note that when selecting a breeding partner consideration should be given to the overall picture not to just one area alone. Thank you once again for your invitation and the opportunity to adjudicate your animals and I wish everyone all the very best for the future in the future breeding program. If any breeder wishes to discuss my comments personally please do not hesitate to contact me on 08 82798994 or 0402 800163. Congratulations everyone and wish you all the very best for your future breeding program. Perspective sires to consider:-
