Dear 1 st and 2 nd Grade Families, Stone Soup 1 st & 2 nd Grade Spring Musical Thursday, April 9 th at 2:00pm This year our first and second grade musical will be Stone Soup, the story of a group of weary travelers and some gloomy citizens of Old Town, who come together and discover that, the greatest gift is to share. They have been working very hard in music class on their songs. In addition to learning their songs, some students have also been assigned a short speaking solo. Attached is a copy of the words for our musical. Feel free to keep this copy at home so you can practice! Students will be assigned to be a narrator, townsperson, or traveler. Students should remember which character they have been assigned. Below are suggested costumes for each character: Narrator: Wear something dressy. Girls can dress in a skirt or dress, and boys in nice pants and a tie (optional). No particular colors are required. Townsperson: Wear comfortable everyday clothing, such as jeans or overalls, girls in bright- colored dresses with aprons, etc. Traveler: Wear something rather ragged or worn- out with, perhaps, old sneakers and/or boots, etc. To hear all of the songs, and practice at home, please visit the NFS music webpage at http://nfsmusic.weebly.com and click under Music Classes. Our performance will be on Thursday, April 9 th starting at 2:00pm in the NFS gym. All are welcome and we hope to see you there! If you have any questions regarding our show, including costumes, please contact me at ksmith@portsmouth.k12.nh.us. Sincerely, Ms. Smith

Grumpy Every Day (Townspeople) We re so happy being grumpy every day. We dislike hearing children when they play. When we re done with our labors, we ignore our neighbors, We keep to ourselves and stay away. Yes, we re happy being grumpy every day. We re so happy being grumpy every day. We don t mind if the sky is dark and grey. We are not big complainers; we just think it s saner To keep it bottled up and locked away. Yes, we re happy being grumpy every day. In Old Town we re very simple; we re quiet and mundane. In Old Town we re predictable. We like to stay the same. We re so happy being grumpy every day. We dislike hearing children when they play. When we re done with our labors, we ignore our neighbors, We keep to ourselves and stay away. Yes, we re happy being grumpy, We re happy being grumpy, We re happy being grumpy every day!

Wouldn t It Be Nice? (Travelers) Solo 1: Wouldn t it be nice if we could entice someone to give us some bread? Solo 2: Wouldn t it be good if somebody could lend us a soft downy bed? All Travelers: Weary, so weary are we. Tired of traveling and being far from home. How we long for the day; no more to wander, no more to roam. Solo 3: Wouldn t it be nice if we could entice someone to feed us some stew? Solo 4: Wouldn t it be good if somebody could put a new sole on my shoe? All Travelers: Weary, so weary are we. Tired of traveling and being far from home. How we long for the day; no more to wander, no more to roam. Wouldn t it be nice if we could entice someone to give us some bread? Wouldn t it be good if somebody could lend us a soft downy bed? Wouldn t it be nice if we could entice someone to give us some food?

Soup From A Stone (Everyone) Whoever heard of soup from a stone? If this town had only known, We could each have made our own stone soup!... Soup from a stone! Verse 1 Traveler: Hmm, this soup needs pepper and salt. If it doesn t taste good, it s not my fault. Townsperson: Hey, I ve got some we can add! Verse 2 Traveler: Hmm, let s add a carrot or two, and a tasty onion to the brew. Townsperson: Hey! I ve got some we can add! Verse 3 Traveler: Hmm, how bout some juicy beef? That would make it good beyond belief. Townsperson: Hey! I ve got some we can add! Verse 4 Traveler: Hmm, any potatoes? Mushrooms? Or cabbage? Wouldn t want our soup to just be average. Townspeople: Hey! We ve got some we can add!

To Share (Everyone) Solo 1: The greatest gift is to share, To tell a neighbor you ll be there. Solo 2: To show a friend you really care. The greatest gift is to share. Everyone: For alone, we have nothing. We could lose our way. So, reach out to others, sisters and brothers. You ll find a better way. That s what this world is about, To meet a neighbor, help him out. To trust a friend when you re in doubt. That s what this world is about. The greatest gift is to share, To tell a neighbor you ll be there. To show a friend you really care. The greatest gift is to share. The greatest gift of all is to share!

Look At Old Town Now! (Everyone) Once our town was a sad little town. People were lonely and mad But, now we ve seen just what sharing can do, And that soup from a stone isn t bad So take a look at Old Town now! We are sharing our delicious chow. And, from now on we will take a vow to get along somehow. So come on, come on, we can dance all night. Come on, come on, everything s all right. Come and take a look at Old Town now. So take a look at Old Town now! We have found new joy in life, and how! But, now before we can take a bow, Just look at Old Town now! So come on, come on, we can dance all night. Come on, come on, everything s all right. Come and take a look at Old Town now. Just take a look at Old Town now! Hey, look at us now!
