EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE MARKET REPORT September 2016 Friday 2 nd Store Stock Market EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE Matford Park Road, Exeter, Devon, EX2 8FD 01392 251261 livestock@kivells.com www.kivells.com

467 STORE CATTLE & STIRKS 10AM Auctioneers: Simon Alford 07789 980203 Alan Webber 07967 718048 Steers to 1170 Heifers to 975 A larger entry of store cattle which incorporated our first autumn show and sale of continental steers and heifers saw any quality bred and well presented suckler kinds sell as well as ever, but as seen at the summers end in previous years lesser sorts looked cheaper, in particular those second tier dairy cross types. Best bullocks rose to 1170 for a single Limousin (22m) from John & Jenny Squire of South Tawton, a bunch of Blue steers (21m) off the same farm saw 1145 apiece whilst other Blue steers (22m) from Mark Palfrey of Yeoford topped 1140. Younger steers (17m) from Rob & Una Mingo of Whitestone looked dear at 1135 for a bunch of five Blondes whilst their group of eight Charolais steers (16m) saw 1000 each and five heifers with the same comments fetched 930 a head. Limousin steers (17m) to 1060 for David & Wendy Holland of Dolton as Angus steers (25m) saw 1120 for Gordon Elliott of Ashburton. South Devon Steers (22m) to 1070 for Brian Rowden of Blackawton. Three quarter finished Blue heifers (25m) topped 975 for Russell & Alison Retter of Cotleigh with Blonde females (22m) rising to 970 for RL Down & Son down from Barnstaple. Smart Simmental heifers (20m) realised 930 for Tony Foss of Torpoint with a bunch of three whilst a slightly older female of the same breed also made 930 for Michael Wonnacott of Throwleigh. A pair of well grown Blue heifers (18m) from David & Wendy Holland rose to 910 also well covered Blonde heifers (15m) from Clifford & Martyn Squire of Coryton ran to 860. FIRST AUTUMN SHOW AND SALE OF CONTINENTAL CATTLE RESULTS Best Pen of Steers Best Pen of Heifers 1st R & M Mingo, Whitestone 5 Blonde steers 17 months 2nd D Reddaway, Widecombe 3 Charolais steers 16 months 1st KH Squire & Son, Coryton 5 Blonde heifers 15 months 2nd MH Eggins, Plymouth 3 Charolais heifers 14 months 65 SUCKLED CALVES & STIRKS 11.30AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford 07789 980203 As with the store cattle buyers are becoming a little more selective, with any stronger beef bred types attracting the usual high demand but those Holstein and Holstein cross sorts more difficult to place. Best suckler bred calves rose to 825 for Jim Eggins of Yelverton with a striking young Charolais steer, his other Charolais steers got to 730 whilst females of the same breed ran to 665 again from Jim. A tremendous run of youngstock up from Praze & Beeble from the Gluyas family also saw 825 for a pair of Limousin steers (10m) with slightly younger sorts seeing 700 as a trio of Limousin heifers (9m) hit 605 a head. Another consignment of well bred and reared calves from James Williams from Meavey saw South Devon steer stirks to 750 whilst a pair of smart Charolais steers made 730 apiece, a price also achieved for his exceptionally well-muscled heifer of similar breeding. A couple of spritely Simmental steers (8m) from Gordon Elliott of Ashburton saw 580 each also Anthony Barrow of Bickington sold young, well turned out South Devon steers to 605 and heifers for 525. Neat dairy bred Blue steers (10m) to 540 for Graham Sercombe of North Tawton. 107 CALVES - 10.15AM Auctioneers: Mark Davis 07773 371774 & Ian Caunter 07813 068935 Identical numbers as last week forward, saw the best achieve good prices whereas the rest looking perhaps a little easier. Blue bulls topped at 392 for Messrs Higgin of East Allington, whilst Keith & Jane Hulbert of Honiton achieved 370 with theirs. Limousin bulls sold well topping at 372 for Kathrine Starr of Dunkeswell, N Churchill of Sidmouth realised 370 and 360, whilst AP & RE Retter reached 305. Further Blue bulls from RE & EAM Vooght of Newton Abbot hit CALVES - 10.15 am 350, a nice show of Simmental bulls from Martin & CALVES Bulls Heifers Liz Bennett of Broadhembury topped at 330, with Breed TOP AVE TOP AVE others achieving 320 & 295. Herefords attained British Blue 9 392 224 10 288 180 290 from JW & LF Baker of Exeter, whilst smart Angus bulls from Keith & Jane Hulbert reached 270. Limousin 9 372 280 14 292 180 Charolais topped the heifer section reaching 330 Charolais 2 330 243 from Malcolm Harris of Slapton, Simmental heifers Simmental from MJ Hooper of Spreyton attained 295, Limousin 5 330 294 2 295 230 heifers again from Kathrine Starr reached 292, whilst Hereford 1 290 290 3 230 160 Blue heifers from TJ & BE Cowley of Ashwater hit Aberdeen Angus 5 270 217 10 220 135 288 & 265. Herefords from Derek Burrough of Yarcombe realised 235, whilst Angus heifers from Devon Keith & Jane Hulbert topped at 220. Another large Holstein / Friesian 37 50 30 entry of young Black and Whites met a steady trade with the majority trading around the 30s. Shorthorn

70 DAIRY CATTLE 11.30AM Auctioneers: Mark Bromell & Mark Davis 07773 371774 Jerseys top at 1200gns! The dispersal of the commercial Jersey herd on behalf of Cansford Farm of Camelford sold to a decent trade for the best and the second quality or anything which had fault was a more difficult trade. Top of the day was 1200gns for a non-pedigree second calving freshly calved cow with a fresh fourth calver close behind at 1100gns. A third calved Kit bred cow by Q Impuls sold at 1000gns with the best of the Richtop bred cows reaching 950gns. A pen of pure Texel FM ewes from Roger Geake of Lamerton raced away to top the sale when they sold at 190 apiece, Roger also sold pure Suffolks at 105 and Suffolk x s at 90. A very respectable line-up of shearlings for the time of year were a straight trade with the best of all breeds 125 plus. Top money Shearlings at 160 went to Ross & Emma Sizmur of Okehampton with their quality NC Mules which saw further pens at 132 & 129. More quality mules at 132 (x3) for John Bond of Blackawton and 120 for the first two pens from both Roger Alford of Sourton and the Huxter family of Bridport.
