2nd Chance 4 Life Rescue Wet nose news JUNE-JULY 2012 VOLUME 7 Special Dates Check our Site for EVENTS anytime! Stinky Video I know we have kept everyone updated on our precious Stinky and his journey since leaving the high kill shelter in Philadelphia. For those that don t know Stinky s story We were called to see if we could take a very old shih tzu with issues Wendy immediately stepped up and said bring him on! Shea Kinsey met Val (who found Stinky at the shelter half way between here and Philly and dropped off a very smelly, very pathetic little guy at my home. Stinky not only had very little hair and was covered with yellow yeast he smelled horrible and he had a very bad case of kennel cough but you know even though I am sure he felt awful he was a sweet little guy and you couldn t help but cuddle him even though he didn t smell very good. Stinky spent the week with me and went to Elizabethtown Animal Hospital and was started on a regimen of meds to try to help his skin and control the yeast. He endured medicated baths every 3 days and after the third day decided he was not happy to be kept from the other dogs and began to be very vocal about it! Stinky went for many walks since he could not hang out with the gang in the back yard and after a week he was finally well enough with the kennel cough to meet the crew at the Leach house. He walked into the midst of them like he had always been here and did great until he was ready to go to Wendy s. Wendy took him in her arms and I believe she and Stinky both knew they would be special friends forever! Wendy nursed Stinky and he did wonderful. He came to events and really enjoyed being social. He LOVED car rides and Wendy did her best to make sure he got to go places. He loved attention and at events would socialize with all. A week after his visit to the specialist he stopped eating and Wendy immediately realized something was wrong. She took him to the specialist that he had been seeing and he immediately did an echo and xrays. Stinky s liver & heart were enlarged and he was filled with fluid. He told Wendy she would need to leave Stinky so they could work on him. They drained the fluid and they thought for a few hours that he was coming around but then he went into cardiac arrest and even though they tried for 20 minutes they were not able to revive him. Sometimes our hearts ache because we feel so helpless to help these little ones that were so ill treated for so long and didn t deserve the cards they were dealt and although we wish above all else that we could have given Stinky longer with us we are so thankful that he had Wendy s loving arms for the time he had left! We are very thankful to all of you who support our mission because without your financial support Stinky would never have had the chance to experience true love and family. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts and paws!! WET NOSE NEWS Page 10 Meet Sharon Longenecker. Sharon has been a 2nd Chance family member from the very beginning! Sharon is our foster who will take on bonded pairs. We all know that most people are not looking for 2 dogs at one time so Sharon knows when she pulls a bonded pair that they will stay with her longer than a single and she still opens her heart to them. Sharon has been successful in placing multiple bonded pairs including the latest, Checkers and Riley who now have their forever family and a big fenced in yard to run and play and its awesome to know that they will never be separated thanks to Sharon!!! Sharon and her husband Glenn live on a farm and are constantly working and even with all the farm work Sharon finds time to love on the foster dogs and take them on long walks. Sharon is also a wonderful baker and can always be depended on to bring yummy baked goods to events! We are so grateful for Sharon and her dedication to rescue. Thank you Sharon from your 2nd Chance Family and all the rescue dogs you have saved!! Just a quick update on Cookie who was returned to Second Chance in the spring. Cookie was one third of a trio of puppy siblings from West Virginia and we contacted the family that adopted her sister Lulu (aka Angel) and they jumped at the chance to have the girls be reunited. We know the last puppy from that group will always have a back up home if anything ever happens! Diamond, their rescued Jack Russell, and Lulu have been playing since they got Lulu at Christmas but occasionally it is clear that Diamond needs a break. Cookie has given her that break and allowed Diamond to return to her first love.snuggling in bed. Ringo, their rescued Greyhound, has also returned to retirement on his memory foam bed to contemplate the mysteries of the ceiling fan free of a little Lulu chewing on his tail. While the dad of the family is still occasionally grousing about having 4 dogs, he has been noted to be quite smitten with Cookie who has been quiet and well behaved during the readjustment period except for peeing on the welcome mat and pooping in front of the gate. They remain patient and consider those to be warnings to potential robbers that their house is booby trapped and they should enter at their own risk because they will not only leave soggy or smelly footprints back to their lair but may also potentially injure themselves tripping over sleeping dogs!

WET NOSE NEWS Page 11 Meet Heather Leach! I am so proud to call her my daughter! Heather has supported the rescue 100% from day 1. She takes care of all the dogs files. She is the one who meets with the dog warden twice a year to make sure we are in compliance with all the state rules. Heather is also the face behind our mascot Chance and oh yes she is our Easter Bunny also :-) Heather is at every large fundraiser ready to help wherever she is needed. Heather would foster but her fiancé needs to be convinced! She has been known however to bring home stray cats Thank you Heather for your dedication to the 2nd Chance Family and for calming down your mom when she is stressing out about a sick dog or a financial issue. You are my rock! I look forward to many more years of growing a very successful rescue with you by my side. Now get back to work!
