AVERAGE DAILY CAPACITY: NUMBER OF ANIMALS CARED FOR EACH YEAR: ANIMAL ADMISSIONS: FUNDING: FIRE: RECOVERY EFFORTS: PROGRAMS & SERVICES: 400 animals More than 6,000 We transfer animals from the city shelter and take in strays. We also accept owner surrenders from owners who for a variety of reasons cannot care for them any longer by appointment only. JHS is funded by individual donations, bequests, service fees and grants. The organization does not receive any state or federal funding. In April of 2007, JHS suffered a devastating fire which took the lives of 19 dogs and 67 cats. Jacksonville firefighters rescued more than 80 pets from the blaze. The cause of the fire is unknown. Despite difficult economic times, the outpouring of generosity immediately following the fire enabled JHS to take initial steps towards recovery - first by setting up temporary operations in order to continue providing shelter and care for the community s orphaned animals and then by building a fullservice, high-quality veterinary clinic. JHS is now poised to take the final and most critical step to full recovery constructing the new animal care, adoption and education center. The new facility will serve as the cornerstone to sustain No-Kill Jacksonville. Not only will the new center replace critical components lost to the fire in 2007, but it will expand JHS s capacity for medical isolation and long-term housing, provide areas for educational opportunities and community outreach and create a family-friendly, highvolume adoption and animal-welfare campus.
