Consultations are also available for ophthalmology, oncology, and dermatology. EQUINE SURGERY Auburn University has three board-certified specialists in equine surgery. We offer outpatient services in lameness diagnosis and treatment, prepurchase examinations, and performance evaluation. We run a 24-hour emergency surgery service in which the primary cases performed are soft tissue wounds, orthopedic emergencies and colic surgeries; a senior surgeon is always on call. We specialize in laparoscopy, arthroscopy, upper respiratory surgery, abdominal surgery, wound management, and orthopedic surgery. EMERGENCY AND CRITICAL CARE Auburn University has one board-certified diplomate in critical care and one clinician in fellowship in critical care. We provide continuous advanced monitoring, nursing care and diagnostics. A veterinary faculty member is available for consultation with the client or referring veterinarian. THERIOGENOLOGY Auburn s Equine Reproduction Center (ERC) includes a state-of-the-art reproductive laboratory and housing facilities for mares and stallions. Two board-certified specialists in theriogenology are available for case management and consultation. Other routinely performed procedures include breeding, management of mares with fresh, cooled-transported, and frozen semen, as well as stallion semen collection and processing. Having received full academic scholarship to the University of Arizona, he shod horses throughout college and graduated as the outstanding senior of the year in Veterinary Science and Microbiology. That spring Vern accepted a one year internship at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in surgery and podiatry. He was then offered an Associate veterinary position and in 2013 Vern became a partner. Vern publishes numerous papers and speaks both nationally and internationally. He continues to improve the knowledge base of equine veterinary podiatry. Vern is one of fewer than 10 veterinarians with the unique skill set of their veterinary degree combined with the Certified Journeyman Dr. Vern Dryden Farrier accreditation from the American Farriers Association.
