President s Corner Happy New Year! 2009 certainly got here fast, don t know if it s because I m getting older but time does seem to fly by these days. I hope everyone had a happy holiday season. With the turning of the year it now means the 2010 GRCA National Specialty is getting within striking distance!! A lot has been accomplished but there is still a lot to do. Please try and help out if you have some time to dedicate I m sure the general chair and all the event chairs are more than willing to give you a job! New in 2009 is also a small dues increase up $10. After an accounting of what the operating costs are for the club minus events, we discovered that over the past year we spent way more than was taken in through membership activities, dues, etc. Our events have paid our way again and that s not a bad thing its just something to realize that we would be doing much less as a club were it not for our events and most specifically our all-breed agility trials afford us the capital to operate, donate, educate, and have fun. Please take a look at the yearly balance sheet to see where the money comes and goes and then realize that a pretty small core group of members who do agility that are doing more than their share at keeping the club in the black (this is a hint to volunteer to help out at one of this year s trials!!). We have many new board members coming in this year and I d like to thank all the outgoing officers and directors: Chris Johnson (VP), Linda Stanahan (Treasurer), Maureen Murphy (Secretary), Jim Gregory (Agility), and Deb Anderson (Field). Without people like this stepping up to do the job we wouldn t have a club. Please welcome the new officers and directors: Gloria Hale (VP), Marcy Werner (Treasurer), Carol Hanft (Secretary), Nancy Ego (Obedience), and Shar Henry (Agility). I remain the president for another year, Lauren Schwartz is still Conformation rep. and Steve Dodge moved from Obedience to Field rep. We re all looking forward to a fun-filled year and please don t hesitate to contact any of us if you have ideas, comment, or concerns. Please look at the calendar and write down meeting and event dates. We still need someone to organize the yearly awards banquet and also someone to host the Holiday Party (thanks Anne and Erik for being such gracious hosts this past year), contact a board member if you d like to volunteer for either of these activities. We have several ideas for meeting programs that I ve collected but if there is something that you d like to see or someone you know that might be a good presenter we are definitely trying to go back to doing something interesting and educational (and fun) at the meetings rather than just dull business! Best wishes for the New Year and most of all have fun with your dog(s). Warren Frizell, President Loved and sadly missed by Joanne and Randy Bartley

Membership Meeting Minutes Minutes of the General Membership Meeting 11/20/2008 The meeting was called to order at 7:10 pm by President, Warren Frizell. Linda Stranahan moved to approve the minutes from the last meeting. Kathy Frizell seconded motion passed. Reports were presented. (Treasurer s report elsewhere in this newsletter) Obedience MHGRC fun match at Jeffco Sat. Dec. 13th Set up at 7:00 a.m. Agility MHGRC fun match at Jeffco Sun. Dec. 14th We will also be having equipment /trailer cleanup these two days Conformation Strickland Sensations Seminar at Jeffco Feb. 28 and March 1. Contact Lauren Schwartz for details Holiday party is 12/6 at Anne Shannon s from 11-3 2010 National Barbara Branstad provided an update. We have a superintendent arranged and just need to finalize the contract. It will be BaRay. We are fundraising by stewarding at the Longs Peak Obedience/Rally trials in January. Anyone available should contact her. The cookbook is underway and requests for recipes and photos will be forthcoming from that committee. OLD BUSINESS Discussion regarding the redo of the MHGRC website. Steven Schwartz volunteered to work on a committee to put together a few proposals for the Jan. meeting Discussion regarding the increase of membership dues. Bruce McLean moved that dues for 2009 be $30. For a family and $25. For an individual. Lauren Schwartz seconded motion passed Lauren Schwartz requested that puppy referral guidelines be the same as those that GRCA uses. She will go through our guidelines and change them to match GRCA and have them inserted into the next newsletter so that they can be voted on at the next membership meeting. The question was asked if the agility committee had decided what to do about holding future agility trials. Warren said that Jim Gregory had told him they decided to continue to have two three day trials, but we will not offer FAST. NEW BUSINESS This meeting is the election of officers for the 2009 year. The slate of officers was presented they are running unopposed. Steven Schwartz moved to accept the slate. Angela Berkheimer seconded. Motion passed. The 2009 officers will be: Warren Frizell, President; Gloria Hale, Vice-President; Carol Hanft, Secretary; Marcy Werner, Treasurer; Lauren Schwartz, Conformation ; Shar Henry, Agility; Steve Dodge, Field and Nancy Ego, Obedience. Warren thanked the outgoing officers and representatives for their outstanding contributions to the club for the past year. Jeanne von Barby mentioned that she would like to extend a Lifetime Membership in MHGRC to Jean Kistle who has been a member for many, many years. Jeanne moved to award this membership. Chris Johnson seconded and motion passed. The Secretary will send Jean a card letting her know of this award. Meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m. Please check the website and Yahoo group for the current year end trophy qualifications and submission forms.

Conformation Report Once again, it appears to have been a good year for MHGRC members! I will be working on putting a meeting together in January to discuss the 2009 Specialty. Although we have our judges, there is a lot to do! Please email me if you are available to help in any way! There is no job too small--we can always use the help. At the last meeting, we had some new folks who were interested in conformation. This would be a perfect opportunity to volunteer and learn the ropes. Happy Holidays! Proposed Changes to Criteria for the Conformation Traveling Trophies Current criteria and proposed changes for Conformation Trophies V. Conformation Traveling Trophies Current Criteria - Point System for Top Conformation, Top Class Dog, and Top Class Bitch WD/WB/BOW number of points awarded for the show (1 to 5) based on current AKC schedule. BOS 2 pts (for a special, 2pts+number of points awarded for the breed that day) BOB 5 pts (for a special, 5pts+number of points awarded for the breed that day) Group 4 10 points Group 3 15 points Group 2 20 points Group 1 25 points BIS 100 points Points are cumulative for a particular show, i.e. if you went WD for 2 pts, and BOW (no additional points bitches were same pts as dogs) then went BOB and finally a Group 3, you would receive 2+5+15 or 22 pts for that show. Had a special won the breed and gone Group 3 that same day, the points would be the same. The Top Class Dog/Bitch trophies count only points earned up to and including the show that their championship was earned. Top Conformation will count all points during the award year. Proposed Criteria: Top Conformation: One point is awarded for each dog defeated during the calendar year. The trophy points will be based entirely on the number of dogs defeated. The submitter must provide a copy of the AKC record Dogs Defeated report for their dog to qualify for the trophy. Top Class Dog and Top Class Bitch: The Top Class Dog and Top Class Bitch trophies will be awarded only to dogs or bitches that finish their championship during the calendar year. The trophy is based on the number of total points earned toward their championship + number of golden retrievers defeated at shows where they earned points. Best of Winners, Best of Opposite, and Best of Breed wins are included through the dogs defeated criteria there are no extra added points. Group wins from the classes are applicable to the Top Conformation trophy only. All points and dogs defeated are included in the total numbers; the counts are based on all competition wins, not just the current year. If a win is older than 4 years at the time of submission, the owner may submit AKC or Superintendant documents showing the dogs (Golden Ret.) defeated or the dog will be credited with the minimum number of goldens required for the points that were awarded at the time.

New Conformation Traveling Trophy Criteria: The Mariah Goldens Bred-By Award will be offered to class dogs/bitches shown in the Bred-By class. Calculations will depend on number of dogs defeated in the Bred-By class. If a dog/bitch takes BOW, both dogs/bitches shown in Bred-By classes for that day can be counted. Examples: At XYZ show, entered are four (4) dogs in Bred-By dogs and six (6) bitches in Bred-By bitches. Both the Bred-By dog and bitch who win their classes, don t point. They have three (3) and five (5) points, respectively. However, if that same dog or bitch takes BOW, he/she has nine (9) points. Also to be calculated will be special AKC-Sanctioned Bred-By competitions, as follows (a designated point value is necessary as Group numbers are not calculated for special AKC-sanctioned events: Bred-By Best in Show -- 10 points (plus earlier points for Bred-By BOB and dogs defeated in the classes) Bred-By Group One -- 5 points (plus earlier points for Bred-By BOB and dogs defeated in the classes) Bred-By Group Two -- 4 points (plus earlier points for Bred-By BOB and dogs defeated in the classes) Bred-By Group Three -- 3 points (plus earlier points for Bred-By BOB and dogs defeated in the classes) Bred-By Group Four -- 2 points (plus earlier points for Bred-By BOB and dogs defeated in the classes) Bred-By Best of Breed -- 1 points + number of dogs defeated that day in Bred-By classes (class numbers only tallied once, regardless of BOW or not, when special AKC-sanctioned Bred-By competitions are offered). Example: At XYZ show, entered are four (4) dogs in Bred-By dogs and six (6) bitches in Bred-By bitches. A dog wins his class, doesn t take points, BUT takes Bred-By Best of Breed. He would have 10 points from that win (1 for Bred-By BOB, and 9 for dogs/bitches defeated). The bitch would still have 5 Bred-By points, or if she would happen to take BOW that day, she would also get to count nine (9) points (sometimes, one or the other Bred-by winner doesn t come back in the ring for Bred-by BOB. This provision covers that scenario). One award will be offered to include both sexes annually. It is the breeder s responsibility to keep track of Bred-By counts, and special AKC-sanctioned competitions. Proof of these competitions and awards must be submitted with award nomination (photos, tear sheets, Onofrio s results on-line). No provisions for retiring the trophy. Name of year-end award must remain Mariah Goldens Bred-By Award, and future proposed changes in criteria need to also be approved by Mariah Goldens. Agility Report With Winter in full swing, you may not be thinking about agility training unless you have a place indoors. You can only do so many contact simulations at the bottom of the stairs in your house before your dog gives you that weird look. There are some options, though, to keep you dog s skills from getting rusty. Check for fun matches, fun runs, and run-throughs offered by clubs and groups along the Front Range. These are listed on Yahoo! Groups Colorado Agility. There will be a jointly hosted Fun Match on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Boulder Co. Fairgrounds, 9-3. The flyer is available in the Files section of Colorado Agility Group. Get out of the snow and run your dog inside! The AKC Nationals will be held in March in N. Carolina. Results will be posted daily either on the AKC website, or by people who put them in messages on the Colorado Agility message board, so we can all see how well Golden Retrievers are doing. Treasurer s Report Year End 2008 This Treasurer s Report will give a brief summary of how the whole year went. As usual, if you have any questions or would like more details on any item, you can contact me (but make it quick because I won t be Treasurer after the first of the year). The Agility Seminar appears to have lost money but it is only because all the entry money for the agility match that same weekend was donated to the National fund (even though we still had to pay grounds rental). The same is true for the agility portion of the March Fun Match. The Specialty appears to have lost money, but actually would have made money except that all the proceeds from the Silent Auction were donated to the National fund. The Awards Banquet and Club Operations will always be in the red. However, the Goldens Only Fun Match and December Fun Match made money this year, which hasn t always happened. The Hunt Test lost money but primarily because we paid the cadets to throw all those ducks for us and it was well worth it. And the WC/WCX appeared to have made money this year, even though it was fairly small. As usual, the agility trials resulted in substantial income for the club. All in all, the club is in the black and we ve been able to hold several successful events and donate money to the National.
