R r rabbit A rabbit is an animal. It lives under the ground in a home called a burrow. Rabbits like to eat the vegetables in the garden. We sometimes call them bunny rabbits. race The hare and the tortoise ran a race. The hare was very quick. The tortoise was very slow. The hare was sure that he could race the tortoise. He ran half the race, then lay down to sleep. He thought he had plenty of time. But he slept too long. The tortoise went on in a slow and steady way. He did not stop. In the end he won the race. radio We listen to the radio. We hear the news, and music, and stories on the radio. The sound comes over the air without wires. That is why a radio is sometimes called a wireless set.

rag A rag is an old piece of cloth. Cinderella s clothes were old and torn. They were in rags. The Scarecrow is dressed in rags. rain Oh, where do you come from, you little drops of rain, Pitter patter, Pitter patter, down the window-pane? Rain is made of drops of water. It falls down from the sky on a rainy day. rainbow Sometimes you can see a rainbow when the sun shines through the rain. You can see it in the sky. It is shaped like part of a circle. You can see seven colors in a rainbow. raise The teacher tells Jill to raise her hand when she has done her sums. Jill puts up her hand. She raises her hand.

rat A rat is an animal. It looks loke a big mouse. reach Look at the giraffe with his long neck. He can reach right up to the top of the tree. He can stretch his neck and eat the leaves at the top. He is reaching for the leaves. Jack runs fast. He can reach home before Jill. He can get home before Jill. ready Breakfast is ready. Breakfast is on the table. It is time to eat breakfast. Jack is ready for breakfast. He is hungry. After breakfast he will be ready to go to school. real Jill is a real girl. Molly is not real. She is a doll. This is a toy duck. This is a real duck.

They have often ridden on the bus. right One side of you is the right side. The other side is the left. You can write with your right hand or your left. ring The elves danced in a ring. They danced in a circle. Jack will ring the bell. Mother wears a ring on her finger.

ripe A banana is yellow when it is ripe. When it is ripe, it is ready to eat. It is green when it is not ripe. rise What time do you rise in the morning? I get up at seven o clock. I rise at seven. road Dad is driving his car along the road. He is coming to a bridge across the road. The bridge goes over the river. rob The Knave of Hearts He stole the tarts. The Knave of Hearts wanted to rob the Queen. He stole the tarts from the Queen. He was a robber.

rock There some big stones at the seaside. They are called rocks. A rock is like a little hill made of stone. There are some big rocks in the sea. The wind can rock the trees. It makes them sway. roll The teddy bear has fallen downstairs. He is going to roll down. He will turn over and over. Jill will roll him up in a shawl. She will wrap the shawl round him. She will eat a roll for breakfst. roller Jack has a pair of roller skates. He can move at a great speed on his roller skates. They have little wheels on them. roof Kitty sometimes sits on the roof. She sits on the top of the house. The chimney is on the roof. There are slates on the roof. They help to keep the rain out.

room This is Jill s room. It is her bedroom. There is plenty of room in it. There is enough space in the room. rope Jill s swing is made of rope. Rope is a strong kind of string. We tie up big parcels with rope. We rope the parcels. rose A rose is a flower. Some roses grow in the garden. Some roses grow wild. There are many colors of roses. Roses have a sweet perfume. row The kittens are in a row. They are in a straight line. Dad can row a boat. He can make the boat travel through the water.

rubber The tires on the car are made of rubber. Jack likes to play with his rubber ball. Rubber comes from a rubber tree. rug There is a rug in front of the fire. Jill likes to sit on the rug. Kitty likes to sit on the rug, too. Dad has a rug in the car. It is a car rug. Mother puts it over her knees to keep them warm. ruler A ruler is a piece of wood or metal. It is marked off in inches. We measure the length of things with a ruler. We draw straight lines with a ruler. run The cow and the pig have run away. The cow runs first. The pig runs after the cow. The dog is running after the pig. The farmer is running after the dog. Who will run the fastest?
