The GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper for the Global Experiment Dorian Janney NASA/GSFC/ADNET dorian.w.janney@nasa.gov 1
The Mosquito Habitat Mapper To get the app, go to the App Store and search for globe observer. Open the app, and click on Login/Create an Account
A3er you have opened the app, you will see a screen like this: You will need to scroll down to see the New GLOBE Citizen Scientists section. Enter your email. Select your country. Use the referral code- 2468- as we want to keep track of all the observations related to the Global Experiment.
You will need to enter your email to receive the password. To get the password, you need to go to your email. It usually only takes a few minutes for the password to arrive. You will only need to enter the password the first time you use the app. For the Global Experiment, use the referral code 2468 so we can see how many observations are related to this effort!

IdenGfy potengal breeding sites Sample and Count larvae (these cannot hurt you nor transmit disease!) IdenGfy larvae Eliminate breeding sites 9
Step 1: Iden+fy Poten+al Mosquito Habitats- find water sources, natural or argficial, which may contain mosquito larvae. You will idengfy and photograph these habitats. 10
Any place where there is standing water is a place where mosquitoes might breed. These can be places in or outside your home! 11

14
Step 2: Sample and Count You can use a cup, bulb syringe, or other container to obtain a sample and count the number of larvae. 15l

Step 3: Iden+fy Larvae Type You will select a representagve larva for close-up photos to idengfy its genus. This will require specialized equipment such as a microscope or a macrolens awachment. 20

23
Step 4: Eliminate When you are done, we will ask you to dump the water, or cover the water source with a lid or net, if possible, to eliminate the breeding habitat. 24
Your efforts are invaluable! From the New York Times, April 20 th, 2017- The best defense against Aedes mosquitoes turns out to be not big municipal gestures but small individual acgons: destroying their habitat by emptying the pools of water where they reproduce 25
Why is NASA interested in mosquitoes? NASA studies many aspects of the Earth system, and we assist sciengsts around the world- CiGzen ScienGsts tooin using NASA data in their research. What types of data do you think NASA missions are able to collect that would be useful to people studying mosquitoes? 26
NASA data that is used includes: PrecipitaGon Soil moisture VegetaGon types Surface temperature 27

Join the Global Experiment! Access a suite of resources to assist science centers and science museums in training and responding to the Global Experiment. Learn which mosquito borne diseases have been found in an insgtugon s country and region using World Health OrganizaGon, U.S. Centers for Disease Control, and local health records. Find out when and where outbreaks of mosquito borne diseases have occurred in an insgtugon s region. 30
See how many potengal mosquito breeding sites science center and science museum visitors can idengfy and eliminate; keep a tally and images of breeding locagons (natural and human made) and how these were eliminated. Use global precipitagon measurement data to see how much precipitagon fell in the three months preceding mosquito borne disease outbreaks to see if there is a correlagon between precipitagon amount and the onset of mosquito borne illnesses in humans. Explore data to see is there is a correlagon between soil moisture and the onset of mosquito borne illnesses in humans. 31
Use surface temperature data to see what the surface temperature condigons were like in the three months preceding the disease outbreaks, and use this data to see if insgtugons visitors can determine a correlagon between the surface temperature and the onset of mosquito borne illnesses in humans. Connect with local sciengsts and health professionals, and engage them in training sessions and local programming. Remember to have pargcipants use the referral code 2468 so we can keep track of how many pargcipants around the world are using this app as a result of your efforts! 32
