reptile has a dry and scaly skin and it breathes through its lungs. There are about 6,000 different types of reptiles. The most common ones are alligators, crocodiles, lizards, snakes and turtles. are cold-blooded. Their body temperature stays the same as the outside temperature around them. In hot places most reptiles look for shady areas during the day. Many species are active at night. In cold regions reptiles hibernate during the winter months. can be small or large, heavy or lightweight. Pythons are snakes that can grow more than 9 metres long. Turtles can weigh more than 1000 kg. On the other hand, some lizards are not more than 5 cm long. R eptiles live all over the world, except in ntarctica. Most reptile species can be found in tropic and subtopic regions. Many types of lizards like the hot, dry desert areas. Some turtles and snakes spend most of their life in oceans. lthough many people are afraid of reptiles, most of them are harmless and don t attack human beings. Some, however, are dangerous, like crocodiles or snakes with poisonous bites. People hunt reptiles for their skin. It is used to make leather products like belts, shoes or handbags. reptile s body The skin of a reptile has scales. Some animals lose their old scales and grow new ones two or three times a year. Turtles have very hard scales called plates. They use them as a kind of protection from enemies in the outside world. The digestive system of a reptile depends on what kind of food it eats. M eat eaters have a very simple stomach and a short intestine. Plant eaters, like turtles, have a more complicated stomach and long intestines. Crocodiles have large stomach muscles because they have to chew the flesh they eat into small pieces. Some reptiles produce poison. They bite their attackers and inject poison into them. The victim may be paralyzed or even killed. Most reptiles have a good sense of Words belt = a band of leather that you wear around your waist to hold your clothes chew = to bite something many times before you swallow it common = very normal, usual digestive system =the organs that change food that you have eaten into material that the body can use flesh = the soft part of a person or an animal hibernate = to sleep the whole winter intestine = a long tube in your body through which the food goes after it leaves your stomach lightweight = not very heavy lizard = a reptile that has four legs and a long tail paralyze = if you cannot move any more plate = a thin, hard piece of skin poisonous =deadly, full of poison protection =defence, safety scales = small, flat pieces of skin that cover the bodies of reptiles shady = a place that is not in the sun species = a group of animals that look the same victim =a person or animal that has been attacked weigh =how heavy something is

vision. Not all of them can hear well. Some of them hear by feeling vibrations on the ground. breathe through their lungs. They normally have two lungs, but some snakes only have one. How reptiles live Male reptiles release their sperm inside a female. The sperm gets to the female s egg inside her body. This is called fertilization. These new eggs later become new reptiles. T urtles, crocodiles, as well as some lizards and snakes lay eggs that have hard shells. When they are laid in warm places they hatch more easily. Some reptiles keep their eggs in their babies until they hatch. Only a few species of reptiles care for their eggs or their babies. Some of them wrap their body around the eggs to protect them. Most reptiles eat other animals, however some lizards and turtles eat mainly plants. They usually grab their food and chew it or swallow it whole. Some crocodiles drown other animals before eating them. Snakes and some other reptiles bite their victims and poison them before they eat them. Pythons and many kinds of snakes wrap their bodies tightly around their prey, so that they can t breathe anymore and die. can live for a long time without food sometimes even for weeks. can defend themselves from other animals in many ways. Lizards can change the colour of their skin to avoid attacks. Some snakes lie on the ground and play dead until an attacker goes away. Crocodiles use their powerful tail as a whip, that Words avoid = to prevent something from happening breathe = to get air into your lungs burrow = to dig a hole in the ground care for = look after defend = to do something to protect yourself fertilization =here: to make a new animal grab = to take hold of quickly hatch = when a baby animal comes out of an egg prey = an animal that is hunted and eaten by another animal protect =defend, guard release = to let go shell = the hard part of an egg slide = glide sperm = a cell from a male animal that can join with a female egg to produce new life swallow = to make something go down your throat vision = the ability to see whip = a thin piece of rope or leather with which you can hit someone wrap =bind around

Most of them can pull their head, legs and tail into them and protect themselves from attacking enemies. Turtles cannot live in cold areas but they live almost everywhere else in deserts, grasslands, lakes and seas. Some turtles live only on land, but others spend most of their life in the water. When turtles swim they travel very quickly at speeds of up to 30 km an hour. Turtles grow to different sizes from 10 cm to 2.5 metres in length. The first turtles lived more than 180 million years ago. Today, many species are in danger of becoming extinct. People hunt them for food and gather their eggs. They also destroy their normal homes in order to make way for towns or farms. Female turtles lay eggs between spring and autumn some of them more than once during the breeding season. ll turtles lay their eggs on land. They dig their holes in the ground, lay their eggs and cover them with sand or dirt. Some turtles can lay many eggs at once. The female turtle walks away after laying her eggs and leaves it to the warming of the sun to hatch the young ones. When baby turtles hatch from the eggs they must dig their way to the surface, try to get food and protect themselves all on their own. Turtles are believed to belong to the longest living animals on earth some species can live up to 100 years. speed =how fast something moves surface =the top layer of the earth weigh =how heavy something is Sea Turtles Sea turtles live in the warm seas all over the world. They belong to the largest species. Some of them can get up to 2.5 metres long and weigh up to 700 kg. Sea turtles swim by beating their flippers, just like a bird flaps its wings.

Words Snakes backbone = the row of bones that go down the middle of a person s or an animal s back certain =special environment = the world around them fang = long sharp teeth joint = the part of your body where two bones meet match = they are the same as... outer = on the outside surface poison =a substance that can lead to death scales = small, flat pieces of skin that cover the bodies of reptiles slide =glide, to move smoothly over the ground swallow = to make something go down your throat tongue = the soft part inside your mouth that you can move around venom = poison victim =here: a person who is bitten vertebrae = the small, hollow bones that go down your back weigh =how heavy something is Snakes are animals with a long body and without legs. They move around by sliding. They have eyes that are always open and a narrow tongue that they often move in and out. Snakes can live almost anywhere in deserts, forests, oceans, rivers and lakes. However, they cannot live in very cold places like high mountains or polar regions. Most snakes live in the tropics. The anaconda of South merica and the python of sia are the largest snakes we know of. Both can grow up to 9 metres long. Some snakes are poisonous. They have fangs in their jaw. When they bite they inject poison through these fangs into the body of a victim. bout 15% of all snakes have venom that is harmful to people. In some cases, bites can even be deadly. snake s body is covered with dry, smooth scales. From time to time, they grow new scales and lose their outer ones. Most snakes have skin colours that match their environment. Some of them are brown, in order to hide in the leaves of a forest. Others may have very bright colours. snake can open its mouth very wide and swallow very large animals. Pythons can swallow animals that weigh up to 40 kg. snake s backbone consists of vertebrae. Strong joints connect the vertebrae and make their bodies very flexible. These reptiles cannot see or hear very well. They depend on their tongue to smell and taste. When a snake sticks out its tongue it picks up a certain smell and in such a way can follow other animals on the ground.

Words adjust = to change to a new situation aim = to point at blindness = not being able to see cave = a large hole in the side of a mountain or hill fast = to eat very little fertilize =to make new animal or plant life grow flex =to tighten your muscles or bend a part of your body hibernation = to be asleep the whole winter mate = the sexual partner of an animal observe = watch paralyze = if you cannot move any more poisonous =with poison in it protect =defend, guard species = a group of animals that look the same speed =how fast something moves spit =to make liquid come from your mouth squirt =to make liquid come out quickly Snakes How snakes live Snakes are difficult to observe because they hide a lot. Most snakes are active during the daytime, when they move around looking for food or a mate. Most snakes move by flexing their muscles, so that they produce waves from head to tail. Like most reptiles, female snakes lay eggs that are fertilized by male snakes. They leave their eggs after laying them, but some snakes - like pythons- or king cobras protect their eggs by lying on top of them. fter eight to ten weeks young snakes come out of the eggs. Sometimes baby snakes grow in the body of their mother and are born alive, just like we humans are. Snakes have body temperatures between 15 and 35 C. When it is too cold they cannot move at all and, on the other hand, most species die when their body temperature gets higher than 40 C. They adjust their temperature by moving from warmer to cooler places. When it gets too cold they lie in the sun. Cold winters are spent in caves and underground holes. During hibernation, body temperature drops to 5 C. Most snakes eat birds, fish, frogs, lizards and rats. They swallow other live animals. Some kinds of poisonous snakes bite their victims and paralyse them before they are eaten. Snakes can go on for a long time without food. They don t need food to keep them warm. When they are inactive, they use up little energy, so they don't need to eat a lot. n frican viper once fasted in a zoo for over 2 years. The frican ball python protects itself by rolling up its body into a ball with its head in the middle. swallow = to make something go down your throat tail = the part of an animal s body that is at the back use up = need victim =a person who has been bitten The fastest snake is the black mamba of frica. It can move at a speed of 11 km an hour over a short The spitting cobra of frica can squirt venom two and a half metres. The snake aims for the eyes of its enemy and the poison produces blindness.

Words environmentalist = someone who cares about protecting the world we live in extinct = to die out forbid = stop, not to allow fossil = an animal or plant that lived millions of years ago. The shape of its body can be seen in a rock Crocodiles Crocodiles belong to the largest living reptiles. They, and their look-alikes, the alligators, have a long body that looks like a cigar, short legs and long, powerful tails to swim. They have long snouts and sharp teeth to kill and eat their victims. Crocodiles, live in tropical countries all over the world. They prefer shallow water, rivers and swamps. Using their webbed feet, they can walk on soft, muddy ground. Their eyes and noses are higher than the rest of their head, so when they swim only these two organs are above the surface of the water. guard = to watch over and protect something or somebody hatch = when a baby animal comes out of an egg hide = skin law =the rules in a country look-alike = they look like other animals release = to let go, let free shallow = not very deep snout = a long nose that some animals and reptiles have species = a group of animals that look the same surface =the top layer of something swamp = land that is always wet or covered with water tail = the part of an animal s body that is at the back twist = to bend or turn webbed = to have skin between the toes Crocodiles eat many small animals, like fish, birds and turtles, which they catch with their mouth and twist into pieces. Sometimes they also attack people. Like most reptiles, crocodiles come to land to lay eggs in the sand. Female animals guard them until they hatch. Most crocodiles live in sia and frica, but there are a few groups that live in North and South merica. merican crocodiles live in Florida and on islands in the West Indies. grown-up merican crocodile can be about 4 metres long. The Nile crocodile lives almost everywhere in frica, except in the Sahara desert. Saltwater crocodiles can be found in India and islands of southeast sia. There are also crocodiles that live in ustralia. Crocodiles were once much larger. Fossils show that these reptiles once reached a length of about 15 metres. Today crocodiles are hunted all over the world. Industries need their hide to make shoes and handbags. So some species are even in danger of becoming extinct. Many countries have passed laws that forbid the hunting and killing of these reptiles. Some environmentalists have begun projects to collect crocodile eggs, hatch them and release the babies into the wild. victim =person or animal who is attacked
