55 PRIME CATTLE & BARREN COWS 10.45AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford 07789 980203 Prime cattle to 222ppk and 1583 Barren Cows to 163ppk and 1166 Prime Cattle A good entry of quality prime met a stronger trade topping at 222ppk for the best of a fine run from Bottor Rock Farms of Hennock with a 22 month Blonde heifer which realised 1253. An eye catching Limousin steer from Paul & Rosie Fishleigh of Sourton Cross sold well at 221ppk and weighing in at 718kg totalled a massive 1583. More good sorts from Fred Northmore of Clyst Honiton saw well finished South Devon steers to 198ppk & 1270 whilst a 740kg Charolais steer from Robert and Janet Legg of Dunchideock totalled 1350. Well covered over thirty month prime cattle hit 209ppk & 1326 & 203ppk & 1239 for South Devon steers and heifers respectively from David Heath of Kingsbridge. Barren Cows Strong demand for barreners this week with a well-muscled Limousin from Mark Palfrey of Yeoford selling to a high of 163ppk & 1166 others off the same farm rose to 131ppk & 978 for a Blue cow. South Devon cows sold to 145ppk for David Heath and from Michael & Tom Hartnell of Cornworthy, the latter realising 1115. Simmentals to 128ppk for Michael Turner of East Allington whilst a good bodied Blue cow from Messrs Green of Witheridge sold at 126ppk. Angus barreners from Ray Tratt of Honiton reached 121ppk & 966 as Peter Hendy of Staddiscombe, Plymouth saw his best, a Limousin, sell to 126ppk & 946. Plenty of decent dairy types sold over the 100ppk mark with the best to 113ppk & 949 for Messrs Trim of Combe Raleigh with a Holstein Friesian. That said, there was a noticeably stronger trade for decent 42 48kg sorts trading 40-43 over their weight. Heavies and over-weights were slightly dearer too, although big numbers are coming forward both locally and nationally and some are being penalised for being too fat. Top price over-weights at 94.50 came from Harvey Bros of Roborough, closely followed by Geoff Tripp of East Prawle at 93.20 and 92.20, Messrs Hockridge Bros of Crediton at 93 (53kgs), Trevor Selway of Sidmouth at 92.50, David Harris of Stoke Fleming at 92.20 and 92, and 92 also for Jaqueline Stone. 52kgs sold to 92.50 for Nigel Dennis of Ipplepen and 50kgs topped at 89.50 for Harvey Bros. 706 CULL EWES & 27 RAMS A larger entry that generally lacked quality sold to another blistering trade for the best and medium sorts, however a large proportion of lean and plain ewes and small hill ewes sold to an easier trade and held back the average. Paul Harris of Kingswear sold a massive single Charollais cross ewe at 149, the rest of the pen at 127.50 and a further pen at 124. Aimee Mogford of Nomansland sold two Suffolk ewes at 144 and two at 132.50, Suffolks again to 139.50 and 138 for James Heard of Okehampton and Suffolk crosses sold to 138.50 for Messrs Stoyle of East Village. Messrs Quick of Crediton sold Texel ewes at 138.50, rams at 138 and other ewes at 132, 131 and 130. Arthur Salter and Gavin Abraham of Dartmouth sold their best at 135, closely followed by Roy Endacott at 134.50 and Phil Stephens of Bickington at 133.50. More rams at 132.50 for Rob Webb of Crediton and 129 for Ian Woodley of Talaton. Pure Dorsets to 124 for Ross Sizmur of Thorndon Cross, Mules to 113.50 for K & R Elworthy of Burrington with the general run of Mules 75-95. Hill ewes lacking any great quality but better sorts 52-62, mediums 40+ and very plain and small hill ewes usually 20-35 with very few less than that. Everything in the average was 82.17. IN LAMB CULL EWES There are an increasing number of in-lamb cull ewes presented for sale. Please do not bring in-lamb ewes into the cull market, buyers will not bid at them as sheep that lamb in the lorry or abattoir, may lead to prosecution for the buyer and vendor.
