Companioning Grief Support Many of us have experienced losing a companion animal at some point in our lives. Our pets are more than just our furry creatures at home; they are our companions, our friends and some even consider them as family members. We experience grief with the loss of our own animals and we may also experience grief while working with the public and shelter pets. Although the ways our pets leave us may be different, we still grieve the hole in our lives when it happens. Marcella Fox, a grief specialist with Companioning Care, works with people who are experiencing grief from the loss of a companion animal. She s been providing compassionate care for over 20 years and helps people with both oncoming grief when a pet may pass away soon, and post-loss grief stages once a pet has passed. She also provides extra support for people facing compassion fatigue and urges virtuous selfcare. She encourages people facing grief to offer and receive support, learn from each other s experiences, research on bereavement and human-animal relationships and to be with people who understand your sadness. Marcella Fox offers individual, family and group support sessions. The group fees range from $3 to $15 sliding scale per meeting- you choose. My proudest accomplishment is going back to college as a young mom with 2 small children at home while working part time to obtain my nursing degree. It sure made me realize how much I took college for granted in my younger days.
Volunteer Info Night!
Paw Print Personals! Nina Sweet, beautiful cat looking for the right home where I can cuddle all day! Come meet me at Fist Ave. Meet Lynn- our Volunteer of the Month for October! Lynn first started volunteering at Greenhill in October of 2012 and has contributed almost 930 hours of service! Since her start in 2012, Lynn has helped with a multitude of volunteer duties. From dishes and litter pans shifts in the cattery, to cleaning cat traps and helping with transports and landscaping, she will always help us out in a pinch! According to Lynn, her favorite aspect of cattery volunteering is her finesse at kitchen tasks so busy staff is free to devote efforts [to the] cats and general public." She s even received the 2015 Pick of the Litter volunteer award at Greenhill! In addition to helping out in the cattery, Lynn has worked as a neighborhood cat liaison troubleshooter and atlarge TNR assistant since 2012. Thanks to her years of experience, she has accrued a vast wealth of knowledge on animal behavior and shelter challenges and management. Lynn's love for animals reaches beyond Greenhill, as she is also a member of the ASPCA and Mountain Lion Federation. Lynn describes herself as a "New Jersey girl who followed her wanderlust out West 40 years ago. Lynn relocated to Oregon from California in 2010 while working as a Census Bureau field rep. Come say hi at Greenhill! Angelica Adorable, friendly cat looking for a home to share with the right person! Come meet me at Greenhill today!! Meet our foster of the month, Sandi Ethridge! Sandi and her husband have been fosters since 2012! I have a full house of pets so it made sense to foster. Having loved volunteering in the cattery, I took orientation and became a foster parent! Sandi says. We asked Sandi what her most enjoyable foster experience was and she said, The most enjoyable and unique experience I ve had involves a couple of cats that I fostered that were owned by a woman that needed Greenhill to help with them while she found housing. The cats were visited by the woman that owned them during the foster stay, which I thought was wonderful! Another enjoyable aspect of fostering is the fostering varieties. Bottle babies, disabled cats (deaf, blind ect.), kittens, undersocilized ones and others! Sandi and her husband Jim are retired and in the proses of getting their house ready to sell so that they can downsize and buy a smaller home. They would also like to R.V a lot! Sandi says, One of the best things about fostering at Greenhill is the staff. The communication is wonderful. They are always available! I could not ask for a better fostering experience than at Greenhill!
Halloween Safety Tips for Animals! Halloween can be a festive holiday for people, but it can be downright scary for our furry friends. Here are a few tips from the Dumb Friends League to keep your pets safe and ensure this Oct. 31 doesn t turn into a nightmare for you and your critters: Keep the Halloween treats out of reach candy, especially chocolate, can make your pet sick and can even be fatal in severe cases. Put your pets in a separate room away from the door during peak trick-or-treating times. This will help reduce stress associated with constant visitors in strange costumes. It will also prevent them from darting outside when the door is open. Keep your pets indoors. Pets that are out at night with trick-ortreaters might get spooked by noises and costumes, which could cause them to run away. Always make sure your dog or cat has proper identification. If, for any reason, your pet escapes and becomes lost, a collar, ID tag and microchip can be lifesavers, increasing the chances that your pet will be returned to you. Wires and cords from decorations should be kept out of reach, as they can become dangerous if chewed. Your pet could cut or burn himself or receive a possibly life-threatening electrical shock. 2017 Denver Dumb Friends League There is nothing more fun to do as a family than sit and watch kittens play! -Leslie F., Foster Parent
She is doing great and has put on a little weight. Looks very healthy too. She let's both my sons (ages 6 & 10) carry her around and snuggle her. Arwen has made friends with our 75 lb. Alaskan Shepard and they play often. She also plays with my brothers smaller dog. Arwen is Queen Kitty and still sassy. She is so sweet and we all love her very much. Thanks for asking! Thank you for following up. Buttercup checked out great at his vet check. Adjustment here has gone well! We got him a bigger cage which he seems to really like. We have found a good routine for daily feeding, cleaning and floor/lap time. All is good! Lulu is doing really good, I absolutely love her. I took her to the vet with her voucher, and they checked her teeth and her teeth are good. She s got a sweet little personality, and I m very lucky I chose her. She likes her naps, likes to be on her blanket. I bought a dog bed and a crate but she doesn't want to use them. She sleeps on the couch when I m in the living room and sleeps in bed with me. She s my first small dog. I m recovering from open heart surgery, and it s nice to have her there.
