Girl Scout Patch Program Description The Girl Scout Patch Program consists of three levels: Daisy, Brownie, and Junior. At each level, girls do a variety of age-appropriate activities that teach them about being responsible animal advocates. All activities are done during troop meetings or at home. The last activity the troop will do is visit the SPCA for a tour. To schedule a tour, the troop leader should call 716-875-7360 ext. 234. Tours are offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm. Cost per girl is $8.00. Troop leaders are free and family members are $2.00 each. There is a minimum of six and maximum of twenty Daisies needed for a tour. Cash or checks (made payable to SPCA Serving Erie County) are accepted. Please call at least one month in advance to schedule tours. All programs include a special tour of our facility, including the dog kennels, the cat room, the small animals, and the Educational Farm. Tours last approximately 45 minutes to one hour. Special SPCA patches will be issued after all activities and the tour is completed. In order for the girls to earn the SPCA Patch, the following must occur: The girls must complete three out of the six activities before coming for the tour. Activity 1: Staying Safe around Dogs Activity 2: What do Pets Need? Activity 3: Sharing the Same Feelings Activity 4: Wish List Activity 5: Making Treats Activity 6: Humane Poster and Creative Writing Contest The troop leader should completely fill out the Patch Program Evaluation Form and turn it in by the end of the tour. Leaders: Please review the following with your troop before introducing the activities: What is the SPCA Serving Erie County? The mission of the SPCA is to create a caring and kind community that encourages fair and humane treatment of all creatures. Our knowledgeable, caring, and open-minded team of staff and volunteers achieves that mission through proactive efforts to address the current status of animals in our community, education of adults and children, rescue and sheltering of animals in need, and placement of animals into appropriate homes. The SPCA does not receive any funding from the county, city, state, or federal governments. We do not receive tax dollars of any kind. We are only able to assist the people and pets in need thanks to donations. The SPCA cares for approximately 12,000 animals each year through programs that include adoptions, admissions, animal rescues, animal emergency transports, stray lost and found services, animal cruelty investigations and seizures, care for wildlife, reptiles, exotics, and farm animals, and much more.

Activity 1 Staying Safe around Dogs! Please visit this website to read Dr. Sophia Yin s book, How to Greet a Dog and What to Avoid online or print it out. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0b1lg0vrpft5pr0fdoxlvnejkek8yzfnsetfvnklztfhpetu4/view After reading the book: Have your troop practice what they have learned using a stuffed dog. One person will pretend to be the owner while the other troop members demonstrate how to follow the steps to stay safe.

Activity 2 What Do Pets Need? Discuss what our pets need to be happy, healthy, and safe. What are the needs of our pets (food, water, shelter, love, exercise/playtime, vet visits)? How are pets needs the same as ours? How are they different? Ask the scouts to complete the activity, What Do Pets Need? by themselves or with a buddy. Directions: Find and color the things that every pet needs to be happy, healthy, and safe. Cross out the things that pets don t need with an X over it. Answer Key

What Do Pets Need? Directions: Find and color the things that every pet needs to be happy, healthy, and safe. Cross out the things that pets don t need with an X over it.

Activity 3 Sharing the Same Feelings People and animals share a lot of the same needs. Did you know we share a lot of the same feelings too? This activity will help the scouts to understand that animals and people have the same types of feelings and how we can help our pets to make sure they are always happy. Talk with the scouts about emotions. Ask them what kinds of emotions they had today. You can write them down as they brainstorm. Play a game of charades. You can print these cards out and call the scouts up one by one to act out the emotions of the card. Remember the person who is acting cannot talk. After each emotion, ask the scouts how they knew what was being acted out (body language- smile, open/closed/averted eyes, arms crossed, frown, clenched jaw, stomping feet, happy hands, etc.) Happy Sad Mad Excited Sleepy Bored After the game, ask them to think about their dog or someone else s dog. What do dogs do when they are tired? Explain how animals feel tired and need sleep just like us. Go through other emotions and review how the scouts might feel and how an animal might feel.

Activity 4 Collect Donation Items from Our Wish List Ask your parents, friends, and neighbors to donate one or more items from our list, something that helps us care for the animals and then bring the items you collected with you when you come for your tour. Activity 5 Making Treats Treats are a great way to show our animal friends that we love and care for them here at the shelter. Try one of these recipes or another favorite recipe to donate to our shelter dogs. *If making dog treats, please make them fresh. They will not keep too long because there are no preservatives.* *Make sure to write down the ingredients used, our animals can have allergies too!* Bacon Cookies Yield: Makes about 40 round treats Ingredients 3 slices uncured bacon 2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour 1/2 cup toasted wheat germ 1/2 cup flax seed 1/2 cup nonfat dry milk 1 large egg 1 cup low sodium chicken broth 1/3 cup chopped parsley Preparation 1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line 2 large shallow baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. Heat a medium nonstick skillet over medium and cook bacon until crisp, turning once or twice, about 6-7 minutes. Drain bacon, transfer to a cutting board, and finely chop it. Reserve 1 tablespoon bacon fat. 3. Combine the chopped bacon, flour, wheat germ and dry milk in a medium bowl. Whisk together reserved bacon fat, egg, broth and parsley in a separate bowl. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir with a spoon or rubber spatula until a rough dough forms. Knead the dough in the bowl 5-6 times until it comes together. 4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and roll out to a 1/4-inch thickness. With a 2-inch round cookie cutter, cut out treats and transfer to the prepared baking sheets. Press all the scraps together, kneading once or twice, then roll out to 1/4-inch thickness and cut out more treats; repeat if necessary. 5. Bake treats until lightly browned and fairly hard, rotating the pans from top to bottom once, about 35-40 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool completely; biscuits will harden as they cool. Store in an airtight container.

Peanut Butter and Banana Biscuits Yield: Makes about 86 (1 3/4-inch) treats Ingredients 1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour 3/4 cup old fashioned rolled oats 1/4 cup natural creamy peanut butter 1 ripe banana, mashed 1 large egg 2 tablespoons canola oil 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar Preparation 1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line a large shallow baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. Combine the flour and oats in a medium bowl. Whisk together the peanut butter, banana, egg, sugar and oil in a separate bowl. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir with a spoon or rubber spatula until a rough dough forms. Knead the dough in the bowl 5-6 times until it comes together. 3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and roll to a 1/4-inch thickness. With a 1 3/4-inch bone shaped cookie cutter, cut out treats and transfer to the prepared baking sheet. Press all the scraps together, kneading once or twice, then roll out to 1/4-inch thickness and cut out more treats; repeat if necessary. 4. Bake treats until lightly browned and fairly hard, rotating the pans from top to bottom once, about 20-25 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool completely; biscuits will harden as they cool. Store in an airtight container.

Activity 6 Humane Poster and Creative Writing Contest Contest Overview Since 1892, students throughout Erie County have spoken up for animals, people, and our community by participating in this contest. Lucy Lord, founder of the SPCA s Humane Education Department, oversaw this contest for many years. Today, ancestors of Lucy Lord still participate in, and support, this contest. A family tradition for generations and a historic piece of the SPCA, we are honored to conduct this contest annually. Community Partners All first-through eighth-grade students in Erie County are encouraged to participate. With a chance to win prizes, students will demonstrate how they are compassionate, empathetic citizens while promoting the humane treatment of others and creatively solving real-life issues. The Contest Students can enter either a humane poster or creative writing piece by division and grade. With three chances to win in each division, students challenge themselves by exploring real-life issues. Teachers can also honor each other through our Judy Silver Humane Educator of the Year Contest. The contest also includes: The Judy Silver Humane Educator of the Year Award The Anderson/Lowe Award for Artistic Ability The Stevens/Barrett Award for Creative Writing An awards ceremony will take place celebrating all of the humane accomplishments of the honored students and educator. To Learn More Contest brochures are mailed to all schools and after-schools programs. Also available online, anyone can download a brochure by visiting the Humane Education Department at YourSPCA.org or speak with Danielle at (716) 875-7360 ext. 245.

Themes: cooperation, teamwork, kindness, compassion, friendship The Stray Dog by Marc Simont A family falls in love with a stray dog during a family picnic. Will they be able to catch him and give him a new home? Themes: dogs kindness and compassion Before you were Mine by Maribeth Boelts A little boy imagines what life was like for his new dog before he adopted him from a shelter. Maybe he had a boy who loved him, but the family had to move and couldn't keep him. Maybe he belonged to someone who didn't appreciate how mischievous puppies can be. Maybe he was treated badly, and now he can be shown all the love he's been missing. This boy wonders about all of these things, but maybe they don't matter. Because now, his dog is home.
