New Year s Eve by: Brooke Tucker and Mikayla Coffey Did you know that the Chinese celebrate New years on a different day each year? Here are some other facts about the Chinese New Year. The Chinese New Year is called the Spring Festival and runs from the last day of the last month of the Chinese calendar to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first month, making the Lantern Festival the longest in the Chinese calendar. Each new year begins on a day between January 21st and February 20th. Do you know any Filipino New Year traditions? Well if you don t, here are a few. One Filipino New Year s custom is that they gather family and friends around a nicely decorated table and place a bowl of 12 citrus fruits on the table to represent the 12 months of the up coming new year. Another tradition is on New Year s Day people believe that they should wear polka dots because the polka dots mean lots of money! And I am pretty sure everybody wants money! Then when it comes to midnight the children should jump back and forth because they believe they will grow taller. After that they attend midnight mass and last but not least they celebrate with firecrackers to send away evil spirits! Time to let the ball drop! The ball that drops for the New Year is located in New York s Time Square. Placed on the roof of one Times Square, the ball is the most important part of the New Year s Eve celebration. The ball begins descending at 11:59pm and quickly falls 141 feet in 60 seconds down a specially designed flagpole and rests at midnight to signal the start of the New Year. In past years the festivities have begun with live entertainment performed by well known musicians. Many people around the world celebrate New Year in different ways. How do you celebrate your New year? NFL Undefeated by: Cody Turner and Brayden Zimmerman The 5 teams that started off with a 6 0/5 0 start are Panthers, Bengals, Broncos, Packers, and Patriots. DIY Christmas Gifts by: Camdyn, Izzy, and Nora Hello Lake Street enjoy these Christmas gifts that you can do with others. There is a couple of these cool, fun crafts that everyone in the family can enjoy. When you do these crafts you should have adult supervision at all times. Snow Globe Jar Use a fine tipped brush to paint small white dots on the outside of a glass jar. Fill the bottom of the jar with cotton balls or we suggest powdered sugar because it holds the items in place. Place small plastic decorations such as animals, Christmas trees, or Christmas decor, for a winter themed look. Next, tie a small card to a ribbon, preferably red, green, or white, and tie the ribbon around the jar. Now you have a great gift to give to family member or a friend! Doesn t it look nice! Snowman Jar For this craft you will need three small jars. Next fill each jar with different kinds of treats. The bottom jar should be filled with mints, the middle jar should be filled with hot chocolate mix, and the top jar should be filled with coconut or marshmallows. Then the decorations! On the middle jar glue black or brown buttons onto the center of the glass, and on the top jar use an extra jar lid and put a black cloth over top, and take a red ribbon and wrap it around the cloth so it stays on the lid. Don t forget to glue the jars together! When you glue the jars together, make sure to glue the jars ON TOP of the lid and NOT around the lid so that you can open each lid to get the treat inside. There you have it! Your homemade Christmas gift to give to a special person in your life. Would You Rather?
