Because of the Jersey island s proximity, the two breeds share some ancestry. And as a vestige of the Vikings presence in the area, the Normande may be related to Scandinavian genetics. The Normande milk is exceptionally well suited for cheese and Normandy is where such famous cheeses as Camembert and Pont-Lévêque are made. With close to 3, cows on test, the Normande is today one of the most important dairy breeds in France. Numerous studies have shown the breed excels in low input operations that involve less grain and more forage. It shows successful crosses with all U.S. dairy breeds and is often included in three-way crossbreeding in order to boost health traits. The new experimental organic herd at the University of Minnesota includes the Normande in its breeding program. The Normande is a unique combination of hardiness and adaptability to low input systems with high added value: thanks to very high components (4.3 fat, 3.65 protein) and a high incidence of BB Kappa Casein, the Normande is the cheese specialist. In addition, preliminary results indicate one of the highest incidences of A2A2 gene. Finally, the breed shows excellent marbling and finishing qualities, including on grass. 2.5 -.6.4 1.8 -.6-2.3-1.7 2. 1.8 3.6 1.3 1.4-2.5

While it belongs to the Simmental/Fleckvieh genetic group, its selection has been more focused on milk than the other branches. It shows large red and white spots similar to the Holstein with a white head. With more than 4, cows on test, the Montbeliarde is one of the main dairy breeds in France. It is currently enjoying great expansion in other European countries such as the Netherlands and Great Britain, either purebred or crossed. The Montbeliarde is known for very good fertility, great feet and legs as well as udder health qualities. The Jura region is famous for its cheese, the Comté, a hard cheese very similar to Gruyere. The Montbeliarde seems to be very well adapted to crossing with Holstein in intensive situations. A study of 6 dairies around Modesto, California, has shown higher lifetime profits for Montbeliarde crosses over pure Holsteins. The breed also crosses well with all U.S. dairy breeds and is often included in three-way crossbreeding programs. A new study on crossbreeding in intensive condition is currently taking place in various Minnesota dairies.

Why crossbreed with Normande & Montbeliarde? To benefit from hybrid vigor (heterosis) Heterosis is basically the health effect that can be expected when breeding two genetically distinct individuals, as opposed to inbreeding that brings related animals together and risks the appearance of dangerous double recessives. This health effect, or hybrid vigor, translates into a performance bonus. This bonus may not be easy to measure accurately but it should be 5% for production and at least 1% for calf vitality, longevity, fertility and other health traits. Heterosis comes on top of the average genetic level of the 2 parent breeds (see graph 1). Therefore, the impact of heterosis on profit should be significant for commercial dairy producers. Commercial pig, beef and sheep producers have been using crossbreeding for decades. Graph 1 In order to maximize the benefits of heterosis, it s important to continue crossbreeding beyond the second generation. This is why we recommend using a 3 way rotational crossbreeding program before returning to the breed used originally (see graph 2). To bring and improve specific traits Many dairy cows show excessive dairyness. Both the Normande and the Montbeliarde will bring the extra muscle, or strength, that s been missing. This trait will translate into these qualities: Improved fertility Better body condition Exceptional longevity Low grain adaptability Strong calves with good market value Excellent carcass quality and marbling In addition, both breeds show good components and identical total lbs of fat and protein. While the Normande has higher components, the Montbeliarde has more milk. Normande x Jersey Graph 2 Montbeliarde x Holstein Understanding French Proofs Production proofs are breeding values.
