Rhode Island Red Rhode Island Rhode Island Reds are a more popular breed due to their excellent egg laying ability. They can lay 200-300 extra large eggs a year. Their feathers are reddish rust with the rooster having darker tail feathers. These birds are bright and alert but at the same time quite, which makes a good choice for hobby farmers. The Rhode Island was never as popular as the Red. It is a separate breed from the Rhode Island Red. This breed is adaptable to confinement or free range. They are mellow, friendly, cold hardy and mature quickly. Egg Production 280 eggs a year. Barred Plymouth Rock 9.5 lbs Plymouth Rocks are a good dual purpose bird. They lay nearly 200+ large brown eggs a year and have an abundant amount of meat for a bird. The roosters and hens have a gray and white pattern but, the rooster is a little lighter in color. They are a cold hardy breed and will adapt to confinement or free range. Buff Orpington 10 lbs The Buff Orpington is a beautiful yellow gold bird. They are a friendly even affectionate breed. Laying between 175-200 eggs a year. These hens have a strong tendency to go broody, which makes them excellent mothers. Having Buff Orpingtons in your back yard will bring you new chicks each spring. Black Australorp Buff Leghorn 5 lbs The Black Australorp was originally imported from Australia. It is a great layer and has a meaty body which makes it a great dual-purpose bird. Some birds lay a record 364 eggs in 365 days. They are quiet, gentle and do well in confinement. The Buff Leghorn originated in Denmark. They were a cross between the popular Leghorn and cochin. They are excellent egg layers. If you are tired of the regular white and brown Leghorn this buff colored Leghorn is a beautiful breed that will still produce the same amount of eggs. Golden -Links Black -Links 9 lbs Silver Laced WyandoCe Golden Laced WyandoCe This hybrid breed is one of today's top egg layers in the commercial industry. They can effectively produce 250-280 large eggs a year. The hens are light in weight which makes their feed conversion to eggs excellent. The roosters are solid creamy white while the hens are streaked with tan and gold colors. Black -Link is also a similar hybrid to the golden sex link. They produce an abundant amount of eggs 250-280 large brown eggs a year. They are claimed to be a cold hardy bird due to their barred rock genetics. For that reason the rooster looks identical to the barred rock with the added color of reddish-dust in he neck. The hens are black with streaks of red-rust in their necks. The Silver Laced is the original Wyandotte. Later other breeds were developed from cross breeding. The body size and hardiness of this breed keeps them laying year round, straight through winter. Egg production 180-260 eggs a year. The Golden Laced Wyandotte makes for a good dual purpose breed. This breed also makes a wonderful addition to any backyard coop. When they arrived in the 1970's to the poultry world they were a big hit due to their colorful eggs. The rooster and hen come in a vast variety of colors. Also, popular for their long laying season which begins early January to early December, with no need for supplemental light. 3
