CORA IS WHY Cora was born with a congenital heart defect known as Atrioventricular Septal defect. Cora s heart defect was discovered when her mother was only 20 weeks pregnant thanks to a very conservative doctor who wanted to take a close look at Cora s heart due to slightly increased nuchal translucency on the back of Cora s neck. Hours after birth Cora was admitted to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit due to her heart quickly falling into heart failure. During her 1-month stay in the CICU, doctors developed a care plan to effectively manage her heart failure from home so she could gain strength in preparation for surgery. At just 5-months old, Cora underwent her very first open-heart surgery. Cora will be celebrating her 1-year anniversary as a survivor on the day of the Heart Mini! She will be walking for other children born, living, or who have lost the fight against heart conditions and disease. Her family will be walking as a representation to current and soon-to-be cardiac mothers, fathers, siblings, and family. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and these tiny hearts are worth fighting for. To all the families living with, or have lost a family member due to heart conditions or disease, we are here to support you. Trust in medicine, trust your care team, trust in the process, trust your intuition, and most importantly, never give up on a heart that makes up your home.
