board & train service BOARD AND TRAIN SERVICE Board and Train can be the way to go; it allows 24 hour a day consistency in approaching a behavior modification program and your dog is handled by a professional with extensive experience. Board and Train can jump-start the training effort - plant the seeds, so to speak - so you will have a place from which to begin afresh at home. Exclusive use of positive reinforcement methods will ensure your dog will look forward to training because, from his point of view, it s packaged as playing games! We all know that we learn a lot quicker and retain that knowledge if the learning process is fun and exciting. Pet Connection Dog Training accepts only one dog at a time for Board and Train services; this means lots of attention and play time for the visiting dog. THE TRAINER Diana Logan, CPDT (Certified Professional Dog Trainer; visit www.apdt.com), recognizes that it is the relationship between a dog and his human that is of the utmost importance. She embraces modern, science-based positive-reinforcement training which enhances this bond and makes it possible to cultivate a relationship that will endure and be mutually beneficial. She has been working with owners and their dogs since 2001 and has been teaching classes since early 2006. She is well-versed in dog behavior science, communication, training methodology and the power of positive training. She continues to attend local and national training conferences to broaden her knowledge and keep her abreast of the latest information and techniques. She not only enjoys working with dogs in a training capacity, but thrives on the connection and affection she shares with each of them. When caring for dogs, whether her own or someone else s, Diana s mission is to keep them feeling emotionally and physically safe and satisfied. Thoughtful canine education and exercise are crucial elements to meeting this goal. THE DIGS Your dog will be moving into the small and cozy hand-made Logan home and will become one of the family, which is comprised of Diana, her wonderful husband Drew, their ever-tolerant older female Standard Poodle Dory and energetic young Standard Poodle Astro. As appropriate, your dog will accompany Diana everywhere she goes. The Logan household is not a boarding kennel and your dog will not get relegated to a crate or pen for any extended length of time (aside from at night and for management purposes at other times). At night, your dog will sleep in the Logan bedroom (crated, if that s the norm). The Logan Residence is located in rural North Yarmouth, Maine. The house sits 300 from the road, which is a dead end. The house is surrounded by woods and has a large yard with plenty of room for romping. There is no fenced in area to contain dogs but dogs are not left outside unsupervised. The Logan s 7 acres of mostly wooded land offers ample space for adventures and outdoor training practice sessions - the stream down back is a frequent walk destination and gives the dogs a chance to frolic in some water, get really dirty and enjoy being dogs. TRAINING Training is an ongoing conversation with your dog. Diana recognizes that every conscious moment a dog has in life is a training moment. Whether we are in training mode or not, our dogs are learning something. Diana makes sure that this perpetual state of learning is in a positive direction. Besides the prioritized behaviors you have requested be worked on (detailed on page 3), there are many Logan House Rules which your dog will learn over time. They are taught with a smile, consistency and compassion in a way that your dog will understand and enjoy. Training new behaviors requires hundreds (some say thousands) of repetitions in order for learning to stick: the length of time your dog stays at Pet Connection Dog Training will determine how many repetitions will be feasible. Young puppies have a short attention span and therefore sessions will be shorter than for dogs who can focus a bit longer. If your dog has been engaging in unwanted behaviors for some time, it will take significantly longer to modify them and train your dog what to do instead. Diana will make every effort possible to get the maximum number of repetitions in while your dog is with her but it will be up to you to continue the process forever after.

SOCIALIZATION Your dog will get opportunities for socialization (other dogs, people, places, animals, experiences). Diana s priority is to keep your dog safe. Please be assured that she will take every precaution she feels necessary while exposing your dog to new things. Diana frequently visits local dog-friendly open spaces, farms, downtown Yarmouth, beaches, and other fun locations. REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS It is important to understand that there are no guarantees for success. There is no magic pill, no easy solution, no quick fix for any training challenge. Every dog is different, some behaviors are more difficult to modify (particularly if they have had time to become a solid habit) and genetics can make the process more challenging (e.g., a dog may be predisposed to be fearful due to the temperament of his mother). Some behaviors require more repetitions than are possible given the amount of time your dog is in Diana s care. There is a possibility that your goals will not be fully met. It is important to have realistic expectations. Don t blame the dog for failing to meet human expectations (Chris Bach). COMMUNICATION/VISITATION Diana will send you a brief e-mail on a daily basis. You may call her on her cell at any time (207-252-9352) up until 9PM. You are welcome to visit, if you wish; please call ahead so you can be sure she and your dog are at home - she will frequently work with your dog in a variety of places. She will contact you immediately if she has any questions or concerns. HOMEWORK You will be given reading or other assignments while your dog is in Diana s care and it s important that you work towards completing them so everyone is on the same page. FOLLOW-UP It is your responsibility and yours alone to make sure your dog s training continues to be successful after he leaves Pet Connection Dog Training. To this end, follow-up visits at your home with as many family members as possible are a vital part of the process. Materials and instructions will be provided at the conclusion of the Board and Train session. Arrangements for the follow-up visit(s) should be made prior to or at the time the dog gets picked up. RATES (payable in advance by check or cash; please make checks out to Diana Logan ) Day rate: $60 per day (9AM-5PM) 1 week: $75 per day or $525; includes one one-hour follow-up private session at your home*. 2 weeks: $72 per day or $1008; includes two one-hour follow-up private sessions at your home*. 3 weeks: $70 per day or $1470; includes three one-hour follow-up private sessions at your home*. *distances beyond 20 miles from North Yarmouth may incur a mileage surcharge of $1 per additional mile; one-way only. terms & conditions Pet Connection Dog Training carries liability insurance for boarding and training animals. A copy of coverage is available upon request. Diana Logan herein referred to as TRAINER, strives to provide your dog with the best possible care, however, due to the extreme unpredictability of animals, TRAINER cannot accept responsibility for any mishaps of any extraordinary or unusual nature (i.e., bites, accidental death, etc.) or for any complications in administering medications to the animal(s). TERMS and CONDITIONS 1. TRAINER is NOT LIABLE FOR DOG S PERFORMANCE. Although TRAINER will use all reasonable care to train OWNER s dog, it cannot guarantee that the dog will respond adequately at all times. OWNER agrees that TRAINER will not be liable for any damage or loss resulting from the dog s failure to respond to any cue(s) or behavior modification for which TRAINER trained the dog. TRAINER agrees to train OWNER S dog in reasonable manner, however the effectiveness of the completed training program depends upon many factors over which TRAINER has no control. Such factors include, but are not limited to, the future health of the dog, the frequency and effectiveness of training reinforcement which OWNER must give the dog and the degree of leadership and structure which OWNER provides for the dog.

2. Should the dog s failure to respond to any cue(s) result in damage to the property or person of any person (including OWNER), OWNER agrees to absolve TRAINER from any and all obligations and to pay any such damage to such person. OWNER further agrees to hold TRAINER harmless from any and all such claims. OWNER shall provide documentation of vaccinations or titers if requested (bordatella not required; for puppies the first round of shots is acceptable). 3. TRAINER is authorized to perform care and services as outlined by this contract. OWNER agrees that if at any time TRAINER deems OWNER S dog needs veterinary care, if urgent, he shall be immediately taken to the local veterinary clinic. An effort will be made to contact OWNER prior to the visit. If veterinary care is not deemed urgent, OWNER will be notified first. TRAINER is authorized to approve medical and/or emergency treatment (excluding euthanasia) as recommended by a veterinarian. The owner agrees to pay any associated vet bills. 4. TRAINER agrees to provide the services stated in this contract in a reliable, caring and trustworthy manner. In consideration of these services and as an express condition thereof, OWNER expressly waives and relinquishes any and all claims against TRAIN- ER except those arising from negligence or willful misconduct on the part of TRAINER. 5. OWNER understands and takes full responsibility for prompt payment of fees prior to time of service (checks to be made out to Diana Logan ). 6. In the event of personal emergency or illness of TRAINER Caregiver, TRAINER will contact OWNER immediately and a refund for remaining time will be made. 7. Should TRAINER Caregiver be bitten or otherwise exposed to any disease or ailment received from OWNER S animal(s), it is the OWNER S responsibility to pay all costs and damages incurred by the victim. 8. TRAINER reserves the right to terminate this contract at any time before or during its term if TRAINER, in its sole discretion, determines that a danger exists to health and safety. If concerns prohibit TRAINER from caring for dog, client will be contacted immediately and a partial refund will be made for any remaining time. 9. OWNER agrees to complete the homework assignments during the training period and read the materials provided at the completion of the period (if possible, materials will be provided electronically). TRAINING PRIORITIES TRAINER agrees to provide training for OWNER S dog. This training consists of but not limited to those behaviors detailed below. Please list the top 3 behaviors you would like modified, providing as much detail as possible. 1 2 3 TIME FRAME 1. The term of this contract shall be from (date/time) through (date/time) 2.
