Spring is a busy time for our club, with various performance events and our specialty show. Check out the results of our tracking test, hunt tests, and shooting ratings in this newsletter. Also note our upcoming specialty show at the Raleigh March circuit and club dinner at the Backyard Bistro. The Weimaraner National Specialty will be held just after the all-breed shows in Perry, GA in April. Our club is helping out with some of the activities. Perry is not that far from Raleigh think about attending and seeing a large variety of Weims, or, better yet, participating in the large variety of activities offered. Betta Breuhaus Tarheel Weimaraner Newsletter, January 2013 A Letter from our Rescue President Winter Greetings from Tarheel Weimarner Rescue. While our dogs are snuggly inside and laying on the couch, I do worry about our short coated Weimaraners having to live outside in pens and doghouses. We hope to resolve just such a case, two sadly emaciated Weims living in an outdoor pen without sufficient shelter and not enough food. The photos would make you cry! Officers of Rescue Pres VP Sec. Our Placement officers have worked very hard arranging the perfect match between dogs and their new owners We are still getting shelter Weims almost weekly and are struggling finding foster homes. Most are going into Veterinary care first, heartworm, hook and whipworms plus Kennel Cough are the biggest health concerns. Continued on Page 2 Website: www.tarheelweimrescue.org

Letter from the TWR President Continued We have added a new Board member and are thrilled to welcome Kathy LeCavalier. Kathy has been a friend to TWR for many years as a foster, transporter and kindhearted volunteer. Thankfully she now has joined our team and has brought much expertise and "heart" to Weimaraner Rescue. We had a very successful Amazing Grays wine tasting at the Greater Charleston Weimaraner Club s Specialty "after party". Our wine brings much excitement to Weimaraner fanciers; happily we sold many cases of wine mostly to exhibitors that purchased wine from us last year. Thank you GCWC and especially Elena Lamberson for opening your beautiful home to us and for promoting our wine tasting. We split the proceeds of our wine sales with our South Carolina "sister" rescue, working together for a common goal is rewarding and important. Thank you for supporting Weimaraner Rescue, Rosi Adams President Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue Rescue Report: Rescue is busy as usual, however we ve been encouraged by several applications in the last few weeks and a string of placements! Some of our placement officers have been on a roll and we hope the trend continues!! We currently have approximately 27 dogs in various stages of foster care, foster with intent to adopt, boarding (we try very hard to limit this but The Tarheel Weimaraner Newsletter January 2013 2

it s unavoidable at times), etc. Due to the closure of Wolf Creek Weim Rescue in eastern TN, we have been called upon to rescue dogs in that area also on occasion. We have been taking turns with Weim Rescue of the South and others to cover the East TN area when possible. The good news is that we are developing a list of volunteers in that area who can also help us with Western NC if and when it becomes necessary. We re doing what we can to save as many of our gray friends as possible! We placed a dog this week into a wonderful home. She is 6 yrs old and has some separation anxiety and we were quite worried we wouldn t find the right situation for her. She is now in a home with a gentleman who, for health reasons, doesn t leave his house much. His nurse and the other folks who help care for him were in full support of his having a companion and our sweet girl needed someone to love her a match made in heaven! He is thrilled and we are so happy to have helped them find each other! As always, if you know someone who is in the position to foster or help in any way, send us their information or direct them to our website. Christine Flock, TWR Secretary Rescue Wine!!! Check it out your choice of red or white wine, with proceeds to benefit Tarheel Rescue! Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue is offering our very own, trademarked Amazing Grays wine. It will be sold for $16.00 per bottle and for a discounted price of $14.00 per bottle if a case of 12 bottles is ordered. The case can also be mixed half red and half white. All proceeds will go to Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue. The wine is available in red and white and usually retails for $20.00 per bottle. Below is the description of the wine and our beautiful label: Sauvignon Blanc The white is 85% Sauvignon Blanc, the wine maker and I blended in 15% Semillon to add a bit of texture and balance. All of the grapes are from the region of Napa Valley. The white wine has some nice notes of Tropical Fruit with a little Grapefruit, great acidity very crisp and clean. The Semillon adds a bit more body to the Sauvignon Blanc. Red Blend 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Tannat, 10% Petite Syrah (Cabernet was aged in French and American oak barrels). All from Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon deep ruby/purple color as well as notes of black currants, blackberry, spice, cedar, and subtle toasty oak. It is medium to full-bodied with fairly soft tannins, and a long elegant finish. The Tannat adds nice color to the wine, and the Petite Syrah gives additional dark fruit with a touch of chocolate. This wine will obviously make wonderful presents for friends, neighbors, puppy people or yourself. Contact Rosi Adams if you would like to buy some of this wine! TWR License Plate Frame The cost is $10. To order, contact Christine at cmflock@roadrunner.com as they are not on the TWR website yet. OR go to the www.tarheelweimrescue.org website and pay using paypal and just put license plate holder in the notes. The holders are made according to state specs, meaning nothing is covered up on the license plate itself when you use one they re legal. The Tarheel Weimaraner Newsletter January 2013 3

The Raleigh Christmas Parade was proposed, and will be investigated as an option. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:10 PM. After a week of rain leading up to the event, we were fortunate to have a sunny weekend up in Virginia for our judges, tracklayers and exhibitors. And despite some muddy conditions, the test was a success! Our Judges were Jack Sappenfield II and Stephanie Crawford. They did an exceptional job, efficiently plotting fields on Saturday with our tracklayer volunteers and testing on Sunday. Both Jack and Stephanie took the time to teach those who were working with them about the sport of tracking and how to properly set up testing fields. I learned some new things and truly enjoyed working with this team of judges. We had 2 TD exhibitors (1 Weimaraner, 1 Wirehair Dachshund) and 2 TDX exhibitors (1 Weimaraner, 1 Basset Hound). The handler/dog teams put in great effort on test day and produced a new TD title and our first ever TDX title!!! It was very exciting to witness. The TD title went to FC Rellih's Hopi Kachina Spirit, MW, CGC (Dachshund Wirehair) and her handler Linda Snyder and the TDX title went to CH Hokieland-Bridi's RV-Tech, TD (Basset Hound) and his handler Karen Highley. Congratulations to both! Of course this event could not take place or be a success without our team of dedicated volunteers. THANK YOU to our tracklayers: Joe Haggerty, Susan Baldridge, Louis Arendt, Lisa Rowden and Cindy Wright. Special THANKS to Carol Parron, my "crowd control" officer, Melissa VanMastrigt, my "consultant and transporter", Larry Edwards, and Helen Sanderford who assisted me with the duties required to put on the test. Some comments I received via email regarding the event "thanks for such a wonderful weekend, great fields and wonderful members" "Thanks to the Club volunteers...you did a wonderful job running the event. Hats off to Tarheel!" "As usual, TWC ran a very professional trial---i always enjoy myself there." It was another fun weekend of tracking in Virginia. We are fortunate to have such a pretty setting for our test in Alton, VA---come out and watch or participate next year!!!" The Shooting Ratings took place on Friday afternoon. Seven of the 9 dogs entered qualified; 2 at the Shooting Dog Excellent level, and 5 at the Novice Shooting Dog level. Huge thanks to Phil and Karen, who did a LOT of work leading up to the test to groom the grounds. Everyone who attended both the Ratings and HT had nothing but good things to say about the natural hunting environment, the variety of fields the dogs were able to work, etc. Special thanks to Karen Hearne and Melissa Siegmund for judging the Ratings test. Thank you to Gretchen Stephenson, Betta Breuhaus, Rick Yates, Carol Parron, and Helen Sanderford for your help in planning, bird planting, etc. Thanks to Phil Hearne and Charlie Parron for shooting for us. Phil Hearne has always wanted to have hunt tests at his property, but up until we decided to give his place a try, his dream had been unrealized. We were a bit nervous about whether or not things would run smoothly, but we are very happy to say that the hunt tests came together beautifully! We had great judges Lee Holbrook and Jeff Wade on Saturday and Joe Stringer, Phil Hearne and Melissa Siegmund on Sunday. Our able gunners did a great job also Mike Sigmund, Charlie Parron, and Rock Rothrock. Thanks so much to Betta Breuhaus for handling all the duties of Secretary, picking up the birds, planning, organizing too many things to mention! Thanks to Mike Flock for cooking nice warm meals for both days of the test and serving them out in the field in the sun. We truly had some beautiful weather, cold but beautiful. The burn barrel in which Tom Siegmund so expertly built and stoked the fire was a big hit - thank you, Tom! We couldn t hold these events without the help of many club members, so a special thanks to Carol and Charlie Parron, Helen Sanderford, Rick Yates, Melissa and Tom Siegmund, Gretchen Stephenson, Will and Kelly Southerland, Eric Libow, Kathi and Joe Stringer, Jessica Scharff, Joan Mulford, Kevin Perez, and Sally Feltner, Christine Flock, Chair Thank you to all those who helped to make the 2013 TWC hunt tests a big success this year. I was very worried since we were using grounds that had never been used for a hunt test before worried about whether people would like the grounds, worried about where people would park if we got a lot of rain and it was wet/muddy, worried about whether we would have enough help or anticipated enough needs. And at the last minute, worried about the health of the birds. As Christine said, it all came together beautifully and we have had lots of compliments from participants. Numerous people have commented on how friendly and helpful our club members were to them. They all liked the grounds (judges too) and we had great weather for the dogs to run. The Tarheel Weimaraner Newsletter January 2013 6

Special thanks go to Christine and Mike Flock who chaired the event, organized a lot of stuff, and even made the most delicious hot lunches (BBQ on Saturday, chili on Sunday). Special thanks also to Phil and Karen Hearne, who allowed us to have our hunt tests on their property this year. They did a huge amount of work ahead of time, improving on the grounds and getting them ready for the tests. Also special thanks to Joe Stringer for stepping in and judging Master on Sunday when Karen was sick with the flu. There were so many club members there helping, mentioned above by Christine. Some were there to run their dogs and ended up helping, some came to help even though they did not have a dog to run. As they say it takes a village and we certainly had one there!
