NORCAL GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB Golden Notes www.norcalgrc.org Elected Officers: President Eileen Oshiro Secretary/ Treasurer Lisa Newton 1675 Fallen Leaf Los Altos, CA 94024 VP Performance Terry Southard VP Breed Jeanetta Gulden VP Field Debbie Tandoc Director Nancy Kelly Director Linda Lang JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013 From the President VOLUME 43, ISSUE I So much for a calm end to 2012 and start of 2013! Skyline KC and Del Valle have decided to drop the Thursday and Monday all-breed shows, and are proposing to make the breed specialties "in conjunction with" the Del Valle show. Details are still being defined, but we would keep our rings, grooming area, raffle, etc. Del Valle assumes all judges' contracts, ring fees, judges' hospitality, MB-F costs, etc. We would get $5 per dog, can still have our raffle, offer trophies, pay a little extra for larger rosettes. Major questions surround how obedience and rally will work. After some initial panic that I will admit to, the Board and 2013 Specialty committee people (Dee Dee Anderson and Toni Maita), are looking at all our options. We are also looking at how this might affect the 2016 National. We will keep the membership informed! Saturday we had a fantastic seminar by Dr Claudia Orlandi on the ABCs of Dog Breeding. Dr Orlandi is a fabulous, exciting speaker and I wish you all could have attended! If you have a chance another time, I recommend her seminar. Hope to see you all at the Annual Awards Banquet next month. GOLDEN NOTES Argus Rise of the Phoenix, CD, AX, AXJ Dogs are not our whole lives but they make our lives whole Roger Caras The C word is something that haunts every owner of our beautiful breed. Some say that the reason we are experiencing a rise in the number of cases of cancer is partly due to better veterinary medicine and owner knowledge. Prior to the advent of information, it is thought that most cases of cancer went undiagnosed and we simply attributed the deaths to natural causes. Regardless of the how or why, the reality is there our dogs are dying of cancer. My first experience with cancer was three straight cases of hemangiosarcoma. Our boy, Arsey, who introduced me to the world of dog shows was only 8 years old when we saw the first signs lack of appetite, lack of coloring in the gums, lethargy but even after removing the spleen and aggressive chemotherapy, he only survived six months. The cancer attacked his lungs. When Keegan s diagnosis hit us, I thought my heart would stop. But we again attacked it as best as we could with surgery and chemotherapy. To our great sadness, Keegan lost his battle six weeks later as the cancer attacked his liver. He also was only 8 years old. Then our lovely Rikki showed symptoms and radiographs confirmed hemangiosarcoma and this time it hit the heart. We decided not to treat the cancer. Much to our surprise, Rikki survived for almost a year, passing away on Page 2 her own terms, peacefully in my arms one afternoon. She was nine years old. We hold out hope that one day this horrible disease will be eradicated from our lives. Until then, we continue to work with veterinary researchers to do the best we can to increase survival rates and diminish the number of cases each year. Please consider becoming involved with the various cancer research projects. The GRCA has a list of current projects as well as information about the various cancers that strike. Hugs to all the Golden loves of our lives. MADGiC: Making Advanced Discoveries in Golden Cancers Study Update http://www.cvm.umn.edu/cic/current/oncology/home.html#srcbst Golden Retrievers have been one of the most popular breeds in America for decades, but unfortunately these dogs also have one of the highest incidences of hemangiosarcoma and lymphoma. In this three-year, multi-institutional study, researchers are examining genetic traits that contribute to risk and progression of these cancers in Golden Retrievers. Comparison of DNA samples from affected and unaffected Golden Retrievers has identified several candidate regions associated with development of hemangiosarcoma and lymphoma. DNA analysis in the corresponding tumor samples has revealed numerous genetic abnormalities and has shown that tumors can be separated into several molecular subtypes. Results identifying lymphoma subtypes based on molecular analysis have been accepted for publication. Once all data are collected and integrated, the research team will correlate how genetic mutations in Golden Retrievers influence risk factors for hemangiosarcoma and lymphoma and how these r isk factors influence biological behaviors of tumors. The longterm goals are to understand what causes hemangiosarcoma and lymphoma and to develop strategies to prevent and treat these cancers in Golden Retrievers and other breeds. Jaime F.
