Voice for Animals By Marisa Andres Stevenson Middle Grade 6 I was hopping around in my cage. My stomach still hurt from my surgery a few days ago. I got spayed. The people who were cleaning my cage just layed a single piece of paper and whole lot of hay. They plopped me on the hay with a bowl of bunny pellets and only one sheet of newspaper to pee on. They should know me better than that because I ve lived here for two days. I pee a lot you know. I didn t have any friends to comfort me -no one to talk to or wiggle my nose at or even to lay next to. So many loud voices around me, whereas before at my other owner s house, it was quiet. Then one day my owner who was always too busy for me decided she couldn t take care of me and brought me here to this little newspaper hay house. I missed my other owner but please get a home today. After I peed I started cleaning myself- stroking my face and whiskers for stray pieces of hay and grass that came from the bowl of food. I heard high voices, like the ones from my first house, it was two girls and lady. I put on a cute face on so that someone would adopt me. The smaller girl picked me up and said, Mom, he s so cute and adorable. The sign says he s a white dwarf. Can we take him home? I really wanted to go home with someone since my last owner was too busy for me. What shall we call him? the girls questioned each other. The older one wanted my name to be Tofu, just because I was white and squishy. I was okay with that as long as I got to go home with them. The smaller girl kept saying, let s name him Mochi! Mochi is white and squishy, too, you know. The two girls picked me up and took me to the counter to pay for me. Hello new home! There I sat in a little home with a peek space and roof that made me sway. At last, I belong to a family! I am so excited. After a few minutes of moving, they take me out from the peek space and start rubbing my ears and eyes. They call it a massage. Ooooo does that feel good! I can feel the love they have for me! With aloud shout the little girl said hi my name is MARISA. The bigger girl said quiet voices or else he can get stressed and be scared of us forever. Their mom and the bigger girl introduced them selves to me. The big girl was Joy and the mom was mommy and the smaller girl was Marisa. When we finally arrived and stopped all the jiggling and moving, I got to hop into this really big black peek space that had lots of hay and bunny pellets with lots of goodies carrots corn that were dried. There was also a drinking bottle that had a yellow floatie in it and when I drank, it bobbed up and down. These girls really loved me! They rubbed my stomach and cheeks it felt so good that I closed my eyes and my head slowly moved backward.this was a bunnies life.something

smelled good- I think it was that they were cutting up celery, and apples. Oooo I am going to love this family! I said. This is the meaning of family. Ohana means family, and no one gets left behind.

Adopt Me Please!? By Deanna Jarrett #5 Stevenson Middle Grade 6 I just wish my owner would take care of me. Treat me well and give me what i want and need. I feel very unwanted. I HATE being locked up in this cage it s just cruel. I HATE being not loved the way I wished to beloved. Why am I treated this way? I was never bad or mean to you or anyone else. I was never ever cruel to anyone. I feel so sad that you treated me this way, When I did nothing except look sit there and look innocent and cute. You made me feel so unhappy and frightened by my own owner and wondering if I would pass away next? Finally, I m in the HUMANE SOCIETY!! I am finally loved, happy and not worried what will happen to me next or will I pass away today or tomorrow. I feel so free and safe and I can finally play around with others and not get hit, kicked and spit on. I love my new family who adopted me!! They took me into there caring family. I feel so wanted and happy with my new caring family. I get all my needs and supplies I need for a happy healthy life. I would thank the HUMANE SOCIETY for finding me from a dangerous place to now a fun happy place where I m wanted and safe.

I m your friend! By, Abby Rae Chung-Hoon Stevenson Middle, Grade 6 Ahhhhh! A little bit higher,no lower lower, ahhh there s the spot! Dogs should be having that feeling all the time! You should you should live and care for them as much as possible! All animals should have love and care every day! In my mind I have a few reasons you should take care and give your animal love! Pets should always be fed and given water. If you leave for work it is necessary to feed your animal and give it some water. Then when you come home from work or even school, you can try to feed them and put water in their bowl if majority/all of their food is gone.you can not only feed them 3 times a week, That s not enough because you are starving you animal, So feed your animal daily! You should take your dog out for walks so it can get some air and do its business. When you dog poops, you must pick it up because you are responsible for taking care of your dog and that s like a third of taking of taking care of your dog. Especially if its only someone else's yard! Taking care of an animal(s) is really hard, if you don t have time to. If you don t and you think you cant take care of it give, it to the Humane Society! If you can, please do all of the above! ALOHA!

Hawaiian Humane Society By Micah Taniguchi Moanalua High School, 11 th grade Do you like being hurt or tested on? If not then that s the same way animals feel. Animals should not be experimented on or tortured; they have feeling just like us. What happens if you were to be experimented on? Wouldn t you fight back or sue for neglect and unlawful experimentation, but animals can not fight back but they do have feeling just like us. The way you can help animal cruelty is by supporting the Hawaiian Humane Society in saving animals from neglecting owners. Animals may be different in certain ways but in reality they are very similar. Animals require love, kindness, and caring just like us humans. When you are hurt don t you cry? Well guess what animals do to, they have feeling to just like us. You can not just go hurting animals just because you feel like it cruel and just not right. What happens if that happened to you? I am pretty sure you would fight back, but animals can not fight back; all animals can do is sit their and be beaten to death or get hurt so severely that they die from the wounds inflicted upon them. What kind of person would do this to such a sweet innocent animal? I know who would, people with no heart or compassion, that s the kind of people who would treat something so innocent like this. If people had a heart they would not treat an innocent type of animal like this, they would love and care for it instead of kill it or torture it to death. If animals could speak what they feel I am sure that they would say â œwhy do you humans treat us like a pieces of dirt, what have we done to you? We have not hurt you, we have not tortured you in any ways, and we have not experimented on you at any time. So why do you do this to us. Why do you treat us like a piece of dirt? All we have given you is our unconditional love in the way we know how to give it, we might make some mistakes along the way, but didn t you make mistakes before? So what is the difference in the way we make mistakes? Everything living makes mistakes, no living thing is perfect, if you say you are perfect then you are conceited. So tell us animals are you conceited? Do you have any heart or compassion? What will it take for us animals to stop from getting tortured, experimented on, and neglected? Just tell us this. What can we do to stop all the violence towards us animals?â This is what animals would say if they could speak out their feelings right now. So if you feel that you would like to stop animal cruelty support the Hawaiian Humane Society in the battle between the animal cruelties. It is time to take action and stop animal neglect and show animals that we do have heart and we do have compassion for them.

Making Hawaii a Dog-Friendly Place By Tatiana Fudo St. Andrew s Priory, 8 th grade Many people around the world are softhearted towards dogs. There is a widely known idea that dogs are mans best friend. But, do we treat them like our best friends? Seems not to me, because everywhere I go I see NO DOGS allowed signs. If they re really our best friends shouldn t we open up to them and let them into stores, and more parks. People shouldn t have to sneak them into stores and movies because they can t leave them at home. Also, what about airplanes? If we are allowed to sit in relaxing chairs, watch movies, and do other leisurely things, why do we make dogs sit in little crates shivering? Shouldn't they be in the airplane sitting with their owners? These are some of the things I think about when I think taking my dog someplace. I could change some things, I would change all the dog unfriendly rules, and attempt to make Hawaii a more dog friendly place. I d also make sure all the dog owners keep their dogs, and not just let them lose on the street when they don t want to dog anymore. Dogs are supposed to be a part of our family. Also like another sister or brother. If a family was going thought a rough time and losing money, would they give away one of their daughters? Probably not, so if a dog is a family member, they shouldn t give away to the humane society. Same way if one of the family members were sick, the y would take him/her to the hospital, and if they do that, they should do the same to the dog. My dog, Buddy, she is a female, was sick a while back. She had a type of failure with her lungs. We took her to the hospital and got her fixed up. She needed four shots, but in the end she was fine. Now she s growing up to be a strong dog, and she is currently one year and nine months. Another problem with dogs is that the have babies. Some families don t want the babies so they give it away to the humane society. If these families weren t prepared for puppies, they should have spayed/neutered the dog when it was a puppy, even if it costs a little extra. And if the dog does have puppies, before giving it away, at least try and find them a good home. I really hope that in the future, Hawaii becomes more dog friendly, and if I could do anything I would be happy to do anything, especially since I have a dog.
