March/April 2017 Issue The Guardian Your Newsletter from The German Shepherd Dog Club of Atlanta From the President Dear Members, Well we are now into March and planning our spring Fun Match. Please note the date Sunday, April 23! The match will be held at the same location as last year 1400 Parker Road, Conyers, Ga. 30094. Breed judge is Andrea Washburn and Performance judges TBA. We have also looked at a new meeting/training facility -- both Joan Turner and Erika Tracy feel it is excellent. We will have our March club meeting - the 9th - at the Humane Society, but will be meeting as of April 13th at... Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners GVS, 455 Abernathy Rd. NE, Atlanta, GA 30328, phone 404-459-0903. I do not have the meeting room number yet but will let everyone know. Our next board meeting will be March 11 at GVS 11 AM until 3PM?? This year, to ease the burden on North Georgia, we will take the Friday slot per our agreement, will do catalogue and other responsibilities they over took last year. This can work if we all pull together and fix mistakes. A four-show weekend is going to be a strong draw with the judging line up which is Jamie Walker and Sheree Moses for Atlanta and the La Rosa's for North Georgia. There will be a show committee meeting soon and I will keep all informed. In the meantime, everyone stay well and enjoy your dogs. I'm having a blast with mine being home again! Respectfully submitted, Connie Irvine President Both Atlanta and North Georgia clubs have started working on our annual fall specialty show in September more information to follow. We will definitely need help, ring stewards, runners, etc We found Dixie Ring Stewards are way beyond our financial ability so we all need to chip in and make this work. We could also ask ADOG and AOC if they have any helpers to loan us. Page 1 of 10

IPO/Schutzhund The 2017 Southeast Regional IPO Championship was held in February at Veterans Memorial Park in Dawsonville, Georgia. Here are some pictures from the competition. The turnout was impressive and the working dogs were magnificent to watch. The sport of IPO (IPO stands for Internationale Prüfungs-Ordnung), formerly known as Schutzhund, is a challenging three part sport (obedience, tracking and protection) which was originally designed as a breed test for the German Shepherd Dog, and has grown in to a popular sport, as well as continuing to function as a breed test. A Schutzhund/IPO title is a pre-requisite for the German Shepherd Breed Survey or Koerung in Germany. As a sport, several countries hold regional and national competitions. In Germany, the big trial each year is the BSP or Bundessiegerprüfung. There is also a world competition (WUSV) each year held under FCI international rules. To find an IPO club near you go to the website here: http://www.southeastregionusca.com/ Page 5 of 10

About the Club Records are vague, but it seems that The German Shepherd Dog Club of Atlanta was founded in 1955 when a small group of breeders and owners interested in the German Shepherd Dog met in Atlanta, Georgia. The first President was Mrs. Michelle Leathers Billings who passed away in October 2013. The purpose of the club was the improvement of the breed. Today, the club s goal is the same. Through programs and activities, members learn about all aspects of the German Shepherd Dog, including mental and physical development; the breed standard; working ability; breeding; care and rearing of puppies, etc. Programs are presented at monthly meetings held on the second Thursday of month, except for July, October, and December. Meetings are at 8:00 PM. Both prospective members and non-members are welcome. The club holds numerous special events including two breed Specialty shows each year and also Obedience and Rally competitions. Puppy matches, Temperament Testing and AKC Good Citizen tests are scheduled through the year. Each summer at the Annual Awards Banquet, trophies are presented to members whose dogs have earned titles over the year. A Holiday party is held in December.
