Houston Beagle & Hound Rescue, Inc. Because they deserve a second chance... 2013 First Quarter Newsletter Thank you To all of you wonderful people that donated to the Annual Garage Sale. You really came through for the Beagles and made it a huge success!! Just so you know what happens to everything you donated brand new stuff, we pull out and use for Silent Auction items or as prizes at Events; some stuff Beagle Rescue can use so we pull that out too. The leftover books were taken to HalfPriced Books and sold and what doesn t sell, we donate to Purple Heart which helps the veterans. Some people donated money because they didn t have items to donate; one adopter rented a van and drove down from Dallas with some really great stuff. And two wonderful adopters from San Antonio worked at the sale on Friday and Saturday that helped us more than you know. Don t you just love Beagle people! But what you really want to know is how much did we raise!?!?!?!?! How does $4,700.00 sound!!!! Yea for the Beagles!! Yea for all of you that donated!! You are simply the best!! One thing the Beagles ask of you DON T FORGET NEXT YEAR!! They will need your help again! Give your friends and family a heads up to save everything they can because we will take it! How we re doing Since the first of the year, we have placed only 22 Beagles in their forever homes. (That is a very sad number) We know better than anyone that Beagles aren t for everyone and we try to screen adopters as carefully as we can. We are not about adopting out a precious Beagle to everyone that applies for one We are about finding the best possible forever homes with someone that truly appreciates the breed. There are some really stupid websites out there that say the Beagle will work for any family situation, any living arrangement, any anything. As Beagle advocates, we know that is NOT true. But what is the number one requirement for having a Beagle??? A very good sense of humor!

Happenings Monthly Meet & Greet is held the second Sunday of each month (unless there is an event that conflicts). They are held at Paws Pet Resort, 3425 Couch Street, Houston 77018. For more information, visit the website at: http://www.houstonbeaglerescue.org Facebook users be sure to Friend Houston Beagle Rescue. One of our volunteers, Simone, maintains it for us and posts wonderful Beagle pictures. It also includes information about upcoming events. Other Happenings: April 13 th Pet Expo at Reliant Park The Beagles have attended every year and love this event! You really should come and experience it. Shorty, the PitBoss from Animal Planet along with Hercules, is the special guest again this year. We re located near the entrance, across from the stage. Come and give the prize wheel a spin for just $1 a spin. May 18 th Annual BYOB (Bring Your Own Beagle) Food, Fun & Festivities for you and your Beagle it gets more fun every year! Location is still being decided upon by the Beagles but they will be sending out an invitation very soon. It s the most fun your four-legged and two-legged kids can have all year. June The Beagles are thinking about holding a Yappy Hour they re still recovering from the Garage Sale so give them a little time to work it out. July 18 th 21st Reliant Dog Show, Reliant Center. This is a huge event and Yes the Beagles are okay with it. The Beagles like breeders that are responsible and do it for the betterment of the breed not like the backyard breeders. And everyone should witness the beautiful Beagles that are showing in the ring. And please come by our booth and give the prize wheel a spin. The Beagle Corner

Once again, the Beagles are taking this opportunity to speak their minds. They are always keeping their noses to the ground trying to sniff out some interesting items to pass along. The Beagles have decided that they wanted get some basic facts out there. Heartworms what causes them? One simple mosquito bite Yep that s all it takes. They don t come from drinking dirty water, not from smelling feces, not from being around other infected dogs. Mosquitoes are everywhere inside your house and everywhere outside. Treatment is very painful and very expensive so don t forget that monthly pill EVERY MONTH!!! Tapeworm These come from eating a flea just one is all it takes. That s why it s sooooo important to put that flea preventative on every month. Tapeworms can be inside your dog and you may not even know it. Talk to your Vet!! De-Fleaing your Yard We all know the containers say the yard is safe once the chemicals have dried but do you worry that your Beagle has walked on the grass and then is licking their paws? The Beagles worry. So they ask - Do you want to get and keep your yard flea free and not worry about harming your children and your Beagle?? The Beagles have the answer! They are called Beneficial Nematodes. What is that you ask? Go to www.buglogical.com and read how great these microscopic things are. And, the best part?? They really work and are totally safe. And once you ve read about them, just place an order and be sure to follow the instructions. Questions send me an email. Nails how much white is showing past the pink part?? Shouldn t be any more than about ¼ of an inch. Ears Lift the earflap and take a look and take a whiff. Does it smell yucky? Is there black wax in there? Sounds like a good ear cleaning is needed. See your Vet! Anal glands is your Beagle a little stinky around the back end? Are they chewing at the base of their tail? Could be those anal glands need maintenance.

Baths once a month is good but DON T FORGET TO IMMEDIATELY PUT THE COLLAR BACK ON!! Do we want to talk about the emails we get that a Beagle escaped after its bath with no collar or tags on? Bottom Line As illustrated by the Garage Sale, the Beagles will always need your help. They thank you for giving them their great home and for never forgetting who saved them to begin with. The Beagles hope you will help out whenever you can, take great care of them and know how much you are appreciated. We hope you come to as many events as you can and show your support. You also get to spend time with other Beagle people and swap stories. And don t forget the people behind the Beagles of Houston Beagle Rescue will always be here if you need help or advice. Wish you could help but can t afford much? How about just $10 a month. If we can get 100 people signed up that s $1,000 a month the Beagles can always count on for help. When everyone pitches in, it s amazing what this small monthly donation can do. Please go to our website and sign up today. Here s your poem from the Beagles: Rescue Dog Poem A rescue dog will have a tale to tell It may be sad, or of a life of Hell It may be a story of a once loved pup Who found herself homeless when a marriage broke up Or a faithful companion, whose owner's passed on And the poor little dog doesn't know where they've gone. Or of a dog that s been beaten, never had the chance to live And yet gain his trust - he ll have so much love to give. A pup that grew out of the cute, cuddly stage, Has grown big and unruly and is now at that age So he gets given away, it s such a shame

When it s the lack of training that s really to blame. Some rescue dogs may be quite old Just need a nice home, out of the cold A warm cozy bed, for weary old bones No dog should spend it s last days on it s own. Rescue dogs can be misunderstood Often seen as damaged goods But a pre-owned dog has much to offer And compared to a pup, can be far less bother A rescue dog may not know how to play But a little bit of kindness should show them the way. Some rescue dogs will have great credentials, Others show promise and heaps of potential. Some need guidance, to learn how to trust For others, some training will be a must But what you put in, you ll get back tenfold A loyal friend, with a heart of gold He may be pure, cross or mixed breed But one things for sure-he ll be in need Of a loving home, a new 'mum' or 'dad' Surely with this, he'll stop being so sad. A rescue dog is a breed apart Please find space for one in your heart. THANK YOU FROM EVERYONE AT HOUSTON BEAGLE RESCUE ESPECIALLY THE BEAGLES!!!
