Community Foundation staff conducted a site visit? Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer Do you know of a business or professional group that may be willing to donate their services or offer them at a reduced cost? If you or someone you know may be willing to help, email us and we ll be in touch. We are always interested in contacting hotel chains or linen suppliers who may be willing to donate blankets, bedspreads or towels that might otherwise be thrown out. As part of our commitment to the community, any excess supplies offered to our organization will be shared with other shelter and rescue groups in Kern County. Critters Without Litters is grateful for any donations of office or cleaning supplies. Every dollar saved through donations of goods is a dollar that can go towards spaying and neutering more pets. Cash donations help Critters Without Litters continue in our mission to serve the community. Contributions are a terrific way to celebrate a special occasion, support a cause that is close to your heart or to remember a beloved pet. As a 501(c)3 organization, all donations to Critters Without Litters are tax-deductible. 2

Statements & Search Criteria Statements Mission Statement Critters Without Litters, a non-profit organization founded in 2012, shall provide high-volume, high-quality, lowcost companion animal sterilization; to end the preventable euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets in Kern County through strong alliances with the community, local businesses and nonprofit organizations; to increase the number of cats and dogs that are spayed and neutered, while promoting animal health and safety within our community. Background Statement Critters Without Litters was founded by Joann and Larry Keller in 2012. Long-time residents and successful Bakersfield business owners, the Kellers began the FIX YOUR PIT voucher program in January 2010. Residents could go to Fortress Storage and for $40 receive a voucher to pay for sterilization services for their pit bull or pit bull mix, one of the most frequently euthanized breeds in the shelter system. Since the voucher program was founded, more than 2,000 vouchers were given to community residents. Still, it wasn t enough. People called every day asking about assistance for sterilizing cats or dog breeds other than pit bulls. The euthanasia rate in Kern County shelters remained stubbornly high and no one seemed to have a long-term plan to bring affordable spay/neuter services to our community. Finally, the Kellers decided enough was enough. Believing the only way Kern County will see reduced euthanasia rates is through affordable spay/neuter services, Critters Without Litters was developed as a permanent, high-volume spay/neuter clinic to meet the needs of the community. As a nonprofit organization, Critters Without Litters is able to subsidize the cost of sterilization through donations by business benefactors, the community, and grant support. As Larry says, We cannot build a big enough kennel to solve our pet overpopulation issue. Spaying and neutering is the solution. Fix the pet, help fix the problem. It s that simple. Impact Statement Spay/neuter is a crucial component to solving the complex problem of pet overpopulation in Kern County. In 2011, over 19,500 cats and dogs were killed in Kern County shelters. We believe directly addressing the issue through high-volume, low-cost spay and neuter services will result in a steep reduction in the number of companion animals entering our shelters. Fewer pets in our shelter system will allow more time and resources towards promoting positive outcomes for each animal in their care. Our philosophy is rooted in forming alliances with national and local nonprofits, local businesses and the community as a whole. Through collaboration, we seek to create a community where every pet has a home to call their own. 3

Needs Statement Critters Without Litters is a community organization and relies on the public to share the word about our clinic. Be sure to tell your family, friends and coworkers about us. Our continued growth depends on the involvement of the entire community. Donations help Critters Without Litters continue in our mission to serve the community. Contributions are a terrific way to celebrate a special occasion, support a cause that is close to your heart or to remember a beloved pet. As a 501(c)3 organization, all donations to Critters Without Litters are tax-deductible. Here are the items currently on our wish list. Donations of these items reduce our need to purchase them, allowing us to utilize more funds towards helping pets be spayed or neutered: 40 ft sea-train for storage Detergent pods (Tide/Kirkland) Distilled Water Paper Towels Bleach Copy Paper Towels Blankets Ziploc Bags (sandwich size) Antibacterial Hand Soap Waterless Hand Sanitizer Dish Soap Fabric Softener Dryer Sheets Oxy Clean Black Sharpie Pens CEO/Executive Director Statement Board Chair Statement Some people, when faced with situations they find untenable, throw their hands in the air and wonder when things might change. Others, like Joann Davies Keller and her husband, Larry, decide to take matters into their own hands. Seeing the seemingly unending number of Pit Bulls being euthanized in the local shelters, the Keller s, owners of Fortress Self Storage, decided to try and take matters into their own hands. They wanted to make a difference and believed the only solution to reduce the number of dogs euthanized at shelters and animal control facilities was through affordable spay/neuter programs. The first spay/neuter voucher was issued January 2010. Since then, 2,000 have been issued. Tired of having to explain to people that it was all we could afford to do to just help with Pit Bulls and mixes they decided to do more by opening the first low-cost spay/neuter clinic in Kern County. the clinic serves all-breeds of dogs and cats. The need for a low-cost clinic is great. Kern County Animal Control euthanizes at least 20,000 unwanted animals a year. This clinic will help reduce that number greatly. Budget $600,000.00 Category Animal-Related, General/Other Animal Protection & Welfare Population Served,, Short Term Success Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success An average of 400 animals are spayed or neutered monthly. This shows the need for a low-cost option, that has not been available until Critters Without Litters opened Oct 1, 2012. To dramatically reduce the number of unwanted animals enter our local shelters. This will also reduce the number euthanized. Success will be monitored by the reduction in the number animals euthanized at Kern County Animal Control. These numbers are monitored on a quarterly basis. Since Oct 1, 2012, more than 2,000 cats and dogs have been spayed or neutered. This has resulted in a minimum of 20,000 unwanted animals entering our shelters. 6
