A Word from the Judges... I would like to thank the members of the American Rottweiler Club for voting to select me to judge the ARC National Specialty. It was an absolute honor and I am very grateful. I would like to thank Bill Ward, Jill Kessler Miller, and the members of the Associated Rottweiler Fanciers of Northern California and the Golden State Rottweiler Club for hosting this event. I would also like to thank my ring stewards, Kathleen Soares and Janet Fletcher, for helping my ring run smoothly. Overall quality was very good although I saw several dogs that lacked proper forechest and shoulder angulation. Most of the dogs were presented well although a few fidgeted while having their mouths examined. While all of the dogs got through it, I do advise further training for those dogs that had difficulty with the mouth exam. I also noticed a few dogs with significant tartar on their teeth, so I recommend checking your dogs dental health and taking appropriate action if needed. I judged my 6-9 and 9-12 classes and found very nice dogs to win each of those classes. My 12-18 class had 17 dogs of which at least 6 made a really good first impression, so I was optimistic that I d have some good dogs from which to choose. Ultimately, my class winner was one of the dogs that really caught my eye at the initial impression. He didn t quite have the head I was looking for although it was better than average, but in my opinion, he has a nearly ideal body with correct proportion, angulation and balance; excellent topline and underline; excellent spring of ribs and width of chest yet with correct tight elbows; excellent bone and muscle; excellent side gait with strong reach and drive and firm topline; and a clean down and back. I then judged the comparatively smaller Amateur Owner Handler, Bred-By, American Bred and Open classes. I want to compliment both of my AOH handlers in that there was nothing amateur about their handling! My Open Dog class winner has correct structure, excellent bone and muscle, excellent topline and underline, correct angulation, and powerful side gait with strong reach and drive and firm topline. His markings are a bit light and large and he has some loose skin but wow, this dog had the best outand-back and side gait of the entire day, and looked great stacked every time I looked at him. I looked at every last detail on each dog for winners, and I awarded WD to the 12-18 dog and RWD to the Open Dog. When I watched the Best of Breed competition, I was pleased to see that my WD fit in with the male specials and I was pleased to see him selected as Best of Winners. I would also like to compliment the Veteran Dogs. All but one moved without any sign of age, and all seemed to enjoy being in the ring again. May they and their owners be blessed with many more good times ahead! To my stewards, thank you for doing such a great job keeping everything organized. To the officers and committee members, I had a pleasant stay and a nice experience. Thank you! In the Best of Breed competition, there was one clear standout. The bitch I chose as my BISS winner caught my attention the moment she entered the ring. She moved well, was in top condition and was very well presented. There were some very fine males in the Best of Breed ring, but the day belonged to the females. The class males were well represented as evidenced by my choice of Winners Dog as Best of Winners. My Winners Bitch represented the females well. As all exhibits do, she deviated from the standard; however, weighing the deviations of each animal equally against the full standard, I was pleased with my selection. Although people differ in their opinions on why the AKC conformation ring exists, it is clearly stated on their website under Getting Started in Conformation. Dog shows are intended to evaluate breeding stock. The dog s overall appearance and structure are an indication of that specimen s ability to produce quality puppies that also conform to the standard. The fact that spayed, neutered and mixed breed specimens are prohibited from the conformation ring also supports that these events are intended for the evaluation of breeding stock. The recent focus has been on the issue of the docked vs. natural tails. There is no stated fault, serious fault or disqualification for a natural tail. Further, the AKC has instructed judges to examine natural tailed exhibits. What happens next is at the discretion of the judge; however, the fact remains that the animal has been examined. It is my understanding that a number of ARC Members have chosen to breed to Rottweilers with natural tails, so the message cannot be that the natural tail renders them non-rottweilers. Further, it is clear from my experience that other parts of the standard are selectively overlooked or ignored even when there is a serious fault associated with it. The standard specifies The Rottweiler is to be exhibited in the natural condition with no trimming. There is a serious fault for any trimming that alters the length of the coat. Docking and trimming are things we do to our dogs that alter their natural state. Ironically, correct coat, or lack thereof, probably should carry more penalty than a natural tail because it is something we can breed to correct because there is a clear description of the correct Rottweiler coat, yet many of the animals in the ring had been thoroughly groomed, including trimming from whiskers to feathers and points in between. My take away message is that we need to step back and look at what we are doing to our breed, to our breeders and to our sport. I would urge everyone to go back and re-read the breed standard and give serious thought to why one line of the standard is the focus of attention when we are willing to overlook clear deviations from multiple other parts of our standard. While health clearances play an important role, mandatory practices are clearly not going to resolve these issues. Breeders need to be free to choose breeding stock from the broadest spectrum of animals possible, and they need to be realistic about the attributes and faults in their breeding stock. For me, a real concern is that there are imports with natural tails could likely be competitive in the ring, but there are so few people that can see past an appendage that every Rottweiler is born with. For the record, I prefer the docked tail; however, I also prefer a dark eye, dark mouth and strong, balanced front and rear assemblies. It was my opinion during this very special assignment that the animals selected for awards represent our breed well and offer great hope for the future. As ARC Treasurer for the past 4 years, Lin has done a great deal in maintaining our financial records in a professional manner and in getting the ARC into a good financial position. Dede Brownstein is our nominee for this award. Over the years, as well as in 2012, Dede has put numerous titles on her dogs in Conformation, Rally, Carting and Obedience, including an Obedience Master 2 on CH Qualicums Crownroyal Bryloukis UDX OM2 RE CI THD in September. She also has put in many hours of therapy work with her dogs. She has been an active ARC member by serving on both the Carting and Pet Therapy Committees and is an ARC Carting Judge. ARC Heroism & Good Samaritan Awards An American Rottweiler Club Heroism Award will be awarded to any Rottweiler that, in the opinion of the ARC Board of Directors, has performed an act of heroism. An American Rottweiler Club Good Samaritan Award will be awarded to any person who, in the opinion of the ARC Board of Directors, has aided and/or promoted an individual Rottweiler or our breed in some outstanding way. This year the Board has voted to award a Heroism Award to Rumor - Blackwood All About Eve And a Good Samaritan Award to her owner Lisa Medina 2012 Friend of The Rottweiler Award This award is for the person or group who has done the most for the Rottweiler breed in the United States in the past year (2012). Kelly M. Skiptunas is our nominee for the Friend of the Rottweiler Award. Kelly s dog Benny, AKC/CKC CH Oakview s Roughrider v Esmond RN, CI, TT, RTD, TDI, CGC, won the 2012 AKC Therapy ACE Award for more than 250 hours of therapy dog service, including visits to hospitals, schools and libraries, as well as TV appearances. As goodwill ambassadors for our breed, and by being the recipients of the ACE Award, we think Kelly and Benny have done a lot to improve the image of our breed. Skiptunas is the recipient of the 2012 Friend of The Rottweiler Award. 2011 Bruce Billings Good Sportsmanship Award The Bruce Billings Good Sportsman Award honors an ARC member who has shown outstanding sportsmanship in conformation, obedience, or any type of trial activities in the past year (2011. We nominate Sharon Marples for this award. Sharon has been an active participant in the Agility, Conformation, Obedience and Rally rings for many years including 2012, where her dogs earned titles in all these venues. In May 2012, a 15 year old girl was hit by a car and was in a coma in the Intensive Care Unit. After several days, Lisa and Rumor were asked to pay the girl a visit. Rumor sat on a chair with his paws on the bed. Lisa picked up the girl s hand and started to stroke Rumor s paw. She would do that for a while and then put the hand back down. After nearly an hour there had been no reaction. But when Lisa started to take Rumor s paws off the bed, the girl s clenched hand came up, shaking and reaching for Rumor! Everyone was so excited that Rumor had helped the girl come out of her coma. Anvil T.R.U.E. Awards This award in recognition of services performed outside the realm of competition. 2013 Kalyn Rae Bastyr Junior Scholarship Recipient James Patrick Noll & Stillwater Starsign James Essay I had a Rottweiler by my side since I was born. Always watching over me, always a playmate at the ready. My family had Rottweilers since the early 1970s and Labradors since 1992. When I was old enough to get an AKC junior handler number, I started showing the Labradors. 1 helped whelp and raise a Labrador litter of nine pups. A year later, when I was twelve, my family decided I needed a Rottweiler of my own and we met Chili (CH Cammcastle s Habanera Hattie). I spent six months with her at small shows and handling classes, getting her CGC and doing some rally classes. She finished her Championship at CRC with Holley Eldred handling her, then Chili and I won Best Junior the same day. A few weeks after that CRC, Paris (CH Cammcastle s Fleur de Lis, CGC) came home and I showed her for the next six months. It was hard sometimes in Junior Show when judges were afraid to examine her. Little did they know it was the toy dog next to us they should have been looking out for! I was told so many times by a judge that a Rottweiler isn t a Juniors dog, but I ignored them. I wasn t about to start showing a breed I had no interest in. Now I show in Juniors at the specialties or if I know a junior judge is also working breed judge. It s sad that my Junior showmanship career will be coming to an end in less than a year. I get to show all the dogs at the specialties, and even show in the Best of Breed ring. The professional handlers and experienced owners always take the time to help me, which I really appreciate. I still go to handling classes every week and hope to improve all the time. I took some handling seminars with George Alston and a Pat Trotter two day seminar on movement and structure. I also attended a two day seminar with Dr. Hutchison on breeding and puppy care and was lucky enough to spend some time with him and see his clinic. I helped breed and whelp Paris and Chili s litters. I got to see a Caesarian section, help wake the pups and start them on their first feeding. Eight puppies were a lot of work, but it was so much fun. A few didn t go to their homes until they were fifteen weeks old, so I had to housebreak and leash train some of them too. I got see them as Champions, only two years later, and I am very proud. I still have two to finish and I m trying to do that in the Bred by Exhibitor classes. When walking a Labrador, people always stop to pet them. When I have 32 2013 ARC National Specialty Supplement a Rottweiler, others typically cower, but I try to take the time so they will understand more that the Rottweiler is a friendly dog. When our local kennel club donated oxygen masks to the firehouses, I took Paris to demonstrate them and she was in the newspaper acting silly with a mask on, which was good for people to see. I suppose I will always have a Rottweiler to show, as long as there are shows to go to. I will probably only breed for the next generation to show, but never for pet sales or just to look like a big breeder. I wonder if people who do that truly have the commitment to take back every pup they produce at any time, and if they always have the time or room in their house to fulfill that commitment. The dogs have to live with me, never in the garage or in a kennel. I think Rottweiler owners have a big responsibility to keep the breed healthy and to show the public they are a true companion, not something to fear. I am sure when I am older, I will be involved in the Club, helping new members and especially the Juniors. Hopefully our breed will remain the loyal and good tempered breed I have grown up with and the club will have members that are loyal to the breed as well. The high school I go to, John Handley High, is a historic school here in Winchester, built in 1923. It is a public school that was privately endowed, so it s a really special place. Right now I am taking all advanced placement courses. Some have dual enrollment with the local college, so I will have 23 college credits when I graduate. The college courses are much harder, but then I can graduate college maybe in three years because the credits will transfer. I also am a member of The National Honor Society, the Varsity Golf and Tennis teams and the Academic Team. I was awarded the Handley Scholar award and the AP Award from the College Board. I plan on going to college maybe to be a veterinarian or an orthopedic veterinary surgeon. I have this year at high school to finish first, then it will be time to decide. While everybody loves to win at the shows, I believe that the priority is to make sure the dogs are having fun enjoying the quality time with their handlers, and remembering that this is a sport where good sportsmanship should be the main goal. I will continue to work towards this goal in the future, and be involved for the good of the breed.

Kramer) The ARC Top Twenty and Top 10 Dogs and Bitches Conformation Awards are based on the number of Rottweilers defeated through Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex wins at AKC licensed shows from January 1st through December 31st, as reported in the AKC Awards. The number defeated is calculated as follows: BOB Number of Rottweilers in competition, minus 1. BOS Number of Rottweilers in competition of the same sex, minus 1. AMERICAN ROTTWEILER CLUB ANNUAL PERFORMANCE STATISTICS In 2012, Rottweilers earned 1,451 AKC performance titles and 117 ARC Carting Titles. 2012 Top Ten Agility Awards The points for the ARC Top Ten Agility Awards (Standard & Jumpers With Weaves) are based on class placements and wins at AKC licensed trials from January 1st through December 31st, as reported in the AKC Rottweiler Award Reports. There are 6 levels of awards: Novice Standard; Open Standard; Excellent/Master Standard, Novice Jumpers with Weaves; Open Jumpers with Weaves; Excellent/Master Jumpers with Weaves, with Regular & Preferred classes being combined at each level. A dog must have a minimum of 10 points to be in the Final Top Ten. There are 3 levels of awards: Novice; Advanced; Excellent. A dog must have a minimum of 10 points to be in the Final Top Ten. The points are calculated as follows: PLACEMENT The dog must place in a class, then 1 point is counted for each dog defeated in the class, i.e. if a dog was 4th in an Advanced A class that had 23 entries, the dog would earn 19 points (23 total class entries minus 4 (1st, 2nd & 3rd place dogs & dog itself). Miscellaneous Titles In recent years, AKC has allowed certain titles to be added to a dog s tiles and pedigree. All of these titles must be applied for. The titles include: ARC Carting (retroactive to 1/1/00); Flyball - NAFA; Schutzhund DVG (retroactive to 1/1/91); Therapy Dog (retroactive to 1/1/00); Urban Search & Rescue (not sure how far back they are going).
