Congratulations for choosing a shelter pet as a new addition to your family! We are sure you will soon realize what a rewarding experience this will be for all those involved. There are a few things LAPS would like you to consider as you take your new pet home. 1. Please keep in mind that if you have any other pets at your home, they should be up to date on all their vaccinations prior to adopting. 2. As you take your new pet home, please remember that this is a big transition for both of you. Sometimes a new pet can become a little lethargic, and may not eat much right away. I f the animal does not eat or drink for more than 24 hours or has diarrhea, vomiting, coughing, nasal discharge or ocular, it needs to see a veterinarian. 3. LAPS feed the animals foods that are donated, so they receive variety of different foods, which may cause diarrhea. Any changes in diet can cause intestinal upsets resulting in diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. 4. It is important to remember that your new pet should NOT be exposed to any other animals until it is fully vaccinated. Your pet is virtually unprotected from local viruses. It is important to keep it away from animals that may not have vaccinations, and public places where viruses and parasites could be rampant. Small puppies or kittens should not be left outside. Please consult your veterinarian for advice. 5. Pet proof your home. Make sure dangerous materials are out of reach of the pet. If you have any questions and or concerns please do not hesitate to call LAPS. For a list of city ordinances in regards to pets please contact City Animal Control (956)795-4902. www.facebook.com/lapsadopt Page 1 of 5

Things to Consider Before Adopting Your choice in adopting a pet rather than shopping for one is a stepping stone towards a non-kill nation. Laredo Animal Protective Society (LAPS) will always be very appreciative those who choose to adopt instead of shop. Adopting is very rewarding experience to all that are involved. Before taking responsibility for any living creature, please consider the following: Do you have plenty of space? Are you financially stable? Pets are very expensive; food, grooming, shots, heart-worm and flea/tick preventives are just a few necessities. Do you or anyone in your family suffer from allergies? Time and time again Pets have been dropped off at the shelter because someone becomes allergic to them. Do you have plenty of time? Many pets are dropped off at the shelter because they do not have any time to care for their unwanted family member. Do your current pets get along with other animals? Please understand LAPS always attempts to best socialize each animal as much as possible, however sometimes it is not enough. Some animals will become stressed out at a shelter environment. So please as you get your pet home and in its new environment, be patient it may take a few days, weeks or even months to return to a normal pet behavior routine. The Laredo Animal Protective Society will always try to assist you and your new pet. Adoption Fees will vary. Please contact LAPS staff member to assist you with what the price is for each pet. Each Pet will include the following: spay/neuter and current vaccinations. Page 2 of 5 Approved by the Board of Directors January 03, 2013
