GROUP AUDITION (for Main Ensemble) Whether it s your first show or thirty-first show, most children thrive taking part in the chorus as they get all the best songs and none of the pressure of learning lines. It s always great fun with lots of camaraderie. A large chorus is needed for Seussical to perform the big songs as well as background acting. If you don t want a speaking role, but want to perform, sing and dance, this is the option for you. All you need to do is learn this section of the song (lyrics below) and take part in a fun fifteen minute drama workshop with a small group of other children on the day. Please indicate ensemble on your audition form. SONG FOR GROUP AUDITION: Bare Necessities from The Jungle Book Look for the bare necessities The simple bare necessities Forget about your worries and your strife I mean the bare necessities Old Mother Nature's recipes That brings the bare necessities of life Wherever I wander, wherever I roam I couldn't be fonder of my big home The bees are buzzin' in the trees To make some honey just for me When you look under the rocks and plants And take a glance at them fancy ants And then maybe, well, try a few The bare necessities of life will come to you Looking for the bare necessities The simple bare necessities Forget about your worries and your strife I mean the bare necessities That's why a bear can rest at ease With just the bare necessities of life 1

SOLO AUDITIONS (for Speaking Parts) SOME CHARACTERS IN THE SHOW The Cat In The Hat (M or F): The Cat In The Hat is the essence of mischief, fun, and imagination. The Cat stirs things up, causes trouble, but always sets things right again, helping Jojo to discover the power of his own imagination as they create the story for the show together. Jojo (M or F): Jojo is a "Thinker", a smart child with a wild imagination. He can be played as being a little bit awkward, a little bit of a loner, or simply a rambunctious kid whose Thinks get him into constant trouble. By the end of the show, he learns what it means to be a responsible member of his world, using the power and possibilities of his own Thinks. Horton The Elephant (M or F): Horton The Elephant is a gentle giant. Think of him as a big-hearted bluecollar guy who is steadfast, responsible and always tries to do the right thing for his friends. He is imaginative and receptive to the world around him. He is very unselfconscious. Horton's view of the world never changes - he believes in its goodness. By the end of the show, without even realizing it, he is ready to become a parent. Gertrude Mcfuzz (F): Gertrude Mcfuzz is very self-conscious and aware that her one-feather tail isn't perfect. Gertrude changes during the show from a neurotic, nervous and shy bird into one with the power to protect. Mayzie La Bird (F): Mayzie La Bird is self-centered, selfish, and vain. Mayzie will never admit to her own flaws. She manipulates anyone she can into doing what she wants. But Mayzie isn't all bad. In giving up her egg to Horton once and for all, she has a moment of generosity-she realizes she isn't the kind of person who would be a good parent, and she does the best thing she can for the egg. Sour Kangaroo (F): Sour Kangaroo isn't really sour at all. She's just got a lot of attitude. She's loud, brassy, and a lot of fun. The Wickersham Brothers (M/F): The Wickersham Brothers are not bad guys! They're simply a lot like kids who tease, play pranks, and get a kick out of making mischief, although often at others' expense. They enjoy hanging around with one another, making music together on the street corner, and playing off one another The Whos / Mr and Mrs Mayor: The Whos are a lot like you and me, only so small as to be invisible. Mr. and Mrs. Mayor are Whos who are parents trying hard to raise a difficult child in a difficult world. They may get aggravated with Jojo, but they love him dearly and try to do the right thing, even if it turns out to be a mistake. 2

SONG FOR SOLO AUDITION: Own Choice SCRIPTS FOR SOLO AUDITIONS: Please pick 1 or 2 THE CAT Script 1: The Cat In The Hat (1) THE CAT appears wearing a stethoscope (as Doctor Drake) Tut tut, the Doctor said Such talk! It s too absurd! Your tail is just right for your kind of bird! (pause) All right already! Bring in the Pill-berry bush! (2) THE CAT appears as Auctioneer Good evening ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Seusseby s. Our first item up to bid this evening is lot 39, a pendulous pachyderm on egg, nest and tree. The bidding will begin at ten thousand dollars. Do I hear ten thousand? Going once, going twice and (bangs his gavel) Sold! To the man with the sideburns and the greasy black moustache oh, excuse me, Madam! Sold instead to the man from the circus! 3

Script 2: Jojo and Horton (you may pick either) Hello hello? (casually to his clover) Hello? Who s there? It s me, Jojo, the Mayor s son. I m Horton. The elephant. Are you real, or are you just a very large Think? Oh, I m real alright. I would state that in ink. In my Thinks, I imagine a lot of strange things, and I go to strange places, as if I had wings! I love a good Think! Well for me that goes double. Sometimes my Thinks are what get me in trouble. When you think, do you dream? In bright colours! Me, too. And I go to strange places. Like Solla Sollew! When you think, do you think you could fly to the stars? Little friend, no-one else could have Thinks such as ours! 4

Script 3: Gertrude McFuzz (1) GERTRUDE: I ll bet you forgot about Gertrude McFuzz Well, that s nothing new. I mean, everyone does. But Gertrude did something that few birds could do What? Who is it? GERTRUDE: It s me! Gertrude! Horton! Oh, Horton! I was so worried! Are you all right? Gertrude! How did you find us? GERTRUDE: Well, it s a long story (2) GERTRUDE: Horton, I bought you a scarf Thank you, Gertrude. Have you heard from Mayzie? GERTRUDE: She sent a card from Palm Beach Palm Beach! Gertrude, what if she never comes back! GERTRUDE: Don t worry, she will. Um Horton, notice anything different? Yes, it s g-g-getting colder. 5

Script 4: Mayzie La Bird (1) MAYZIE: MAYZIE: MAYZIE: It's hopeless. (A voice is heard over Horton's head.) You said it, kid. Who's there? It's me. Mayzie. Up here. Mayzie Are you on a nest? Yeah. You wanna make something of it? No, I just never thought I'd see you on a nest. MAYZIE: Neither did I, Hort. Neither did I. (2) MAYZIE I won't be gone long, kid. I give you my word. I'll hurry right back, 'cause I'm that sort of bird! Oh, Horton, I promise! I'll fly back real soon. I'd only be gone for, say, one afternoon! 6
