Wizard of Oz Part One Scene Two We re Not In Kansas Anymore (wakes up, holding head, looking around, seems confused) Toto, where are we? What s happened?! I have a feeling we re not in Kansas anymore! We must be Over the Rainbow! (continues to look around; is offstage and comes in slowly with a light on her) (to Toto) Now I know we re not in Kansas anymore! ( comes up to with a smiling face; approaches her with apprehension) Are you a good witch or a bad witch? (looks around he) Me? Why, I m not a witch at all! I m from Kansas! (points to Toto) Oh! Well, is that the witch? (looks like she s confused) Toto? No this is my dog, Toto. Well, I m confused! The Munchkins called me because they said a new witch has just dropped a house on the wicked witch of the east. And there s the house, and here you are, and that s what s left of the wicked witch of the east! (points her wand at feet sticking under the house. (gasping, puts her hand over her mouth) 1

And so, the Munchkins want to know if you are the good witch or the bad witch?! (Munchkins are hiding behind flowers) But I would never want to be a witch! es are mean and ugly! (Munchkins start giggling) What was that? The Munchkins! They are laughing because, you see, I am a witch! (looks up and down) You are? Oh, I m so sorry! But I ve never heard of a beau>ful, kind witch before! I am, the good witch of the north! And the Munchkins are happy because you freed them from the wicked witch of the east! Oh my! What are Munchkins? Munchkins are little people who live in this land, and you are their hero, my dear! (looks around and says to the Munchkins) It s all right, you can come out now! SONG: Munchkin Musical Sequence (screams/cackles and appears) (frightened, looking at ) I thought you said she was dead! That was her sister, the wicked witch of the east! This is the wicked witch of the west, and she is worse than the other one was! 2

(walks over to ) Who killed my sister? Who killed the witch of the east? Was it you? Answer me! Leave her alone! So, it was you, was it? You killed her! No, no, it was an accident! I didn t mean to kill anybody! Really, I didn t! Oh, you didn t mean it, eh? An accident, eh? Well, my little pretty, I can cause accidents, too! And this is how I do it! (she acts as if she is going to harm ) (Interrupting) Aren t you forgetting the ruby slippers? The slippers, yes, the slippers! (walking over to the house, looks down then turns to and ) The slippers are gone! Give them back to me or I ll (as witch is looking for slippers, a Munchkin gets the slippers and gives them to who puts them on) It s too late! There they are! (points to s feet where the slippers are already on) (tries to be charming) Please, give, me, the shoes!( backs away slowly from her) I m the only one who knows how to use them! Give them to me, now! (lunges for them) Give them back! 3

(To ) Keep right inside of them. Their magic must be very powerful or she wouldn t want them so badly! Stay out of this! Or I ll fix you as well! Oh, rubbish, you have no power here! Be gone before a house falls on you! ( looks around to make sure that isn t happening) Very well, I ll be gone for now! (to ) But you d better stay out of my way! (to ) And you I ll get you, my little pretty, and your little dog, too! ( laughs and chokes a little make this a little humorous maybe she forgets her broomstick and has to come back to grab it, looks at audience and rolls her eyes) (during this time, the Munchkins are on stage but have hidden or are cowering in fear) (to Munchkins) It s alright she has gone! Come out friends! (to ) I m afraid you ve made a bad enemy of the witch! The sooner you get out of this land, the safer you will be, my dear! I would give anything to get home right now! But, which is the way back to Kansas? (looks around unsure) The only person who might know, my dear, would be the great, wonderful Wizard of Oz himself! 4

A wizard!? What kind of wizard? Oh, a very good, but a very mysterious wizard! He lives in the Emerald City. That s a long way from here. Did you bring your broomstick with you? Broomstick? Why, I don t have a broomstick Well, then you will have to walk But which way do I go to get to the Emerald City? It s always best to start at the beginning, my dear. (she waves her wand and highlights the yellow brick road) (sees the road, startled and amazed) Oh my! The Munchkins will see you safely to the border of Munchkinland! But what happens if the witch comes back and Remember to never let those ruby slippers off your feet! Now, just follow the yellow brick road! SONG: Follow the Yellow Brick Road SONG: (They re) Off to See the Wizard! SCENE ENDS 5
