2015 September NEWSLETTER

Message from the Get ready everyone, we are headed back to Coyote Creek Retrievers for the clubs 7 th and final event. The board members decided it would be a great way to finish the season. Thanks in advance to the Fulk s family for hosting again. Congratulations to everyone that placed a dog during the superbowl events. Retrievers and pointers had to deal with extremely hot conditions. Thanks to all the members that braved the heat and kept the competition going smoothly. Special thanks to Steve Skipworth and Steve Arms for judging the pointer competition and Stan Zorn for the retriever side and Mindy Shank for keeping track of points. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the members that have made my term as president a true pleasure. I would like the fellow members to know we are lucky to have such a dedicated core of working trainers, judges and board members. I for one had no idea how much work was going on behind the scene. See you all at Coyote Creek for the last event on September 20 th. Start time will be 7:30. The club will provide drinks and sandwiches but bring a side dish to share.

September Team Shoot We had so much fun we are doing it again! Turn right on Territorial go about 4 miles and destination will be on the left. From Beltline: W. 11 th to Greenhill Road. Turn left. Greenhill to Crow Road. Stay on Crow Road until it intersects with Territorial (about 8 miles). Left on Territorial about 5 miles to your destination on the right. The team shoot will NOT be in the small field where regular braces are held. It will be in the larger field that is closer to the road, so watch for the GVHRC sign. The club will provide drinks and a deli sandwich; bring a side dish or dessert to share. We will be offering the jackpot! 3 winners will be drawn. Must be present to win. & Will have kids braces again. Carmen and Mindy our last team shoot winners!

September 20th Team Shoot This is a Club Hunt Day, Potluck and Prize Event We will be hunting Quail. Optional $ 5.00 JACKPOT One raffle ticket for signing up and an extra raffle ticket for each marked bird taken. Jackpot will be split 1 st 50% 2 nd 30% 3 rd 20% The team shoot is a friendly hunting day scenario. It is scored and prizes are offered to the top 3 teams. 12 minute braces are ran for each team. Teams are chosen randomly by drawing names from a hat that have registered for the event. Pointers and Retrievers may work together. Each team with dogs will hunt quail a 12 minute (brace). 5 birds are placed in the field for the 1 st brace with 3 additional birds placed for each brace thereafter. You may shoot for yourself or have a gunner. You must have a current hunting license if you are shooting. You may only carry 3 shells into the field. Scoring is as follows: 20 points per bird shot and retrieved. It is ok if dog scoops the bird without a shot being fired. It still counts as 1 shot. 1 point for each ½ minute not used. 3 pts for each shell not used. (3 shells allowed per team member). Shooting or retrieving 5 birds is a disqualification. A team member who shoots 4 birds without getting a shell from the other handler is disqualified. An attempt to flush must be made by the pointing dogs. To stop the clock; you need to yell time when 4 birds total have been taken. Scoring Examples: 1. A Team shoots 3 birds in 12 minutes and uses 5 shells. The score would be as follows: 20pts/bird 3x20 = 60 points 3 pts/shell not used 1x3 = 3 No points for time. Total Points: 63 2. 4 Birds shot using 4 shells in 6 minutes: 80 pts for birds 6 points for shell not used 12 pts for 6 minutes left over = 98 pts Heckling is allowed and encouraged! breed PROFILE Boykin Spaniel Boykin Spaniels are a true sporting dog for all seasons. A classic spaniel: friendly, eager, trainable, and lovable. They are 104 th most popular breed. Dog: Height - 15 1/2" to 18" Weight - 30 to 40 lbs. Bitch: Height - 14" to 16 1/2" Weight - 25 to 35 lbs.the Boykin Spaniel is medium in size, with emphasis placed on his hunting abilities, characterized by flushing and retrieving, with moderate speed and agility. His pendulous ears, intelligent expression, sturdy build and friendly wagging tail proclaim him part of the spaniel family. The color is a solid, rich liver (reddish brown) or dark chocolate allowing for a small, white spot on the chest. No other white markings are allowed. Being intelligent and possessing a great desire to please make the Boykin easy to train. He is a strong swimmer, taking to water easily and is valuable for water retrieving as well as field retrieving. The Boykin has the stamina to stay by its owner s side during a full day of work, so it fits in best with an active family. The breed also thrives on companionship, enjoying the company of children and other dogs. Its coat requires only minimal maintenance beyond a weekly brushing and occasional bathing. As a pet and companion he is exceptional with an amicable disposition. The Boykin Spaniel was first bred by South Carolina hunters during the 1900's to provide the ideal dog for hunting ducks and wild turkeys in the Wateree River Swamp. Hunters on South Carolina's Wateree River needed a small rugged dog compactly built for boat travel and able to retrieve on land and water.for years Boykins were known only to hunters of Carolina waterfowl and wild turkey. Sportsmen working the swampy terrain of the South were always enamored of the breed s intensity and versatility. But lately the wider world has discovered that the breed is as delightful at home as it is tenacious at the lake. They are very, very sweet dogs to have around the family, a longtime owner says, but an absolute tiger in the field. Clean your Boykin s ears regularly especially after working in the water, swimming and after bathing. All dogs are predisposed to certain health abnormalities due to genetics inherited from its canine ancestors. Boykin Spaniels are no exception. However, conscientious breeders of Boykin Spaniels are intent on improving the health of the breed and furthering its hunting instincts. Please check with your vet and your breeder about testing and appropriate health clearances of the Boykin Spaniel s most common health problems which include hip dysplasia, juvenile cataracts and the most recently discovered EIC (Exercise Induced Collapse).
