CH. MAR-DE'S DARK FELICIA Owned by ED and SUE FITZWILLIAM Pictured winning GROUP Fl RST, Dec. l 6, l 967, at the Richland County K. C. Handled by JACK FUNK The beautiful jet-black Scottish Terrier pictured on this month's cover d epicts the profile of CH. MAR DE'S DARK FELICIA. This California-born Scottie is the most recent recipient of the Scottish Terrier Club of America's Francis C. Lloyd Memorial Challenge Cup. To qualify for this award, "Filly" attained the most Best of Breeds during the 1967 show season based on the AKC championship point schedule. She was capably handled during the past year by Lena Kardos on the West Coast and by Jack Funk in the Midwest and East. "Filly" is a unique combination of two outstanding bloodlines. Her sire, Ch. Anstamm Dark Venture, won the Lloyd Memorial Trophy in 1964. Her dam, Reanda Dalblane Moon Dream, was imported by Margaret Watt from the Reanda Kennels. Although not shown in 1968, "Filly" has been busy with her litter of nine puppies, whelped February 2nd. Bred to still another Lloyd Trophy winner, Ch. Bardene Bobby Dazzler, she is presently being conditioned for a trip to Canada later this year. Only three years old, Ch. Mar-De's Dark Felicia has a bright and promising future a head. Watch for "Filly" and her puppies this fall. Inquiries concerning h er beautiful litter will be answered promptly, as we are particularly interested in placing these youngsters with breed er-exhibitors. Eng. Am. Can. Ch. Bardene Boy Blue Ch. FRAN CAZIER INTERVIEWS MR. and MRS. CHARLES ST ALTER The INTERVIEW which follows was prepared just one month before the untimely death of Mr. Stalter, on March 19th. Mrs. S'talter, who will carry on the breeding program at Barberry Knowe, wished that the article be published, and we present it now as a tribute to a fine gentleman... one who has given a great deal to the sport of dogs, and one who will be greatly missed by us all. Breeder, exhibitor, member of several kennel clubs (president of at least one), member and Past-President of the Scottish Terrier Club of America besides membership in two other parent breed clubs, President of the Associated Terrier Clubs of New York, and judge; Charles C. Stalter is all these things and more to the dog fancy. The record as breeder-exhibitors of Charles Stalter and his wife Helen speaks for itself. They have finished 70 Scottish Terrier Champions, 57 of them home-bred; 7 Sealyham Champions, 2 home-breds; and 24 Dachshund Champions, of which 16 were their breeding - for a total of 101 champions. His dedication and hard work for breed and kennel clubs is attested to by the numerous offices he has held in them. His judging record includes assignments at Westminster and quite a number of STCA specialties across the country. The biggest honor of all was when he was asked to judge the Scottish Terrier Club of England at Ascot in 1964. When I asked why he had stayed so long and worked so hard in dogs, he told me, "We've been blessed with marvelous stock, and we've done so much winning. First, it's 4 luck, then a good dog, then a good jockey. You're lucky to have a good handler. We love it... it's a marvelous hobby." As to all the time and effort for the clubs, "Somebody has to do the work. There are only a few in each club that do all the work. I help financially, too." Barberry Knowe, as the Stalters have named their New Jersey home, is probably one of the last of the big kennels in the United States. 75 to 80 dogs are kept there, the majority of them being pensioners. There are 18 large fenced runs and six covered runs. The two big indoor runs with drains and cedar shavings are used for exercising dogs in bad weather. There is a separate house and runs for bitches in whelp and a large house and five runs for puppies. Barbara Kingsbury is Kennel Manager. She supervises kennel work, does all breeding and whelping, and conditions and trains young stock. Teenagers are hired to walk the puppies and adult dogs. The show dogs are conditioned by John Murphy, the Stalter's handler. The kennel is under constant supervision by two veterinarians. Mr. Stalter told me, "We've been lucky, we've only had awfully sick dogs once, and that

J was 25 years ago. It was something w e got from the Garden, and we lost one or two." The Stalters bought their first Scottish Terrier in 1929. They finished their first Scottie in 1932, under Alva Rosenburg at the Washington KC show. Most of the long string of champions that followed were bred at Barberry Knowe, but even those that weren't w ere personally selected by Mr. and Mrs. Stalter. "No one has ever bought dogs for us," he told me, "we buy our own. Mr. Singleton is the only one who ever sold us dogs sight unseen." One of their early thrills in dogs was when Ch. Heather Glory went BIS a t Boston in 1938 and Mr. Stalter reminisced about it. "It was the first time a Scottie had won the Boston show. There were over 1850 dogs, and she was shown by Phil Prentice, who handled for us for over twenty years, and the judge was the great George Thomas. An amusing incident occured with the same bitch. She was in the classes at the Tuxedo show, and went fourth in a class of four. The next weekend, at Somerset Hills, the president of the club was the judge who had given her fourth the week before, and he had to present her with the BIS trophy- from the classes!" Before continuing further, it seems to me necessary to mention the Stalter's handler, John Murphy. He has been with them since 1960, and has had, as said before, the principal responsibility, not only for conditioning Barberry Knowe show Scotties, but for presenting them in the show ring. To quote Mr. Stalter, "He's marvelous with dogs. They all adore him. Johnny Murphy - the map of Ireland a ll over his face, with a Scottish accent." I think the Stalter attitude toward dogs and people involved a question I asked at Westminster this year when this interview took place. I had heard rumors all over the Garden that Ch. Charmichael's Fanfare JOHNNY MURPHY and "MAMIE" had been sold. When I asked them about the truth of the rumor, they laughed. Said Mr. Stalter, "No money in the world could buy her, and if she were sold, Johnnie would have to go along, too." Statistics alone could never convey what "Mamie," as Fanfare is called, means to the Stalters. Nonetheless, the statistics are most impressive. Mamie was 17 months old when she became an AKC Champion. On that particular day she took Group 1 under Louis Murr at Rock Creek KC, handled by her breeder, Mrs. Ruth Johnson. She was two and one-ha lf years old when the S t alters bought her through John Murphy. She was three months short of being five years old when she took Best In Show at the Westminster Kennel Club in 1965. Her record includes 32 BIS's, 61 Group Firsts, 92 Best of Breeds, and six Specialties. Mr. Stalter continued, "She just likes to be with Johnnie. Johnnie's wife says, 'If you listen on the intercom in the morning to what is going on in the kennel, you'd think he had a blond out there.' She is with (Continued on Page 24) 5

INTERVIEW-Continued from Page 5 Johnnie all day while he does his w ork. She owns the kennel." W hen I spoke to John Murphy a bout her, he said, "Mamie and I have something between us. She wants to be with me, and that's about the size of it. We get along together somehow. It's hard to describe. I was looking for something like her all my life, and I guess she was too. I put her w here she could see me all the time. She loved to go for w alks a nd was happy just to be on a lead. She's in great sha pe - better today than when she won the Garden. A tremendous b ody on her. She's groomed the same as the show dogs. I doubt if sh e'll ever b e shown a g ain in competition, even in Vetera ns. But at W estchester every ten years they ha ve a spe cial tribute to all the dogs that ha ve w on a BIS, and I think it's about tha t time now. So, ma ybe w e 'll parade her for tha t one." And back to the Stalters, "There is no question about it, Mamie was our greatest dog. Great showmanship, coat and conformation. She never let down for Johnnie. She had the power of relaxation. She'd sleep for two days if there was nothing to do. She was unusual in this respect. She was sa ving her strength. She was a great one. She wouldn't start a fight, but she w ouldn't back up, either. She's going to be one of the great producers, too. She has 4 champions already, and more on the way. It's very unusual for a show bitch to produce such fine champions in such a short time. "The second greates t dog w e had was Bobbie, Eng. and Am. Ch. W alsing Wild Winter of Barberry Knowe. He w a s a dog that couldn't stand hea t, and many times n ever got to the group because of the hea t. "And the dog always came first." CH. BARBERRY KNOWE BINGO Mostly...
