For some of us it was not too long ago and for others it was a little longer. Back then, we were children with a passion, love and compassion for animals. We were growing up having special friendships with dogs, cats and other creatures and exploring the wonders of animal science. Some of us were lucky to have mentors and guidance and some did not. But, for the most, we all pursued a childhood dream and became veterinarians. So now, let me ask you: "Are you mentoring a young aspiring veterinarian? Are you open and responsive to youth expressing interest in veterinary medicine? Are you involved in your community (schools, clubs) educating parents and children about what we do and veterinary career opportunities? Do you believe that the future veterinarians should be mentored by the present veterinarians and develop a professional vision? I have been involved in several schools and groups (helping with their pets, participating in career days, internship/shadowing programs and more) and I admit it is a very rewarding. Several of theses kids are in veterinary school and others are on their way. I keep an open door policy: No child interested in veterinary medicine is left outside. And, I have good news. We have been invited by the AVMA to participate in Science Chicago. This is an exciting program run by the Museum of Science and Industry aimed at educating the public about the world of science and its value in our lives. Although we are joining at the tail end of the program, I was informed that the website http://www.sciencechicago.com/ will remain active for a while. This is an unprecedented opportunity to expand our public education activities as part of a wide Chicagoland community project. Other community schools have programs or are interested in our collaboration. If you would like to help, please contact the public education committee or the office. STATUS OF CHICAGO S PROPOSED MANDATORY SPAY/NEUTER ORDINANCE Presently there appears to be a lull in the storm. MSN was not scheduled to be on the agendum at yesterday s co-meeting of the aldermanic Finance and License Committees (Burke and Schulter). Alderman Burke s aid, Matt Link, says that there are currently other more pressing issues than MSN. Now is not the time for us to relax we know that the MSN supporters have not gone away. PIT BULL BAN CONSIDERED IN HIGHLAND PARK? There has been a quick, knee jerk reaction. Mayor Belsky called for a pit bull ban three days after a 14- year-old girl was bitten. In Chicago Breaking News, Belsky said, These are mercurial dogs, they are unpredictable and they are lethal. Legislative Updates David Saidel, DVM Legislative Chairman The Pioneer Press (May 7, 2009) printed: Defenders of pit bull terriers argue that the problem isn t the breed, but rather the owner. Belsky said that while he understands that argument, the locking mechanism on a pit bull s jaw makes the breed uniquely dangerous. After reading Mayor Belsky s myth-guided statements, I called the City of Highland Park to find out when BSL would next be discussed at a city council meeting. The city manager s office took my E-mail address and promised to keep me apprised of the meeting topics. It looks like we can do a just service by attending the Highland Park City Council Meetings and help to educate the law makers. Page 5

Seeing Things Your Way with Imaging Services Herb Whiteley, Dean, University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine Service that benefits the patient and the veterinary practitioner is a hallmark of the imaging department at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana. Recent developments include a novel approach to imaging cats when respiratory problems make anesthesia risky and a new outpatient imaging service that quickly puts results in veterinarians hands. First, an update on the new outpatient service: Outpatient imaging is increasingly available in human medicine. Since April, our hospital has been offering outpatient CT, MRI and ultrasound examinations. Here s how it works: 1. Your clinic provides the pre-examination blood work and patient history. 2. You counsel your client in advance about what to expect, including the risks of the procedure. (We provide client instruction sheets to assist you.) 3. Your client pays us only for the imaging service, and the animal does not become a patient of our hospital. 4. The final report is sent to you within 24 hours, and your client sees you for results and further treatment. You can schedule your patient for outpatient imaging at (217) 333-1800. Now about the ingenious device developed by Dr. Bob O Brien to safely image cats with respiratory issues that make anesthesia problematic: Dr. O Brien calls the invention a Better Mousetrap, but it looks more like a low-tech display case. Essentially, it s a clear Plexiglas tube that s just about the size of a large cat. Cats for whom anesthesia would be risky, such as those in respiratory distress, are placed inside and imaged with little or no sedation or additional restraint. Notches and holes in the tube allow for catheter access and oxygen therapy to flow through the tube. The prototype Mousetrap has been used successfully with many feline as well as small canine patients. We are pursuing a patent on the idea, which could greatly improve the ability to diagnose difficult emergency cases and other tricky situations when it comes to cats. Animal hospice is a system for providing comfort care to animals who are near the end of their life. Companion animal hospice has two goals. The first is to minimize unnecessary suffering for the animal; this is accomplished as the human family members and veterinary team provide compassionate medical and nursing care for the pet. The second goal is to minimize the family's suffering. The veterinary team and other caregivers support the family in the bereavement process, helping to bring grief to a meaningful resolution. The need for animal hospice services has been growing. The International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care, found at www.iaahpc.org is a new organization aspiring to educate the public about companion animal hospice, to develop recommendations for standards of care and to promote research and future recognition of animal hospice as a distinct healthcare field. What can the primary care team do? A) Discuss Hospice Care as an integral part of the practice's Geriatric Protocol To help clients prepare for a time when their animal is suffering from a life-limiting condition, include the topic as part of the practice's geriatric care client education. Acknowledge the tough choice clients may have to make between ever intensifying medical treatment, hospice care or euthanasia. B) Make a Hospice Plan A hospice plan must take into consideration the patient's diagnosis, prognosis and available treatment options. It must also take into consideration the patient's attitude and the family's values, beliefs and resources. There are three components to the plan: Medical care: recognizing pain and other symptoms, administering medications, anticipating complications and side effects. Nursing care: techniques and equipment to increase patient comfort. Support for the family: showing empathy, providing information and otherwise helping the family cope. What is Animal Hospice? Chronic renal disease in cats and degenerative joint disease in dogs are examples of common conditions requiring long-term palliative care that often transitions into hospice care. To optimally serve hospice patients and their families' needs the veterinary team may need to: assess and treat based on how the patient feels. aggressively treat symptoms/secondary problems. communicate empathically. train family members to perform medical or nursing care at home. train family members to assess/monitor quality of life. provide in-home medical and nursing services. provide 24/7 accessibility for patients who are actively dying or are in need of euthanasia. offer information about normal and complicated grief. recognize grief and respond compassionately. help families prepare for the loss by addressing in advance questions like: Where will the patient be during his or her last moments? Who will be present? Will the pet's body be cremated or buried? Benefits of offering hospice The veterinary practice should determine at what level it is prepared to offer the services which may be needed by hospice patients and their families. An animal hospice professional can provide training to equip the primary care team members with the skills needed and accept referrals when the patients' needs exceed the practice's mission and scope. Hospice requires time and commitment from everyone involved. However, it can be a personally and financially rewarding experience, building a special bond between clients, patients, the veterinary team members and the veterinary practice. Hot Topics in Animal Law, Continuing Legal Education Program Presented by the Illinois State Bar Association Animal Law Section The Illinois State Bar Association will be hosting this Continuing Education program in Chicago on June 4 th and in Grafton, IL on June 12 th. The Chicago Program will cover: animal law legislation and its process, pet custody and pet trusts in Illinois, dangerous dog ordinances, and ethical issues. The Grafton Program will cover: an update on equestrian laws/regulations, livestock management, Strategic Law Against Public Participation suits, proposed changes to animal cruelty laws, public safety laws, laws regulating reckless owners and potentially dangerous dogs, regulatory issues regarding animals as part of the food chain, and ethical issues. February 2009 CVMA Executive Board Meeting Minutes Summary Discussed Lesley Grendahl, she will lead strategic planning meeting scheduled for Sunday April 19 th : 8:30a breakfast, 9a-5p, CVMA office. Motion Made, Seconded and Passed to have the meeting on this date. Trying to come up with more value for the membership: AAA- will solicit twice a year through mailings, 15% discount for membership. Motion Made, Seconded and Passed to sign a contract with AAA. Report of the Secretary: Dr. Newman read minutes from previous meeting. Motion Made, Seconded, and Passed for approval of the Jan. Board meeting minutes. COMMITTEE REPORTS Legislative: Dr. Saidel reported. Contacted 7 legislators about Bill 198 only got 2 responses. Communicated with Rep. Karen May. MSN before joint committee in Chicago on March 12 th and city council the week after. Recommend renew efforts to Alderman. Membership: Dr. Cutright reported. The following veterinarian was presented for membership into assoc: Dr. Christine Peterson. Motion Made, Seconded, and Passed to approve this member for the association to be presented at the March general meeting. Life Membership: Dr. Ron Kipnis, joined 1970. Motion Made, Seconded, and Passed to approve as a life member. Bulletin: Rich Susralski reported. Introduced Dr. Glen Romney - Bulletin Committee Chair. Animal Welfare: Dr. Nir introduced Dr. Amir Shanan as Committee Chair. Dr. Lori Civello will be Board liaison for committee. ISVMA Representatives: Drs. Arndt/Marks reported. Many state legislature updates: HSUS revised breeder law, legislation for taxing veterinary services is coming to Illinois (proposed 10% tax), supporting bovine tail docking, currently opposing tail and ear docking due to how bills are written, supporting veterinary repayment act). HSUS now has two full time lobbyists in Springfield. March 2009 General Meeting Minutes Summary Report of the Secretary: Dr. Newman was absent. Danielle Rothe reported. The January meeting minutes were read and presented for approval. Motion Made, Seconded and Passed to accept the meeting minutes as read. COMMITTEE REPORTS Membership: Dr. Alvi read the names of eligible members: Drs. Ingrid Manhart, Euan Morrison, Katherine (Katie) Marie Schreurs, Chris Triola, Rosemarie Niznik, Kim Marie Labak, Timothy S. England, Carol Homann, Edward Holub, Jill M. Keller, James Murnighan, Ashley Rossman, Tracy Goode, Erica Periman, Rick Otto, Alfred LiVicchi, Thomas Favale, Jr., Mary Priebe, Jacob Cohen, Sandra Durst and Christie Peterson. Motion Made, Seconded and Passed to accept these doctors into the membership of the Association. Bylaws: Dr. Nir read a summary of the bylaws changes to the membership. Motion Made, Seconded and Passed to accept these bylaws changes. Legislative: Drs. David Saidel and Shannon Greeley reported on the status of the MSN proposal. Dr. Greeley explained that the aldermen have never reached out to the CVMA. We have maintained that there is obvious conflict between MSN and the Veterinary Practice Act, determination of medical need. As recently as last week, it still didn t appear the aldermen were responding, so a press release was written and distributed. Dr. Saidel suggested CVMA possibly hire a PT lobbyist. Motion Made, Seconded and Passed to override the bylaw, will not vote people out if they are not renewing due to financial hardship. Report of the Secretary: Dr. Newman reported. Read minutes from the February meeting. Motion Made, Seconded, and Passed for approval of the Feb. Board meeting minutes. COMMITTEE REPORTS Legislative: Dr. Saidel reported. Drs Nir, Greeley, Saidel attended Joint Committee Meeting. Meeting was adjourned without resolution. Unknown when it will resume. Membership: Dr. Cutright reported: The following veterinarians were presented for membership into the assoc: Drs. Pablo Garcia, Cheryl Toncray, James Vite, Elizabeth De Los Monteros, Monica Barnes, Rosemary LoGiudice, Amy Myers, and Katherine Hillebrand. Motion Made, Seconded, and Passed to approve these members for the association to be presented at the June general meeting. Life Membership: Dr. LaVerne De Leon Munsayac. Motion Made, Seconded and Passed to approve as a life member. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Dr. Nir suggested CVMA members who are also members of the ISVMA form a committee with Dr. Arndt as the chair. Encourage board members to be on the ISVMA. NEW BUSINESS Dr Nir would like to write a complimentary letter for Steve Dale to be sent to WGN, due to all of the bad press during MSN legislation. Motion Made, Seconded and Passed to write letter. April 2009 Executive Board Meeting Minutes Summary *Request from NBC segment for pets available for adoption. Opinion of chairs and Dr. Nir that this is not the business we are in, and there is an associated liability. Motion Made, Seconded, and Passed to allow letter to be sent declining adoptions at time of airing PE segments. Report of the Secretary: Dr. Newman read minutes from previous meeting. Discussed plan to combine Bulletin and Website committees into Communications Committee. Continuing Education: Dr. Alvi presented report. CE committee met to plan for the 2010 CE series. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Institute an ISVMA Representative Committee. They will now be expected to be present at the board meetings. To bring interests of the CVMA to the ISVMA and report on information from the ISVMA to the CVMA. Motion Made, Seconded, and Passed to require ISVMA rep to attend the EB meeting. CVMA s HUMAN ANIMAL BOND COMMITTEE is looking for volunteers interested in participating in the Pet Loss Helpline! Please contact the CVMA office at (630) 325-1231 if you are interested in attending a grief counseling training seminar. We need 15-20 volunteers. Both DVMs and their hospital staff can attend. Once we have a full sign-up, we will hold the training seminar at the CVMA office.
