Klondike Derby Sleds Klondike Derby sleds are pa erned a er Eskimo dog team sleds. Most are about six feet long, 18 to 24 inches wide, and three feet high at the driver's end. They are pulled by scouts holding a bridle. One scout rides in the sled and one drives the sled from the rear. The sled should also carry your patrol s gear during the day. Sleds may be used year a er year. Sleds can be made of any material, such as wood, plas c, or metal, but light and flexible may be a good idea. Most sleds are made of wood, o en using old downhill ski or PVC pipe runners. Keep in mind course condi ons may vary. Steel runners are good on hard ground, but in deep snow or mud you're in trouble because they sink. Wax or varnish the runners to minimize fric on. Commercially built sleds may not be used. Each sled must have a pulling harness made of rope or webbing to pull the sled. No poles are allowed. The pulling harness will be limited to no more than seven scouts. Display your troop/crew number on the sled. The internet contains many sled plans. Don t wait too long to build your sled.
