CRUFTS 2018 SHOWING AND HANDLING DOGS IN THE UK Those taking part in dog shows in the UK are expected to maintain and abide by the highest standards in accordance with Kennel Club Rules and Regulations (KC Show Regulation F3 refers). HANDLING Exhibitors are reminded that it is not acceptable to handle a dog in a manner which causes its feet not to touch the ground when on the move. The same applies to the practice of picking up dogs, often terriers, by their necks and/or tails when lifting them. If a dog winning Best of Breed has been handled as per the foregoing, the handler will not be permitted to the handle the dog in the Group and a replacement handler will be required for the dog to compete further. Similarly, if a dog is handled in this manner in the Group an alternative handler will need to be appointed for Best in Show. Exhibitors should note that such practices could constitute harsh handling and reports will be referred to the Committee under Kennel Club Show Regulations F11. CAGES/CRATES The use of cages/crates with wire false floors where the dog is not sitting on the base of the cage is not permitted at Crufts. In addition, each exhibitor is responsible for providing their own cage/crate identification. UNATTENDED DOGS Crufts is a public show and for the safety of all concerned, dogs should be supervised at all times. It is the exhibitors responsibility to ensure their dogs are not left unattended. CATEGORY 3 BREEDS AT CRUFTS The Kennel Club is committed to the health and welfare of dogs and to ensuring that healthy dogs are being exhibited and thereby given awards at shows. The Best of Breed award relevant to a Category 3 breed cannot be confirmed until the dog has passed an examination by the Show s official veterinary surgeon. If the dog fails to pass the examination it is ineligible to compete in the relevant group. (Kennel Club Show Regulation F(1)27.a. refers). Category 3 breeds are (Regulation F(1)27.a. refers). Basset Hound Bulldog German Shepherd Dog Neapolitan Mastiff Pug St. Bernard Bloodhound Dogue de Bordeaux Mastiff Pekingese Shar Pei ALL BEST OF BREED PRE-GROUP CHECK Correct as of going to print August 2017 A basic final check of each Best of Breed will be undertaken in the collecting ring by an Official from the show management and vet teams. The Crufts Committee is mindful that is has a duty of care towards all dogs entered at the show. The observation will focus on the obvious visible conditions which could compromise the dogs performance in the Group Competition (KC Regulation F(1)15b refers) PREPARATION OF DOGS No substance which alters the natural colour, texture or body of the coat may be present in the dog s coat for any purpose at any time during the Show. No substance which alters the natural colour of any external part of the dog may be present on the dog for any purpose at any time during the Show. Any other substance (other than water) which may be used in the preparation of a dog for exhibition must not be allowed to remain in the coat or on any other part of the dog at the time of exhibition. (Kennel Club Show Regulation F(B) refers). TRAVELLING WITH YOUR DOG Crufts exhibitors must ensure that their dogs fully comply with the entry rules for bringing dogs into the UK. In the case of dogs being brought from some countries, this will involve a process which can take a number of months to complete prior to travel to the UK and Crufts. For further details please see www.gov.uk/take-pet-abroad. If you require a health certificate for your dog to travel back home from Crufts, this cannot be supplied by the volunteer veterinary staff in the Veterinary Centre. However, as a service to exhibitors, Crufts has arranged for a veterinary surgeon from the 608 Veterinary Group to visit Crufts each day to arrange certification for you. This service will be available between 4pm and 5.30pm each day in the Veterinary Centre and exhibitors will be required to pay veterinary staff at the time of examination - the cost being 45 per certificate. Payment must be in cash as cheques and credit/debit cards cannot be accepted. Appointments can be made at the Veterinary Centre throughout the day. DOCKED TAILS Dogs which were docked before 6th April 2007 - If your dog was docked either in the UK or in a foreign country before 6th April 2007 then it may compete at Crufts. For dogs which were docked on or after 6th April 2007 - If your dog was docked on or after 6th April 2007 it is not, under the law, permitted to be shown at Crufts. CROPPED EARS No dog with cropped ears is eligible to compete at any Kennel Club licensed event. (Kennel Club Show Regulation B19 refers). SHOW STACKERS The use of show stackers is prohibited at Crufts. DOGS IN VEHICLES Appropriate action will be taken immediately in the event of dogs being unattended in vehicles and found to be in a distressed condition. 2

INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITORS AND HANDLERS HANDBOOK KENNEL CLUB REGISTRATION - AUTHORITY TO COMPETE THE KENNEL CLUB CODE OF CONDUCT The Kennel Club has developed a Code of Conduct to help advise exhibitors of what it and your fellow exhibitors expect of you. (Kennel Show Club Regulation F3 refers). The Kennel Club Code of Conduct has been developed to set out the Kennel Club s expectation for all those taking part in or attending events under its jurisdiction. These are not exhaustive and should be read in conjunction with relevant regulations as listed in the Kennel Club Year Book. A breach of these provisions may be referred to the General Committee for disciplinary action under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. All dogs must be of the correct temperament to enable the judge to examine it, independently of the exhibitor s assistance. Dogs with aggressive tendencies must not be exhibited. Sparring between dogs in the ring is not allowed. Conduct - participants have a duty both to their dogs and to others to make licensed events friendly and welcoming, and are expected to be co-operative and above all create a safe environment for all to enjoy their time at licensed events. In order to show your dog at Crufts your dog must have a Kennel Club Registration Number or an Authority To Compete Number (ATC). If your dog does not have an ATC number it cannot be entered for Crufts. ATC applications for Crufts entries must be received at the Kennel Club by 22nd December 2017. We are unable to guarantee issuing an ATC number for any application received after this date. Please be advised if you wish to apply for an Authority to Compete number for your dog you can now apply online as we no longer can accept Authority to Compete entries via email. Sportsmanship - participants should conduct themselves at all times in an appropriate fashion and should display good manners and respect towards other participants, show officials and to the judges. Any verbal communication with a judge should take place after judging has taken place and must be conducted in a polite and professional manner. Abusive or aggressive behaviour towards anyone at the show - including the judge, other participants, show management or other officials - will not be tolerated under any circumstances (further information appears later in this publication regarding harassment). Do not interfere with any dog whilst it is being judged. If you wish to apply online please visit www.crufts.org.uk/dogexhibitors Online entry is both secure and simple and allows complete review of the entry information submitted. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact our Registration Team on 01296 318540. 3

CRUFTS 2018 SHOWING AND HANDLING DOGS IN THE UK (CONTINUED) It is illegal and therefore not permitted to smoke anywhere in the halls. Mobile phones should be turned off whilst showing or whilst your dog is under test. If you have children, do not allow them to touch any dogs unless you have the permission of the owner for them to do so. Be aware of where your children are, and what they are doing, at all times. Take special care around benching areas where dogs may react to an unexpected approach. No-one should be subject to intimidation or made to feel alarmed or distressed or put in fear of reprisal. Harassment is a criminal offence. To that end the Kennel Club adopts a zero tolerance towards all type of harassment activity. Harassment may be defined as causing alarm, distress and anxiety and fear of physical violence or other threat, offensive statements, verbal abuse and threats. Conduct may include speech, obstruction and so on. As such conduct may involve a criminal offence the police may be involved and it may be that the Kennel Club will defer any action pending the outcome of such investigation and/or prosecution. It goes without saying that the Kennel Club expects courtesy and co-operation to be shown towards all staff and organisers at any Kennel Club licensed event. Whilst the pressures and tensions which arise at competitive level are understood, any aggression or abuse towards those who are simply undertaking their jobs for the benefit and interest of the exhibitor/ competitor and the audience and ultimately the dog itself cannot be tolerated. The Kennel Club Press Office is here to support exhibitors and to ensure that Crufts and the hobby of dog showing are portrayed positively. To help us do this we recommend talking positively about your sport and fellow competitors to the press, members of the public and on social media. If you have any concerns about any press enquiries, please email press.office@thekennelclub.org.uk. It is important to remember that any breach of Kennel Club Regulations may result in the matter being referred to the Kennel Club Committee for disciplinary action. Please note the following regulations apply to showing in the UK. The welfare of all dogs is of paramount importance. Exhibits should not be left unattended on benches, in cages or crates for lengthy periods without proper exercise and care. Dogs must not be left in vehicles on warm or hot days. Dogs are not permitted to wear muzzles of any kind whilst being judged. Attraction of a dog from outside the ring is not permitted in the UK. (Kennel Club Show Regulation F(1)17.h. refers). Exhibitors must ensure that they clean up after their dog if their dog fouls in a public place. (Kennel Club Show Regulation F.13. refers). The mating of bitches within the precincts of the show is not permitted. (Kennel Club Show Regulation F(1)14 refers). Any verbal communication with a judge should take place after judging has taken place and must be conducted in a polite and professional manner. Abusive or aggressive behaviour towards the judge or other exhibitors will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Exhibitors must not wear any type of identification of themselves or their dogs whilst showing their dogs. (Regulation F(1)17.g. refers). 4
