Just a Business of Ferrets 11018 Powell Road Thurmont, Maryland 21788 301-898-1568 fax 240-358-0673 www.jbferret.com jbferret@mindspring.com Established in 1988, JBF is a small-scale ferretry that is run in my home and produces a limited number of kits per year. All kits out of JBF are high quality pets with the potential to be champions. JBF has had over 50 Best In Show and Ferret of the Year winners (in house) and dozens of others from those kits which were sold. Years of selected breeding and hands-on care from birth ensure JBF kits to have solid conformations and personable temperaments. All kits are sold intact and the new owner takes responsibility to have the kit spayed or neutered when matured. All kits come with a one year genetic health guarantee. No kits are ever placed before nine (9) to ten (10) weeks of age. JBF ferrets will not be shipped under any circumstance. An experienced breeder is the best source for a well-bred, healthy ferret. To begin with, breeders carefully select the parents of each litter to emphasize desirable attributes and minimize faults in their progeny. Breeders are committed to improving breed soundness--that is, physical and mental health-- with every new generation. Another good reason to buy a kit from a breeder is that it gives you the opportunity to interact with the kit's dam and possibly the sire. You can, therefore, form a general impression of what the future holds for the kit you take home. Furthermore, buying from a breeder means that you're part of an extended family. Most breeders expect a call if the ferret has a crisis at any stage in its life, so they can help you understand and cope with the problem. They seem to feel, in fact, that while their kits must venture out into the world, they never really leave the fold. This can be especially comforting for the first-time ferret owners who can't even imagine what kinds of questions they'll have in the future. Come what may the conscientious breeder will be there. Goals & Objectives To promote the domestic ferret as a companion animal. To educate and provide up-to-date information to ferret owners, veterinarians, humane societies, the public, as well as pet stores and in general "the curious and uninformed." To encourage responsible ferret ownership. To support other shelters and those persons working with ferrets. To protect the domestic ferret against anti-ferret legislation, abuse, destruction, unsound breeding, and any practice deemed to lower the health standards or survivability of the species. Follow the guidelines set forth in AFA s Ferret Breeders and Breeding Position Statement. I hope this helps you to make an informed decision on the purchase of your first -- or next -- ferret! Happy ferreting! A multitude of ferrets is known as a "Business of Ferrets"

Agree Disagree I agree to all terms and conditions for acquiring a JBF ferret. Agree Disagree Just a Business of Ferrets will not place a ferret with anyone who: Is under 21 years of age. I will, however, consider placement with a parent of a person under this age. Does not have a good understanding of the needs of ferrets and the responsibility required for good ownership. Does not have the means to provide appropriate food, medical care, time and attention to a ferret. Wishes to acquire a ferret for any reason other than to be a cherished family pet. Ferrets will not be placed for use in any working purpose, such as hunting, nor will I place ferrets to be sold in pet stores, used as classroom pets, at petting zoos, etc. Ferrets will only be placed as breeding stock to other experienced, responsible breeders. I am willing to mentor beginning breeders on the ethics of responsible breeding.

AFA Ferret Breeders And Breeding Position Statement Guiding Principles: The breeder should have personal knowledge of each ferret within his/her care. The breeder should respect each individual ferret and respect the ferret as a domestic species. The breeder should strive to provide each ferret with the best possible existence, through good husbandry, and the appropriate sale and adoption programs, and education of others. The AFA further believes that because we, as humans, are entirely responsible for the control of the gene pool of ferrets (Mustela furo), that once we take a hand in the creation of life (i.e.; breeding ferrets), we are responsible for that life for its lifetime. The AFA recommends that the practice of breeding ferrets not be undertaken without careful consideration of the responsibilities involved. Breeders Responsibilities: The following criteria should be met before undertaking the breeding of pet ferrets. The breeder should have a thorough knowledge of ferret husbandry. The breeder should have a breeding plan. The plan should be geared toward improving the ferret as a pet species, as follows: Preservation and enhancement of the species genetic diversity without greatly modifying the original design of the species. Documenting and maintaining documented lineage of breeding ferrets. Avoidance of using ferrets that are genetically deficient. Promotion and enhancement of pet qualities, such as a gentle temperament. The breeder should be prepared to assume the financial and moral responsibilities for housing, maintenance, nutrition, medical and social needs according to established species parameters. The breeder should have an appropriate location and facilities for the breeding operation. The breeder should be prepared for and committed to spending a substantial amount of time overseeing the breeding, raising and socialization of young ferrets. No breeder should conduct his breeding program in a vacuum. He/she should have established relationships with other reputable ferret breeders for advice and support. The breeder should have the ability to implement a regular veterinary health maintenance program for all ferrets including a vaccination program, according to established guidelines. The breeder must be prepared to undertake the maintenance and care of all animals resulting from the breeding activities until a proper home can be found. This includes the willingness to take back ferrets that are returned to the ferretry and placements that did not work out. The AFA would further recommend that its members (hobbyist breeders) not knowingly be involved in the sale of pet ferrets through pet stores, or any other type of wholesale outlet, including mail order, agents or federally licensed dealers of commercial pet ferrets, individuals or institutions involved in research.

Just a Business of Ferrets Contract Addendum Responsibilities and Guarantees New Owner s Responsibilities: The ferret will be handled in a loving and gentle manner by all members of the new owner s household and by all guests who visit the new owner s home. The ferret will be fed a high-quality ferret and/or kitten food, will have fresh water available everyday, and will be housed in a clean and healthy environment. For the ferret s protection, the ferret will be housed in a spacious wire cage or ferret-proof room/area when there is no supervision. The ferret will also be provided with attention, companionship, exercise, and discipline. The ferret will receive proper vaccinations, timely medical attention, and maintenance/grooming to insure a healthy and happy pet. At no time will the ferret be descented, declawed, or have canines/incisors removed unless for a medical reason, and this must be discussed with JBF first. If a health issue does come up, the new owner is encouraged to contact JBF. JBF tracks the health of all ferrets placed. The new owner will have the ferret examined by a licensed ferret knowledgeable veterinarian within 96 hours. JBF must be informed of the examination s result by email or by fax. Failure to obtain the examination in the required time frame will nullify the following health guarantee. The new owner will provide the ferret with routine preventative care, such as, but not limited to: Annual physical examinations by a licensed ferret knowledgeable veterinarian. Following guidelines for vaccinating ferrets against canine distemper and rabies. Having the ferret fixed when agreed to and by a licensed ferret knowledgeable veterinarian experienced with ferret spay/neuter. The ferret must be paid in full by ten weeks of age, regardless of pick-up date, or all monies paid and all claims to the ferret will be forfeited. Deposits are refundable as follows: 100% refundable within 7 days 50% refundable if cancelled between 8 and 30 days 0% refundable if cancelled after 30 days The non-refundable portions of your deposit may be applied to a future JBF purchase within 1 year of the original reservation date. JBF Health Guarantee: The ferret is guaranteed until one year of age against fatal and life altering congenital disease which adversely affects the health of the ferret. This includes kidney, heart, pancreas, spine, and liver problems of a severe life threatening or altering nature. If the ferret dies within this one year time frame, the owner will pay to have a necropsy performed to ascertain reason. If reason is congenital, then JBF will replace the ferret.

All items covered under the health guarantee are by replacement only. No refunds. JBF will not be responsible for any medical expenses incurred. The owner realizes that owning a ferret means trips to the veterinarian and understands that he/she will be responsible for all payments. As of the date of delivery, the ferret has received at least one vaccination for canine distemper. The owner has been informed of this and of the ferret s future vaccination schedule. A ferret showing any serious genetic or congenital defect will be replaced as follows: The ferret must show the defect by one year of age. JBF must be notified of the problem within 2 business days of the licensed ferret knowledgeable veterinarian s determination and have two reports from two unassociated ferret knowledgeable veterinarians stating the same problem and JBF will provide a replacement ferret of equivalent value. No refund, in part or in full, will be given. If returning to JBF, the returned ferret must be in good condition, other than the specified problem, at the owner s expense. The owner will then qualify for a replacement ferret. Negligent care will be reported to the appropriate authorities. The owner is responsible for all transportation costs to and from JBF on a replacement ferret. This guarantee applies to the original owner only and is nontransferable to a second party. No replacement ferret will be given if the ferret has been bred or euthanized without JBF s permission. The replacement ferret will be mutually agreed upon by both parties and will be of comparable quality. It is understood that the replacement ferret may not be from the exact same litter as the original ferret. Any physical problem which is or could be the result of injury is not covered under this guarantee. No replacement ferret will be given if the ferret is spayed/neutered by a veterinarian lacking experience with ferrets and the ferret dies from the procedure. This contract addendum is binding when signed in conjunction with a JBF Ferret/Kit sales contract. This contract is null and void if the terms and conditions are not fulfilled. The owner agrees that he/she understands this contract fully, and that this contract is under the jurisdiction of the State of Maryland, in the county of Frederick. It is agreed that the place of venue shall be in Frederick County, Maryland. This agreement is a legally binding contract. The undersigned agree to the terms of this contract: Owner: Date: Breeder: Date:
