Meet the judge Ken Boyd and his wife Trudy Morgan have been involved in the sport of dog agility since 1993 and have trained a Corgi, Dobermans, Border Collies and Rat Terriers. Ken s Pembroke Welsh Corgi, MACH Tarfarnwr Green Woods Beckan, Becky, had earned the American Kennel Club s Master Agility Championship (MACH), the North American Dog Agility Counsel s NADAC Agility Trial Champion (NATCH) title, and the United States Dog Agility Association s Agility Dog Champion (ADCH) titles. Becky was the No. 1 ranked Pembroke Welsh Corgi in the AKC from 1996-1999 in Front and Finish and was ranked in the Top 10 in the USDAA from 1996-1998. In 1997, Ken and Becky won the national championships in the 12 jump height classes at the USDAA Grand Prix National Championship, the NADAC National Agility Championship and the AKC National Agility Championship, making them the only dog-and-handler team to win these three national championships in the same year. Ken is an agility judge for the AKC and the USDAA and he and Trudy live in Vista, CA, with their three Border Collies Digby, Freddie and Tickle; two rescue Rat Terriers Hopper and Maci; a rescue Shepherd mix GinGin; and rescue kitties Theodore and Jenny. Ken has master degrees in applied mathematics, electrical engineering and biochemistry and a doctorate in biophysics. After 32 years Ken recently retired from network/communications research at a Navy laboratory in San Diego. He currently teaches and judges dog agility; volunteers at high school science and robotics competitions and science fairs; and works fixing things around the 6-acre property Ken and Trudy bought a couple of years ago including building and improving their agility training field. A note on crating: We understand that crating will not be as expansive as the typical show barn. At our trial last November in this location, we had good attendance and were full on Saturday, and yet we were able to avoid assigned crating, Space was tight, and we asked competitors to take only a 2x3-foot space for entered dogs. Crates can be stacked to accommodate small dogs and any un-entered dogs. Crating in cars is an option, and we will designate the parking spaces closest to the front entry as reserved for those who crate in their cars. If we need to reserve a space for you, contact Courtney Keys at courtneypo@gmail.com. We aim to make this trial as pleasant as possible for our human and canine competitors. We appreciate your help in allowing us to have trials at this excellent location no dirt, no wind, no rain, and an air-conditioned place to run. The Premier class Who can enter: Dogs with an AX title are eligible to enter Premier Standard Regular. Dogs with an AX or AXP title are eligible to enter Premier Standard Preferred. Dogs with an AXJ title are eligible to enter Premier JWW Regular. Dogs with an AXJ or AJP title are eligible to enter Premier JWW Preferred. Exhibitors may enter Premier and Master Standard and/or JWW on the same day. Both Standard and JWW Premier courses will be Master level courses incorporating a number of elements that challenge the dog and handler in ways that are not seen on traditional AKC courses. These Premier elements include: Sequences like threadles Back-side jumps Pull-throughs Layering Challenging weave pole entries Longer running passes A bi-directional jump or tunnel is allowed to encourage handling strategies. Obstacle spacing on Premier courses may exceed the limits of those on Master courses. Premier courses will use the same obstacles as the corresponding Master course. At the judge s discretion a viaduct may be used in place of the panel jump, there may be 3 tunnel passes and there will be no table. A Premier course will have: 19 to 21 obstacles 3 side switches 4 Premier elements 5 challenges. Courses will be judged using AKC Master scoring and hand signals. To earn the Premier Agility Dog (PAD), Premier Agility Dog Preferred (PADP), Premier Jumpers Dog (PJD) or Premier Jumpers Dog Preferred (PJDP) titles, a dog must earn 25 qualifying scores with five qualifying scores earned for placing in the top 25% of the dogs that competed in their jump height. Dogs that are absent or withdrawn will not count toward the number of dogs competing in the jump height. The 25% calculation will be rounded to determine the number of 25% placements in each jump height. In the case of a tie both dogs will receive the top 25% placement. If a class has two or three dogs competing, the 1st place dog will be awarded a top 25% placement qualifying score If only one dog competes in the jump height, there will be no top 25% placement earned in that jump height. Premier Q s cannot be counted as Q s for titling, but they can be used toward qualifying for Nationals.
