PG DIPLOMA in Co-ordinator Veterinary Ophthalmology Research : Conducted a research on diaphragmatic hernia in dogs and the haematological bio-chemical and radiological parameters were studied for early diagnosis of the diseases. The problem was taken up with regard to the increasing road accidents in the city. The study was awarded the Best Thesis K.J.Hospital award. Cataract has been reported not only in older animals but the incidence is surprisingly high in young animals too. The need for the restoration of vision is felt to the fullest extent in watch dogs, like police dogs trained for bomb detection and security dog Extraordinarily brilliant dogs have to be condemned for failure of vision due to cataract. Hence a research on various types of extraction in dogs and subsequent IOL implantation was carried out and standardized two types of intraocular lens namely polymethylmethacrylate and silicone in dogs following extra capsular cataract extraction. Apart from restoration of vision the procedures help the dog to regain binocular vision, which is very essential for depth perception. The work was awarded the Young Woman Scientist award for the year 2000 by the Department of Science and Technology. Guided the students under Science and Technology programme
for the studies on the efficacy of low level laser therapy for wound healing in dogs. Extension / Clinical: The research on Cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation in dogs, had a good impact on the public. During and Also after the research, many dogs with cataract are being referred to Madras Veterinary College Hospital from different parts of the country. A column was written on the Hindu dated 30-08-1999. on cataract surgery in dogs, which focused mainly on the research conducted in the University. Given a talk in Doordharsan in Vayalum Vazhvum programme about the incidence of common ophthalmic affections in dogs and their surgical treatment and emphasized the use of intraocular lens implantation in dogs. Given another programme in AIR, Vannamani Malai through which a public awareness of the research was made. Subsequently one more interview was done by the AIR in which the pet owners also participated. As a result of this wide exposure a large number of dogs with eye affections are being referred from various parts of the country. a) Teaching Methods Prepared slides for all the important operative procedures in Small Animal Surgery for Under Graduate teaching Prepared Video cassettes for all the important surgical procedures in Small Animal Surgery for Under Graduate teaching Extension work/community service : -
