OVITROL X-TEND FLEA & TICK SPOT ON FOR DOGS TECHNICAL MONOGRAPH TM

TM Dear Colleague, Fleas, ticks and other biting parasites continue to be a problem for pets. Clients look to you, their veterinary professional, for products that are not only powerful, but affordable. Veterinary Products Laboratories is continually striving to develop innovative solutions that provide veterinarians new advantages in the battle against fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. We are pleased to add Vet-Kem Ovitrol X-Tend Flea & Tick Spot On for Dogs and Ovitrol X-Tend Flea & Tick Spot On for Cats to our complete system of flea and tick control products that deliver highly efficacious formulations that are gentle on the environment with a very low acute mammalian or avian toxicity. Ovitrol X-Tend brand products contain the molecule Etofenprox, for quick and permanent knockdown of fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes that is combined with a proven IGR for extended control of flea eggs and flea larvae. Unlike traditional pyrethroids, Etofenprox is a non-ester (ether) pyrethroid chemical. As such, it is a non-organophosphate, non-carbamate proven to reduce the toxic risks to all pets (particularly cats). It provides the rapid termination of parasites that is demanded, along with the extended control that is desired. Offered exclusively to licensed, practicing veterinarians, Vet-Kem Ovitrol X-Tend Flea & Tick Spot On for Dogs and Ovitrol X-Tend Flea & Tick Spot On for Cats provide veterinary professionals with the ideal combination of efficacy for the patient and cost effectiveness for the client. With these new additions, the Vet-Kem Ovitrol X-Tend family of products makes it possible for veterinarians to prescribe a combination of products to solve each pet owner s parasite challenge on the pet, in the home and in the yard. Outdoors, the larvae are more likely to be found in shady locations, often where the pet rests. The larvae feed on organic material including flea feces, flea eggshells, other flea larvae, and organic debris. After several larval stages, the larva spins a silken cocoon and pupates. FLEAS, TICKS AND MOSQUITOES The pupae can be found in the same locations as the larvae. The adult C felis can begin emerging as early as 8 days after initiation of the pupal stage or can remain in the cocoon for up to a year. Adult emergence is stimulated by vibration, mechanical pressure, increases in carbon Pupal Stage dioxide, and increases in temperature. Adults may remain quiescent in the cocoon for up to 50 weeks at cooler temperatures (11 C [51.8 F]) and when there are no appropriate environmental stimuli. FLEA life cycle Adult Flea Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes are the most common ecto-parasites of dogs and cats. They are more than just a nuisance; they can be a health risk to both dogs and their owners. Understanding their life cycles and habits can help in understanding how to combat them. Ticks Larval Stage Egg Stage Fleas Fleas are small wingless insects that are flattened laterally. The flea most commonly found on both dogs and cats in North America is Ctenocephalides felis, the cat flea. 1 The cat flea has a very wide host range and can be found on wild animals including raccoons, opossums, skunks, and foxes as well as our pets. Flea bites are very irritating to pets, but they can also lead to serious medical conditions. Heavy infestations, particularly in young animals, may lead to iron deficiency, anemia or even death. Flea allergy dermatitis, a hypersensitivity reaction to the antigens in flea saliva, is one of the most common causes of skin disease in dogs and cats. In some cases, they may act as vectors of disease. Fleas are also the intermediate host for the tapeworm Dipylidium caninum and the filarial worm Acanthocheilonema reconditum (formerly Dipetalonema reconditum). Fleas are also capable of transmitting several pathogens including Mycoplasma spp, Bartonella spp and Rickettsia spp. Some of these have zoonotic potential. In order to understand the steps needed to completely eliminate a flea infestation, it is important to understand their life cycle. Eliminating adult fleas seen on the dog or cat is one key step in controlling and preventing an infestation of this fast-multiplying parasite. It can also require a complete program that effectively kills the often unseen immature stages that are in the pet s environment. Adult fleas begin feeding immediately when on the host and must feed before mating. Egg production begins within 20 to 24 hours of females taking their first blood meal. A female flea can produce 40 to 50 eggs per day and she may live 4 to 25 days. The eggs fall off wherever the animal is, whether moving around or at rest. The eggs, pearly white ovals, fall off the host into the environment. Indoors, the eggs hatch into tiny (0.5 mm), light-colored, worm-like larvae which live deep in carpet fibers, cracks and crevices, or in bedding or furniture. Ticks are another important pest of pets and people. The majority of ticks infesting dogs and cats belong to the Ixodidae family, which include the Deer tick (Ixodes scapularis), Brown Dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus), Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum), and American Dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis). Ixodid ticks are flattened dorsally and have a highly sclerotized dorsal shield. The dorsal shield in males covers the entire dorsal surface and in females only extends part of the way. The capitulum or head with mouthparts of ixodid ticks can be seen when ticks are examined dorsally. Ticks are identified based on various criteria such as size, body shape, location of the head, appearance of mouth parts, and ornamentation. Female adult ticks have a partial dorsal shield that allows them to expand as they feed. They may grow as much as 100 times their original weight before they detach from the host. Male adult ticks also take blood meals, but because they have a complete dorsal shield they will not increase in size as much as females and still appear flat after feeding. Ticks have 4 developmental stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Ticks are obligate blood feeders with every life stage except the egg taking blood meals. Most ixodid ticks are 3-host ticks that molt off the host between their blood meals. They may or may not feed on a different host during each stage. The entire life cycle of some ticks may take 3 years to complete. Example of Ixodidae Ticks Ticks are not only voracious blood feeders, and an infestation can cause anemia, they are important vectors of disease. They transmit pathogens that cause diseases such as anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, cytauxzoonosis, rickettsiosis and Lyme disease. A neurotoxin produced by females of several tick species can cause tick paralysis. 1. Biology, treatment and control of flea and tick infestations. Blagburn BL, Dryden MW. Mosquitoes Typical life cycle of 3-host tick Nymph Eggs Larva Mosquitoes require water to complete their life cycle. Some mosquitoes lay their eggs on the surface of fresh or stagnant water either singularly or in rafts. These eggs hatch within 24 to 48 hours. Other species of mosquitoes lay eggs which only hatch when flooded with water after a drying period. The legless larvae, commonly called wigglers, live in the water for 4 to 14 days depending on water temperature. The larvae grow larger, primarily feeding on algae, plankton, and fungi and molt 4 times. At the final molt, they become a pupa. The mosquito pupae, commonly called tumblers, also live in the water. The pupa floats at the surface and does not feed during this stage. The pupal stage lasts from 1 to 4 days depending upon species and temperature. The metamorphosis of the mosquito into an adult is completed within the pupal case. Adult male and female mosquitoes feed on nectar, but only female adult mosquitoes require blood meals. Acquiring a blood meal is necessary for egg production. Mosquitoes are vectors for several diseases important to companion animals and humans such as heartworm disease and West Nile Virus. Egg Stage Larval Stage Pupal Stage Adult Mosquito Adult Adult females drop off the host and lay eggs. Eggs hatch within a few weeks to a month. 6 1504 TechMono_DOG_REV3.indd 6-7 Larvae 6-legged larvae feed on a host for several days and can live in the environment for days (6 to 90) before molting. Nymphs 8-legged nymphs feed on the host for several days and can live in the environment for days (17 to 100) before molting to adults. Adult Adult ticks may live for an extended period of time before feeding. 7 5/15/13 2:57 PM

Piperonyl butoxide (PBO) is an organic compound that acts as a pesticide synergist that blocks the insect s metabolism of Etofenprox. As part of their defense system, insects are able to break down some active ingredients (such as pyrethrins) to the point of making them less effective. PBO blocks a metabolic pathway in the insect, allowing Etofenprox to be more effective. ETOFENPROX Vet-Kem X-Tend branded products contain the molecule Etofenprox, for quick and permanent knockdown of fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, in combination with an IGR to offer extended control of flea eggs and flea larvae. Unlike traditional pyrethrin-based products that have limited killing power and are potentially harmful to dogs and cats (especially cats), the Vet-Kem X-Tend products impart the rapid termination of fleas and ticks that is demanded with the extended control that is desired, all in formulations that are proven to reduce the toxic risks to all pets and the environment. Etofenprox [2-(4-ethoxyphenyl)-2-methylpropyl 3-phenoxybenzyl ether] is a pyrethroid-like insecticide. It is not a traditional pyrethroid. The molecule contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen and is an ether rather than an ester. All of the other commercially available pyrethroids are esters. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies Etofenprox as a non-ester pyrethroid. Mode of action ACTIVE INGREDIENTS n Black: Carbon, C n White: Hydrogen, H n Red: Oxygen, O Etofenprox has a similar mode of action to traditional pyrethroids in that it is a sodium channel blocker. It acts on the nervous system of ecto-parasites and disturbs the function of neurons by interfering with the sodium channels. Etofenprox has a broad spectrum of activity including fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. Ovitrol X-Tend Flea & Tick Spot On for Dogs provides flea, tick, and mosquito protection for dogs and puppies over 10 weeks of age for up to 30 days. In heavy flea infestations, retreatment can occur 8 days after the initial application. Do not retreat more than once a month. This product is water resistant and remains efficacious following exposure to rainfall or swimming. TOXICITY Profile Etofenprox has been tested for safety in dogs, puppies, cats and kittens. At doses up to 3X the recommended rate, no Etofenprox-related adverse reactions were observed. Etofenprox essentially has very low toxicity in mammals by the oral, dermal or inhalation routes. The oral toxicity of Etofenprox in avian species is very low. Source: *The Pesticide Manual 13th Edition 2003 Editor: CDS Tomlin; Publisher: British Crop Protection Council (S)-Methoprene is an insect growth regulator (IGR) that disrupts the flea life cycle. It acts by mimicking natural juvenile hormone. In the life cycle of insects, decreases in juvenile hormone levels promote the next stage to emerge. Juvenile hormone is present when flea eggs are formed, and a decrease in juvenile hormone causes a flea egg to hatch into a flea larva. Juvenile hormone must be absent for a pupa to molt to an adult. Treatment with (S)-Methoprene breaks the life cycle of the parasite, controlling potential infestations. 8 9

Efficacy Against Fleas and Ticks Study Design Three treatment groups of dogs were established for these evaluations. The treatment groups were treated with the label rate of Ovitrol X-Tend Flea & Tick Spot On for Dogs. For evaluations against fleas, a known number of fleas were placed on the animals at different time intervals posttreatment. After a prescribed period of time, the animals were combed to remove any fleas living or dead. studies Ticks were evaluated in a similar manner as fleas, a known number of ticks were placed on the animals and after the prescribed time period, ticks remaining on the animal were evaluated for mortality. Ovicidal efficacy was generated by collecting flea eggs from both treated and untreated groups and incubating the eggs to evaluate for egg hatch.
