Bitch CC Ch Kumormai Verve Best Puppy Jasmine Jewel Du Ranc De Bannes at Cyberus Best Veteran Cyberus The Phantom I would like to thank the Committee for inviting me to judge the 22 nd Championship Show of the Mastiff Association. The venue was superb and the atmosphere fantastic. Having served as a officer on both of the Mastiff Clubs in England, I honestly think that the M.A. although not the oldest is certainly the best. I would like to thank the owners and handlers of the Mastiffs for the clean condition they were presented in, I certainly appreciated it, as I am a very hands on judge. I would also like to thank the owners who made the long journey over from Belgium & France who wanted my opinion of their Mastiffs. Regarding The Health of Mastiffs and its place on the High Profile Breed list I totally agreed with the Kennel club. When I first started showing, many mastiffs movement was appalling, yet they won CC's and became Champion's. Today was such a pleasant surprise. I had only 2 unsound Mastiffs and they went unplaced. When judging Mastiffs I look for the 2 T's & 3 S's. Type & Temperament, Size, Substance and Soundness. The Mastiff is not a tall dog like a Great Dane. Yes it should be quite high, but it must have a wide and deep fore chest and a massive ribcage. I think many All-Round judges expect a Mastiff to move like a Great Dane, and then moan about the Mastiff s lack of movement. It is like expecting a Shire horse to run the Derby or Grand National.

What we must not sacrifice when trying to address the Mastiff health problems is the size and substance of the body, and the strength and ratios of the head that the standard asks for. I did have a few mastiffs present today that were to fine in head, lacked width of forechest and curvature of the ribcage, these lighter Mastiffs moved very soundly but sadly they lacked type and that is what makes the Mastiff what it is, and what the Kennel Club Standard asks for. I was very pleased with my main winners - they had it all, my main concern on the Mastiffs I judged today was straight behinds (lack of rear angulations) and the lack of width of the 1 st & 2 nd thighs, although the movement was sound it lacked drive. Finally a big thank you to my two ring stewards, you made my job so much easier. Class 1 - VETERAN DOG Entries 2 Absentees 0 1 st Mrs VS Miller s CYBERUS THE PHANTOM (Best Veteran In Show) What a nice moving seven year old brindle this is. He is not the largest, but he is well constructed with good front and rear angulations. Viewed from any angle he is harmonious. Very nice head with clear dark eyes and good dentition, correct height to length of body. I just wish he was bigger all over but with the same ratios. I was pleased to award Best Veteran in Show. 2 nd Miss D. Baxter s CH LABARYTH BOY MACKENZIE FOR NOBLEHEART Stacked up this nine year old fawn looked fantastic. He has type and the size I was looking for. But type and size must be complimented by movement. He had the best head and body of the 2 veteran males, but unfortunately his age is now affecting his movement. Class 2 - MINOR PUPPY DOG Entries 3 Absentees 0 1 st Mr. R. Lieurance HEXNORDEN HAIL CEASAR My notes said easy winner of this class, lots to like. At six months and one day this quality fawn needs ring craft training. Not every judge is as understanding and as lenient as me, but I am not judging statues, as long as I can get my hands on to asses him is all that matters. He is a very balanced puppy with everything in the right place. But I would have liked him a touch fatter, you need the fat covering to turn into substance and muscle. He had the best head in the class with a good depth of stop, good width of back skull and muzzle. His eyes were dark and clear, he has good dentition and good pigmentation. His front assembly is good, his body is the right length to his height, and he has a good top-line finished by a good tail-set. His rear angulation is good and this helped to make him the best moving puppy in this class. 2 nd Mr & Mrs Clarke s GATOR DEBRA DAMO This six month old young brindle was in hard condition for such a baby. Sometimes less exercise and more food to bulk up the body is called for. I always like my puppies to be fat, I do not want them to end up looking like Great Danes. He has a

nice head but lacked the depth of stop of my winner. His eyes and dentition were good as was the set of ears. He has a good front assembly with good bone and neat feet, but I felt his body was a touch to long and too dippy when stacked up. Rear angulation was good and his movement was acceptable. 3 rd Mr & Mrs Ruskin s KARYSMHOR SIMPLY RED Class 3 - PUPPY DOG Entries 2 Absentees 0 1 st Mr R Allen s JONAH LOMU DU RANC DE BANNES (Best Puppy Dog) What a powerful fawn puppy this is, nine months old on the day. Very strong head with correct head ratios, well set ears, clear dark eyes and good dentition. Excellent pigmentation of the mask and ears. He has a strong muscular neck, a strong front with excellent width and depth of fore- chest. He has massive bone, but I would have liked slightly tighter feet. Correct height to length of body combining a massive ribcage which was well let down and a nice top-line. Being critical I would have liked a higher tail set. He has good width of 1st and 2 nd thigh's which were in hard muscular condition for one so young, but I would have liked a touch more angulation at the rear. He moved soundly in this class, but in the challenge for Best Dog he bunny hopped. I think this was due to a change of handler. In the challenge for Best Puppy Male, I moved him again and asked the handler to keep a check on his movement. It worked and he moved soundly enough for me to award him Best Puppy Male. 2 nd Mrs D Laubriat Bellotto s JORGAN MADE OF STEEL DU RANC DE BANNES Litter brother to my winner. Another fawn of good quality. Correct head ratios with everything in the right place. Correct height to length of body. He is of a good size but he lacked the substance of his litter brother. He lost out on strength of head width of fore-chest and spring of rib, but he does have better rear angulations than his brother. Movement was very sound. It will be interesting to see how they compare in two years time when they reach their prime. Class 4 - JUNIOR DOG Entries 3 Absentees 0 1 st Mrs E Knight s GILFKEBIR INVICTUS BY KUMORMAI Very nice 16 month old fawn. Good head ratios when viewed in side profile, but when viewed from the front the muzzle could be a touch wider. He has dark clear eyes and good dentition, although I would like more width between the canines. Pigmentation is good. Strong neck into a good front assembly finished off by nice tight feet.good height to length of body, with good depth of rib and good topline. Being critical I would like more width of 1 st and 2 nd thighs and a higher tail-

set. Movement was very good with reach in front and drive from the rear. Presented by a very good handler 2 nd Mr G & Mrs N Simister s MULLAK KING PSI FOR CADERMIST At 14 months this apricot was giving away 2 months to my winner. He is a very nice dog with a good head, but he did not have the depth of stop as my winner. Very good front assembly and a good top-line coupled with a massive rib-cage. I would have liked more rear angulation and more width of 1St and 2 nd thighs. Movement was sound but not the purpose of my winner. Again presented by a good handler. 3 rd Mr C & Mrs L Saenen-Steegmans s DIMRILL MEN OF ROHAN Class 5 - NOVICE DOG Entries 2 Absentees 0 1 st Mrs D & Mr O Williams & Wilkes SIETEMAR BALTHASAR What a surprise to find this 22 month old fawn in Novice. He has excellent type, Strong head with correct ratios but I would not want any more work in the head. Strong front with good width of fore-chest, well boned legs and good feet, He has height coupled with the correct body length. Good depth and curve of the ribcage, being critical I would have liked a higher tail set and a touch more rear angulation with more width of 1 st and 2 nd thighs. Moved very soundly, but I would have liked more drive from the rear. 2 nd Mr C & Mrs L Saenen-Steegmans s SEASIDE MASTIFF S EMPIRE This 22 month old brindle was in excellent condition, such good muscle tone. This helped him power around the ring, but the movement needs to be more controlled. He is such a sound dog. He had better hindquarters than my winner, but lacked the impressive head and size and substance of my winner. His head plains are good as is his height to length of body. Class 6 - POST GRADUATE DOG Entries 6 Absentees 0 1 st Mrs E. Norris DARKLING MUDDY WATERS AT HEXNORDEN My notes said love first three placements. This 21 month old Fawn looked stunning when viewed in side profile, everything flowed into one-another. Quality head with good depth of stop, good ear and eye placements and good dentition. Strong neck into a well-made front assembly. Good depth and curve of the ribcage, but I would have liked more covering of the ribs to finish off the overall picture, very good hindquarters helped to provide sound free flowing movement. Presented by a caring handler.

2 nd Mrs M & Mr M Pearson s CWMTYSSWG KARANTEG Another 21 month old fawn who should have a bright future. At this stage his head is not as developed as my winner. The eyes were clear and he has good dentition, good length of neck into a well made front with good bone and neat feet. Good depth and curvature of the rib cage. Good top-line both static and on the move. Nice hindquarters and a good tail-set. Movement was fluent and sound. 3 rd Mr & Mrs J Chapman s KUMORMAI CLOSE ENCOUNTER Res VHC Mrs V Miller s MULLAK HANDOSOME HUGO Mr A Phillips CEDWALLA RICHARD Class 7 - LIMIT DOG Entries 3 Absentees 1 1 st Miss C Smith s ALONZOBAR VICTORY FOR DOBUNNI (Reserve Dog CC & Reserve Best In Show) At only 27 months this strong fawn has not quite reached full maturity. He had the size and substance I was looking for and he had the correct height to length of body ratio. He has a strong head, but I would not want any more work in it. The head ratios are good and the ear, and eye placements are correct. The eyes were dark and clear, and dentition is good. Strong muscular neck into a wellmade front. Good width and depth of fore-chest, well boned legs and good feet. Being very critical I would have liked a firmer top-line when stacked up, but on the move he kept a level top-line. He has strong muscular hindquarters but I would have liked a touch more angulation. His handler moved him at the right speed to show off his sound movement. I was pleased to award the Reserve Dog CC and Reserve Best in Show. 2 nd Mr S & Mrs T Andrews ENNO DEL PENON DI IFACH VOM CYBERUS This two year old was a lot smaller in stature than my winner. He has a pleasing head but I would have liked more depth of stop. He has dark clear eyes, good dentition and good pigmentation, He has a nice wide front but I found him a touch straight in shoulder and therefore lacked reach in front on the move. He had a good top-line both static and on the move. He has good rear angulation and excellent muscle tone. Movement was sound but a touch untidy in front. He was presented by a very competent handler. Class 8 - OPEN DOG Entries 4 Absentees 2 1 st Mrs K. Dodd-Utting, Mrs E. Herring & Mr J. Dodd s CH CEDWALLA COUNTRY BOY BY HEFFALUMP (Dog CC & BEST IN SHOW)

Very imposing five year old fawn. He has height coupled with the correct length of body. He has substance, he has type, he has an excellent temperament and lastly of all he is sound. Viewed from any angle he portrays power and is so harmonious. He has a beautiful head, with correct ratios with well-set ears. His eyes are dark and clear. He has good dentition with a wide bite. Strong muscular neck of good length into a superb front construction. His chest is wide and deep and he has well boned legs, being very critical I would have liked tighter feet. Fantastic body shape with a massive ribcage. Good top-line both static and on the move. He has a nice rear end with a good tail set and good width of 1 st and 2 nd thighs which were well muscled. I'm being very critical when I say I would like a touch more angulation at the rear. His movement was a joy to watch, he had reach in front and drive from the rear. Presented by a very skillful handler. I was pleased to award him the Dog CC and Best in Show. 2 nd Mr G & Mrs J Pennie s CH CWYMTYSSWG GALANT HERO Another five year old fawn who was shown in excellent condition. He lacked the height and stature of my winner. I liked his head ratios in side profile, but viewed from the front I would have liked more width of the skull and a squarer muzzle. He has clear dark eyes and good dentition but the bite could be wider. Good pigmentation of the mask and ears. Strong muscular neck, he has good front angulation but I would have liked more width of fore-chest. He has good bone but I would have liked better feet. He carries his top-line well both static and on the move, I would have liked more curvature and depth to the ribcage and this would have stopped him looking too tubular. He has an excellent tail set and wellmuscled hindquarters. Again I would have liked a touch more angulation at the rear. Movement was very sound and fluent as you would expect from a lighter dog. Class 9 VETERAN BITCH Entries 2 Absentees 1 st Mrs K. Dodd-Utting, Mrs E. Herring & Mr J. Dodd s SUNCAMO MRS T BINDY BY HEFFALUMP Not far off nine years of age, this brindle is very balanced. She is not the tallest but she does have substance and bone. A very pleasing head with good eyes and dentition, excellent depth of stop and a nice wide skull, strong muscular neck. Good depth and width of fore chest nice body and good hindquarters. She moved extremely well for her age. It was nice to see a caring and competent handler present her. Class 10 MINOR PUPPY BITCH Entries 7 Absentees 0 1 st Mr S. & Mrs T Andrews JASMINE JEWEL DU RANC DE BANNES AT CYBERUS (Best Puppy Bitch & Best Puppy in Show)

What a smashing young fawn lady this is and easy winner of this class. Nine months old on the day and litter sister to my Best Puppy Male. Stacked up she looked a dream. Walking around her she was balanced when viewed from any angle. Her head is developing nicely with well-set ears, well positioned clear dark eyes and good dentition. Excellent pigmentation of mask and ears completed a quality head. Good length of neck into such a well-constructed front with good bone and neat feet. Correct height to length of body, good depth and curvature of the ribs and a level top-line both static and on the move. Nice angulation at the rear with good width of 1 st and 2 nd thighs. Movement was sound and fluent, the drive will come as this young lady matures. Again a very competent and caring handler. I was pleased to award Best Puppy Bitch and then Best Puppy in Show. 2 nd Mr B & Mrs E. Norris HEXNORDEN THUNDERSTRUCK Another quality Fawn, just six months and one day. Giving away 3 months at this stage of their development is a lot. She has a pleasing head with the right ratios and this is complemented by excellent pigmentation. She has good ear and eye placements and good dentition. Good front and rear angulations and a nice body in-between. Movement like my winner was very sound. It will be interesting to see how these two compare in two years time when they are nearly fully mature. 3 rd Mr C & Mrs L Saenen-Steegmans s WALDA OF SEVEN OAKS Res VHC Mr I & Mrs L MacFarlane s KARYSMHOR PINK CASHMERE Mr R Beaumont & Mrs C Hesketh s KARYSHMOR MELLOW YELLOW Class 11 PUPPY BITCH Entries 1 Absentees 0 1 st Mr C & Mrs L Saenen-Steegmans s WALDA OF SEVEN OAKS This 8 month old Fawn was placed 3 rd in minor puppy behind two beautiful young ladies. This youngster has a pleasing head which is all in proportion. Ears, eyes and dentition are good. She has a well-made front assembly and a nice rear end. She has good length to height of body. But her top-line let her down. (Handlers need to be aware of their dogs faults and try to correct them before the judge spots them). On the move her top-line was good as was her movement. Class 12 - JUNIOR BITCH Entries 5 Absentees 2 1 st Ms J. Bowdery s MORGANLEFAY TINA S CHOICE

My notes said three quality bitches. I loved this 15 month old fawn s expression. She has the most beautiful dark clear eyes, so soulful. Excellent depth of stop, well set ears, good dentition and good pigmentation, with strong muscular neck into a nice front assembly. Being critical I would have liked more filling of the fore-chest. She has good bone and good feet. Well off for height and the correct length of body to compliment it. Good depth and curvature of the ribcage, but I would have liked a firmer top-line. (I am being very critical here). Good front and rear angulations and good muscle tone gave reach in front and drive from the rear which provided sound fluent movement. Again a very caring handler who puts her dog's welfare first. 2 nd Miss D Baxter s JONQUILLE BELLA FOR NOBLEHEART DE LA GRANDE ALZINE Very nice 13 month old fawn. Nice head but not the depth of stop nor the width of muzzle as my winner. The ears and eyes are well positioned and the eyes are dark and clear. Good length of neck into a well-made front, she has a better fore-chest than my winner but lacked the bone of my winner. Her height to length of body ratio is good and she has a better top-line than my winner. She has good hindquarters and a good tail set. Movement was sound but lacked the conviction of my winner. 3 rd Mr G. Zadeh DALNARCK PRINCESS MABEL FROM FAYNAD Class 13 - NOVICE BITCH Entries 3 Absentees 1 1 st Mr G Zadeh s FAYNAD MORELLA This 16 month old apricot brindle is not the tallest, but she makes up for that in type and substance. She has a strong head but retains her femininity. Good eyes, well set ears, good dentition with good width between the canines. She has a good forechest and has well boned legs and good feet. Massive ribcage, good front and rear angulations and good width of 1 st and 2 nd thighs. Moved extremely well. Pleased to award Best Novice and Best Brindle. 2 nd Mrs L. Proudfoot s SALFORDA SHERRY This 2l month old fawn brindle was bigger than my winner in side profile and head wise had a better depth of stop, but when viewed front on lacked the width and depth of fore-chest. The skull also lacked width between the ear carriage and the muzzle could have been wider, I would have also liked a wider bite. Ear placement was good and the eyes were dark and clean. She did not have the bone of my winner but she did have nice tight feet. Correct height to length of body with a good topline. Her rear angulation was good but I would have liked more width to the 1 st and 2 nd thighs. As you would expect from a lighter made mastiff, movement was sound and fluent. Both of these bitches were handled very well.

Class 14 - POST GRADUATE BITCH Entries 5 Absentees 2 1 st Mr C Hill s FRAGILIS GOLDFRAPP Very nice two year old fawn. Strong head but remains feminine. Excellent pigmentation, Dark clear eyes, Good head ratio's Strong muscular neck into a well-constructed front. Excellent angulation front and rear, good bone and excellent feet. Correct height to length of body. Nice top-line and tail-set, good width and well-muscled 1 st and 2 nd thighs. Moved soundly with ease around the ring. 2 nd Miss J Bowdery s SHERWOOD S LITTLE ACORNS OAKS GROW AT MORGANLEFAY A nice four year old apricot. A touch nervous at first but I was able to get my hands on her and assess her properly. Very nice head all in proportion, darkest of eyes and excellent pigmentation. She is not as tall as my winner but she is balanced. Good front and rear angulations and superb muscle tone on the hindquarters. This bitch is so sound she flew round the ring. I appreciated a calm and caring handler who did not panic when this bitch played up at first, she calmly stacked her up again and reassured her. 3 rd Ms R King s SALFORDA SINGAPORE SLING FOR BLEDIG Class 15 - LIMIT BITCH Entries 7 Absentees 0 1 st Mr C Hill s FRAGILIS FOOFIGHTER (Bitch CC & BOS) My notes said all seven bitches in this class were sound! This 2 year old fawn is litter sister to my post-graduate winner. This bitch looked so harmonious when viewed from any angle. I loved her head, slightly larger than her sister. Excellent width between the ears and excellent width and squareness of muzzle, dark clear eyes and fantastic pigmentation. Strong neck into such a well-constructed front assembly. Lovely shoulder placement, good width and depth of fore-chest, well boned legs and neat feet. Nice body-shape and very good rear angulations. Excellent muscle-tone and width of 1 st and 2 nd thighs. She moved very soundly in the challenge for the Bitch CC, and I had no hesitation in awarding it. Well done. But in the challenge for Best in Show and Then Reserve Best in Show although she moved soundly she lost her drive from behind and therefore paid the price. 2 nd Mrs E. Knight s RUMOUR HAS IT BY KUMORMAI At nearly three years old this brindle is a powerful bitch with excellent muscletone. She was not as tall as my winner and is not as harmonious. I really liked her head profile - it is so strong, her eyes were dark and clear and she has well set

ears. She has well boned legs but I would have liked more height to balance her out. She has a hard body and very strong hindquarters. Her handler moved her at the correct speed to show of her fluent movement. 3 rd Mrs L. Proudfoot s FRAGILIS FIBONACCI SERIES OF SALFORDA Class 16 - OPEN BITCH Entries 4 Absentees 2 1 st Mrs E Knight s CH KUMORMAI VERVE (Res Bitch CC) This three year old was the most harmonious of the two present in this class. Although I would have liked her a touch taller I found her to be so balanced, with every part flowing into one-another. She has a pleasing head shape with everything in the right place. Her eyes were dark and clear. She has good front and rear angulations and a strong body in-between with excellent depth and curve of the ribcage. She has a good top-line both static and on the move. She moved with reach in front and drive from the rear. Pleased to award the Reserve CC. 2 nd Mrs D. Harding s CH MULALLOO MIDSUMMER MAGIC This 3 year old fawn lost out to my winner on width of back skull, width of muzzle and width of bite. But I liked her head in side profile. She has good dark eyes and good pigmentation. She has a good width and depth of fore-chest, but I found her a touch straight in shoulder. She has good bone and nice feet, good height to length of body and a nice top-line finished by a good tail-set. I would also have liked a touch more rear angulation. Her movement was very sound but lacked the reach and drive of my winner. I have been very critical here, she is a very nice bitch.
