2011 74 th Annual Meeting AKC Beagle Advisory Committee The meeting of the 2011 Beagle Advisory Committee convened via teleconference on June 21, 2011 at 10:00 AM EST. A total of 520 Beagles earned Field Championship titles in 2010, equaling to the number in 2009. The Beagle went from fifth to fourth place in the ranking of breed registrations. Field staff presented nine regular judges seminars with over 130 attendees and twenty-five Advanced Judges Seminars with over 330 attendees. 2
Doug Ljungren encouraged the Beaglers to work with the field staff to recruit new clubs and participates to the sport. The field staff will assist new clubs interested in becoming licensed to hold AKC trials and two couple pack events. Items to Be Voted On 1) Award a Grand Field Champion title for dogs that have earned an adequate number of wins and points in Brace and Gundog Federation annual Championship trials. These trials must be licensed by the AKC. After some discussion, made the motion to add AKC National Championships. Art Clay seconded the motion. This item was amended to: Award a Grand Field Champion title for dogs that have earned two wins and 90 points in Brace and Gundog Federation annual Championship trials & AKC National Championships, all of which must be AKC licensed. The dog must have already earned its Field Championship title to be eligible to earn points toward a Grand Field Champion title 12 For, 0 Against Placements earned in the following Federation Championship trials will count toward the Grand Field Champion title, assuming the trial is AKC licensed and the placing hounds have previously earned a Field Champion title. If the idea of providing a Grand Field Championship title proves to be administratingly difficult or does not work out as envisioned, AKC will discontinue the program. 2) Allow the Next Best Qualifier move up. This would allow the NBQ to move up when a dog that placed is found to be ineligible. After some discussion to clarify when the move up would take place, made the motion to add Allow judges in the field Jim Garard seconded the motion. The item was amended to: Allow judges in the field to move up the NBQ if one of the four remaining hounds commits a faulty action that, in the opinion of the judge, results in the elimination of the hound. 12 For, 0 Against 3) Procedure 6. Paragraph 6-B. In first series, run dogs as drawn. Drop Should a second hound owned by the same person be drawn in the same brace or trio, that hound will change places with the next hound drawn which is not so owned. This change will be made with a hound drawn later if possible, but may be made with a hound drawn earlier if necessary. The running together of two or three such hounds may be permitted in the first series when a separation is impossible but in no other case. This item applies to traditional brace only. Chris Scranton made the motion to keep Gundog Brace separate, which was seconded by. 4
6 For, 1 Against Items for Discussion/Vote 2012 1) addressed Procedure 9, Beagle Hunting Test for Two Couple Pack, Number 17 where it states The running order cannot be changed under any circumstances once the packs have been drawn, except when packs that contain the same hound must run at the same time in both divisions. Mr. Garard would like consideration to be given to amend this rule to allow the owner/handler to request a change if a particular hound is running in multiple packs simultaneously or back to back. 12 For, 0 Against.the item will be brought back for a vote in 2012. 2) indicated he had been asked to address making professional handlers ineligible to judge National or licensed events. After some discussion made the motion to take a vote to put the item on next year s agenda. seconded the motion. 5
4 For, 8 Against the item will not be brought back. 3) made a motion to add for SPO only: A Beagle is a Derby throughout the calendar year, January 1 through December 31, if it has not reached two years of age prior to May 1 of that calendar year and a Derby can be an entry, one time only, in any specific Derby Run-off. The motion passed and the item will be brought back for a vote in 2012. Mel and Doug thanked everyone for their time and participation. The meeting was adjourned at 11:30 AM. 6
