Time to start thinking of entries for the Montgomery County KC Specialty Show. This is probably the finest venue in the East, and with the dinner evening before, a real gathering of the "clan." Foley is the Superintendent again and closing is September 28. The show a t Gwyn- AGENT-HANDLER: JIMMY BUTLER 3946 Puerco Canyon Malibu, California 55
edd Valley, Pennsylvania, is on October 10. No formal announcement on the judge as yet, b ut it just might be someone from across the Atlantic. Mrs. T. A. Kirk is doing the sweepstakes. This being TT's "anniversary specia l, " a look at Scotties in the East over the past few years might be in order. The most memorable moment, of course, was the BIS a t W estminster this February to the Stalter's great bitch, Ch. Carmichael's Fanfare, a truly fitting and deserved climax to an outstanding show career. "Mamie" is the proud mother of two fine male pups sired by Ch. Walsing Westwind of Barberry Knowe. Helen Gaither proud that her Ch. Gaidoune Gorgeous Hussy has a chieved the distinction of being the outsta nding producing dam of all times. Mrs. Charles Sandgran demonstrated to one a nd a ll that Scots can be trained for obedience, her Mr. P. P. Scot acquired his U. D. degree. All of these achievements have helped in the greatest revival the breed has seen in a number of years. More and more people are demonstrating a sincere interest in the Scot, and the sale of young puppies and show stock has never been better, but w here are a ll the new b reeders and exhibitors? Entries haven't picked up that much; too few new kennels prefixes are evident in catalogs, but many older ones a re less and less evident. What are the causes and what specific remedies can and should be taken? These are questions of serious import to us a ll; perhaps the STCA's new Scope Committee can a ddress itself to the problem - it begs solution. Random Thoughts: On Judges and Judging. ber of them, and the positive judge that looks for virtues and places his dogs by putting up the one that has the greatest number of good points. On the surface this might seem to be a very fine detail in how a judge looks at his exhibits. It has, however, given me pause to think, and somehow reminded me of another article some time ago on the difference in judging techniques between Allrounders and Breed Specialists. I believe there is a correlation between the two: the breed specialist being a negative judge and the allrounder a positive one. Why? Well, thet all-rounder cannot remember the exact detail of every one of a hundred different standards and therefore must approach judging by looking for positive general virtuessoundness, movement, condition, grooming, and so forth. The breed specialist, on the other hand, knows his standard well. He knows the finest interpretation of such detail as "moderately long," "not to thick," "peculiarly it's own," etc. In addition, he has a keen eye for whatever fault or faults is giving a breed trouble at that particular time. Since perfection is rare, he judges by faulting, that is, "Mmmm, a good head, but a little short - I'll take off a few points," or "ears set a little low - let's knock off a couple of points here." Which does the best job? I don't think you can generalize on this point, but I do feel they both can make a valuable contribution to the improvement of the breed by consistently following their individual approach. The all-rounder will keep the breed in balance, and the breed specialist will help maintain the DON MAYER AKC LICENSED HANDLER Route I, Taylor Road SANDUSKY, OHIO Phone: 419-626-0180 One hour from the William Hopkins (Cleveland) Airport CH. But wouldn't it be wonderful to have one judge combine these techniques and REALLY place the exhibits objectively by the breed standard? But then, that would almost make judging a science rather than an art. Perhaps someday! DONNA M. TERWILLIGER Professional ALL BREED HANDLER "Specializing in TERRIERS" 2011 N.
