Her pace signaled fierce determination. She had no idea that she was a Shih Tzu, only five lbs. fully grown at that. Because of her size, she would never be shown in a dog show. But her breeder knew she was very special. She had pushed all of her brothers and sisters around, so there was no question she was a keeper. She had been given to her recently married daughter. Today however, she had left her home where she ruled, because she was on a mission. A month earlier, her new owners had just bought their first home. A modest home, but nevertheless, it was her kingdom. Each day, her owners would go to work leaving her to lounge, nap and live royally befitting her ancestry. But not today. Today was different. Today she had work to do too. She had to leave her home to find help. There... five houses down on her quiet street she spotted a neighbor out on her porch. The little dog quickly ran up on her porch pawing at the woman, trying to tell her something. The neighbor had never seen her before but knew instantly that this visitor was special and probably someone s continued on page 9 In this issue: She s a Shih Tzu...1, 9 Photo Contest...1, 8 President s Message...2 Meeting Minutes...3 Holiday Party...3 Costume Party...4 Judging Panel suggestions...4 NJFDC Breeder Listing Form...5 NJDFC Guidelines and Requirements.6 NJFDC Rescue Listing Form...7 Brags...8 Dates to Remember...10 RKC PHOTO CONTEST What I did on my summer vacation a dog s perspective. Along with the joy that the season brings comes much rushing around as we prepare for time spent with friends and family. The month will fly by. Take a breather and join us for some fun at the RKC Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 12th. If you would like to attend but have not yet contacted Lorraine Fennemore to sign-up, please do very soon. The cost is $30 per person for a sit down dinner. And remember to bring a wrapped gift for the annual White Elephant insanity! We are already planning the 2013 point shows. If you have recommendations for our judging panel please let us know. There is a form in this issue of the Growl that you can fill out and return to me by January 15th. We are always eager to get input from our members, please don t be shy. Also this month there is a NJFDC Breeders Directory form in the Growl. If you would like to be included in their upcoming directory please fill out the form, make out a check to Ramapo Kennel Club for $35 and send them to me at 25 Van Blarcom Lane, Wyckoff, NJ 07481. I will present the applications to the Board of Directors for approval in January and then submit them to the NJFDC. Deadline for receipt of the application and check is January 2nd. 2013 promises to be a busy year for Ramapo. We will hold a Health Clinic at the Bergen Community College Vet Tech building in April. If you are interested in helping please contact Joan Murko (donohill@optimum.net) to see what you can do. We will also hold conformation, obedience and rally match shows (date and location to be determined). Patrick Dearborn is the conformation match show chairman and I am sure he will be happy to hear from volunteers. He can be emailed at elanshihtzu@gmail.com. The Obedience/Rally match show chair position remains open if someone would like to volunteer (hint, hint ). We will hold our two point shows in October, Sunday the 13th and Monday the 14th. We never turn a volunteer away, so please consider coming out to Sussex County to spend some time with us. Also in the fall will be the 5th annual AKC Meet the Breeds at the Jacob Javits Center. As you can see, we have a lot going on in the upcoming year. It is our members that ensure the success of our events. I encourage you to participate in as many activities as you can. Board Members There will be a working board meeting held at 7:30pm on Thursday, January 10th, at the VFW hall in Fairfield. Please remember to put this on your calendars. I wish everyone happy, healthy and safe holidays. Sharon 2

AFTER ALL, SHE S A SHIH TZU, continued from page 1 lost pet. The woman had picked her up in her arms. No, she didn t want to be held. The neighbor put her down. The dog began frantically pawing at her again. What do you want? the woman asked. The dog ran down the porch steps and back up again and again pawing at the woman s leg each time. Alright the woman said, show me where you live. The neighbor began to follow her. She had finally got it! Down the street the Shih Tzu hurriedly walked, frequently turning her head to see if the woman was still following her. She finally stopped. Here was her home. The kindly woman was about to pick her up but no the pawing began again. The woman looked up and saw a couple going in and out of the house. Although the woman had never met her new neighbors, she sensed that something wasn t right. She scooped up this frantic little dog and returned home and placed a phone call. Shortly after, the dog s owner had decided to come home for lunch that day. To her surprise, several police cars surrounded the house. In one of the policemen s arms was her little Shih Tzu. Two other police officers were putting the couple in a police car. The police explained a concerned neighbor had called them after suspecting something was wrong. She had been alerted by the cute little dog and thought it would do no harm to call them just in case. So, there the little dog was, returned to her owner, feeling very proud of herself as only a Shih Tzu can do. She had foiled a plot to burglarize her home. She was back in charge of her domain again, secure in the knowledge that she had done her job. To her own mirror, she was as large as a Doberman, strong as a Rottweiler and intelligent as a border collie. After all...she is a Shih Tzu. Submitted by Patrick Dearborn GOT STUFF?
