The magnificently conformed Group 1 winner, who was named Final Zafonic at one stage, was euthanised last week after a battle with Cancer. He won the Group 1 East Anglican Derby in 2009 and 2010 and became the first dog for thirty years to win back to back. He finished second in the 2008 English Derby, won the 2009 Birmingham Cup, 2008 UK Puppy Derby, 2010 East Anglican Challenge and the 2009 English Greyhound Of the Year. Greyhound-data rankings list his top rated offspring as follows: Whatta Good Size, Molito Mayhem, Skuzi, Clash Of Kings, Hougenie, Apatite, Mr. Shilling, Fearless John, Empire Allen, My Awesome Opal, Kidatee Dan, Jordan Allen, Revlon Babe, Fear The Rascal, Superfonic, Long View Belle, Eva Diva, Shakeby, Hyperparadise, Solarian*, Future Past, Divvy Up, Glorified Gee, Shannon s Might, Awesome Fear, Sukhoi, Our Beach Girl, Isla s Style, Coach Little and Femme Jolie. It is my long held theory that the greatest success for some imported sires over the years has come through their daughters at stud, so let s keep an eye out for some of them in coming months. RIP Fear Zafonic* Victorian Greyhound Weekly is edited and published by Roger J Clark, for Azpak Marketing PO Box 184, Grantville Vic, 3984. She has a previous litter of three dogs and three bitches on file, whelped in May 2015 by Cosmic Rumble. Keep Talking NEXT we have a nice litter of eight pups by the underrated sire, Mogambo (June 2006 Where s Pedro x Zarbo). Registered by Ripplebrook breeder, John McIntyre, the five dogs and three bitches are from the well bred bitch, Set To Talk (November 2009 Talk s Cheap x Lil Bit Cool), whose dam is by Big Daddy Cool x Lil Bit Loony (Prince Of Tigers x Loony Louise). She has winners on file from both of her other litters, whelped in March 2008 by Bond and January 2013 by Oaks Road and has close to a 100% winning strike rate from her 21 named offspring. Set To Talk raced 26 times, for nine wins and five placings, winning four times over 513 metres at Traralgon (29.74), twice over 515 metres at Sandown (29.49) and twice over 440 metres at Sale (25.34) where she also won over 520 metres (29.66). She has five named, all winners, from her first litter, whelped in April 2014, by Nolen, and also has a July 2015 litter of seven pups by Trewly Special.

Talking Breeding Continued. Smart Missile Litter Sulzanti Litter Sulzanti Smart Missile BALLARAT breeder, Daniel Meyer has a nice litter of eight pups on the list this week by stud newcomer, Smart Missile (July 2013 Nitro Burst x Oh Cee Ya), whose beautifully bred dam is by Premier Fantasy* x Oh Behave (Big Ginger Boy x Hunter Tylo). The six dogs and two bitches are from the beautifully bred, unraced bitch, Witchita Siyan (June 2009 Brett Lee x Spellbound Siyan), whose dam is by Larkhill Jo* x Witch Magic (Awesome Assassin x Star Witch). She is from a handy litter of five named, which included Paul s On Fire, Spell It Out, Yarrawood, Yarrawood Lee and Witchita Seven. Smart Missile is from a handy of five named, which included Cee Me Burst, Duna Runa, Go Go Spaghettio and Wonder Lace, who have all won races. Their dam, Oh Cee Ya also has winners on file from her two other litters, whelped in March 2011 by Velocette and March 2014 by Kinloch Brae*. On the track he raced 26 times for 12 wins and five placings, with his most important win being in the 2015 Sandown Speed Star where he recorded the sensational time of 29.01. He finished third in the Group 1 Paws Of Thunder and was a finalist in the Group 2 Black Top, and Group 2 Gosford Cup and the NSW National Sprint. Five of his wins were over 520 metres at Wentworth Park (29.43), three over the testing 535 metres at Richmond (30.65) and he also won over 515 metres at Sandown (29.01), 565 metres at Maitland (31.90), 515 metres at The Gardens (29.19) and 515 metres at Gosford (29.80). He is beautifully bred, by the under-rated Nitro Burst and with the Premier Fantasy* and Oh Behave bloodlines he looks a likely stud prospect. NEXT we have a litter of eight pups by another stud newcomer, the lightly raced speedster, Sulzanti (September 2013 Magic Sprite x Scissor Queen), whose dam is by Knocka Norris x Surf Queen (Surf Lorian x Queen Size). Registered by Drouin breeder, Tristan Dales, the four dogs and four bitches are from the beautifully bred bitch, Fluent (March 2013 Barcia Bale x Black Velveteen), whose dam is by Where s Pedro x Will You Behave (Token Prince x Oh Behave). She is from a litter of four named, which included Albatraoz, Aluminium and Snoop, with their dam having winners on file from her only other litter, whelped in February 2012 by Collision. On the track, Fluent raced 17 times for three wins and six placings, winning three times over 509 metres at Northam (29.57), with placings over 509 metres there and 512 metres at Mt Gambier. Sulzanti only raced 12 times for seven wins and two placings, winning four times over 515 metres at Sandown (29.09), twice over 525 metres at The Meadows (29.94) and also over 450 metres at Ballarat (25.22). He fell at his last race start over 515 metres at Sandown in November 2015 and did not race again. He certainly has the form and pedigree to do well at stud and I hope he gets enough bitches early on, to prove himself. Outsider Wins Perth Cup By Katherine Ernst for AGRA ENZO Crudeli is still coming to terms with being a group 1 winning trainer after taking out last Saturday night s Perth Cup (520m) at Cannington with his classy sprinter Equanimity. Having drawn beautifully in box one, Equanimity ($14.70) speared the lids in the $150,000-to-the-winner final, rolling straight to the early lead over Pepper Fire (box five) in the race around the first turn. The leading pair maintained their positions throughout the entirety of the race, with Equanimity defeating Pepper Fire ($5) by one-and-three-quarter lengths in a fast 29.94. Crudeli, who had three greyhounds engaged in the final, also nabbed third with Sassy Ginger ($10.60) (box seven); the race favourite, Astrozone (box four) finished fifth after missing the start for Paul Stuart. Equanimity was too good for Pepper Fire Despite all of his greyhounds starting at double figure odds, Crudeli thought they all had a chance of featuring in the finish. I thought we had a rough chance the final was an even race, Crudeli told Australian Racing Greyhound. No one picked any of mine to win, even though they had the ability, so they were all good prices. Box one is a definite advantage especially when you are a quick beginner and [Equanimity] was also helped by my dog in box two [Kid Kansas] which moved off the track a little bit. Pepper Fire is a great dog, but when Equanimity gets in front he just seems to be able to keep kicking he is a pretty talented dog. He is only 22-months-old so we were tossing up whether or not to put him in the series, but we decided to have a go because he has got good early pace. Three runs back he was racing in country grade fives, so it has been a massive step up in class and he has handled himself beautifully against the seasoned dogs. Equanimity, a son of Barcia Bale and She s Historic, has now won six of his 10 starts with a further - 14 - three minor placings. Owned by Robbie Brankstone, the blue dog was supported by a massive cheer squad trackside which helped to make the night even more memorable for team Crudeli. The owners had a big crowd there which was a great it made the win even better. They talk about grinning from ear to ear, but Robbie s smile was that big it was touching the back of his head. I don t get over excited, but it is definitely a good feeling to have won it. It has been a massive 12 months for Enzo Crudeli who also tasted success in 2016 when Shell Shocked won the Group 2 WA Derby. Consistent success on the track has affirmed Crudeli s decision to move to his current location at Nambeelup, near Mandurah, having previously lived more than 450km away from the action. We started out in Mullewa about 500km away from Perth and we bred pups there and had the dogs in our back yard which we used to train on a hot-rod track," he said. It got to the stage where we had a few too many in the back yard and when my job finished up in Mullewa we decided to come down this way and from there it s taken off. We have got boarding kennels here now and it got to the stage where we were going to go quiet with three or four greyhounds. Then a couple of my boys came to me and told me they wanted to get into the dogs again so we sat down and worked out a plan we figured out breeding was the way to go but we knew we needed something decent. We started out with some of the Wheeler-bred Bale dogs which were older in age but were still capable of running they kick started us. Now some of our youngsters are coming through so we have got a nice mix of Bale dogs and young dogs it s all going well. Crudeli gave special credit to his wife and children who are all involved in the industry, making the victory a family affair. We have always been a pretty close family my wife Di and I have got five children who have all been involved in greyhounds. As for what lies next for Equanimity, Crudeli said he is likely to target the upcoming Mandurah Sandgroper as well as some of the Puppy Classics in the near future, although he said he won t rule out travelling cross country if his star chaser earns an invite to the Group 1 Temlee (525m) at The Meadows on February 18. The Perth Cup first prize of $150,000 brings his overall prizemoney to $174,925.

Galaxy Final The other group 1 on Saturday night, the Group 1 Galaxy (715m) was taken out by SA star Bogie Bekim (box eight) for young trainer Ben Rawlings. South Australia s Bogie Bekim beats Victorian Trip To Eden Bogie Bekim ($2.80) (Bekim Bale - Bogie Skye) was able to give Ben Rawlings his biggest win in greyhound racing when his talented stayer Bogie Bekim proved too good in the Group 1 Galaxy final. The black dog sat close to the leader Woodvale Flyer ($6.50) from the start before pushing through along the fence approaching the home corner. He then held off the late finish of Victorian trained chaser Trip To Eden ($2.90) in 42.22 by half a length. Bogie Bekim had won 12 times from 39 starts and amassed $38,000 in stakes before tonight s win where he pocketed another $100,000 for owner Leslie Bein of Bogie Leigh fame. After the placed runners, the field finished in the following order: Big And Fast ($58.10), Topology ($6.90), Flying Kayla ($12.90), Tommy The Weapon ($41.80) and Walt Bale ($16.80). Bogie Bekim is a Black dog whelped April 2014 by Bekim Bale from Bogie Skye (Surf Lorian x Bogie Benz) he is raced by Les Bein and was trained by Ben Rawlings from Lewiston in South Australia. Bogie Bekim has raced 40 times for 13 wins and 12 placings with prizemoney of $138,129. The Galaxy first became a group race in 2002 as the major distance support race to the Perth Cup Carnival prior to then it was conducted as a minor feature and was first run in 1982. The other group race decided on the night was the Group 3 Perth Cup Consolation taken out by West On Maisie (Barcia Bale- Zelemar Fever). She showed speed to be able to cross to the lead from box 8 and then race to an all the win in the Gr 3 Consolation. The Chris Halse trained bitch was having just her 11th career start and she clocked a new PB 29.94 in scoring by a length over the fast finishing Mendoza Monelli. Greyhounds WA delivered once again with a spectacular evening of greyhound racing at their new venue. A healthy cup crowd turned out to greyhound racings main night in the West. The curtain fell on another very successful Chasing Carnival. The West has again showcased Australia s best chasers in the Sky Racing Group 1 Perth Cup ($150,000 to the winner) and Group 1 Galaxy ($100,000) and there is no doubt West Australia is a great place to race. The car must be safe and big enough so pups can't drag off to the dam. Theory is to course pups three to six months in a pack, a maximum of four to five times. Elite State lodge have coursed five litters this year and found this method works 100% Pups that chased in pack were all easy break ins. Wheeler kennels purchased a car and Brendan Wheeler said he was very happy with it. Longwood trainer Michael Barry has just ordered a car and Greyhound Gear are currently modifying it for him. Graham has a video of pups chasing the car, which he will email the link to, if you contact him. I have had a look at the video and it won t take long to convince you what a fantastic product this is, and just how keenly the pups chase after it. Looks certain to be a valuable tool for breeders to educate their young pups with, and from the look of it, it will make the breakers job much easier when the pups go to him, or if you are breaking your own pups in. 2017 Group 2 Cranbourne Cup It was a big night of racing at Cranbourne last Saturday night with four heats of the 2017 Cranbourne Cup run and won, but it was Don t Kid Me for Steven White who had punters scratching their heads, winning at the respectable odds of $6.80. A front running greyhound who made the move to Victoria in September has spent a good chunk of his racing career (49 starts, 17 wins and 18 minor placings) leading the field out of the boxes and he did exactly that in his Cranbourne Cup heat. Don t Kid Me has come from South Australia and has really impressed me. His last two runs have been on another level, Trainer Steven White explained. Recording a time of 30.266sec Don t Kid Me stopped the clock at 5.37sec to the first mark, 0.01 sections behind Big Flood s first split. Next week in his second group race appearance Don t Kid Me will have his work cut out for him as he competes against some of Victoria s fastest greyhounds. Jumping from box seven, the TAB have opened up Don t Kid Me paying $18. I think he is overs heading into the final but saying that I would be more confident if he had an inside draw. Big Flood and Don t Kid Me faced each other in a Group Listed race at Sandown. The two went hammer and tong to the winners post but Big Flood finished on top. Don t Kid Me will have to lead to actually win the race. There are a lot of strong dogs in Cranbourne Cup, so I will be happy to run a place. Summary: Group race finals are always hard for punters to try and sort out the winner. The winners and seconds in each of the heats come together in what has seen a terrific field assembled here. The $1.75 favourite, Big Flood, has only raced ten times for nine wins and a second, but it could be that lack of experience which might bring him undone. Dundee Osprey, with 44 starts for 18 wins and 12 placings looks the main Danger but there are plenty of chances. My selections are 4, 3, 1, and 8. Editor - 22 -
