In order to choose the proper food for your dog, there are three nutritional parameters which you should taking into account: first the size, second the age and third the specific nutritional needs of your dog. 1 Size 2 Age 3 Specific nutritional needs The size of a dog is naturally determined by the breed and depending on the breed, the adult weight can be classified into four categories. The average daily energy needs of small and large dogs are extremely different. A small dog has, expressed in kcal per kg body weight per day, almost twice the energy requirement of a large dog. As second parameter, the age of your dog plays a very important role in the nutritional pattern. A puppy from small breeds reaches its adult weight and adult size almost twice as fast as a puppy from large breeds. For a large breed puppy, it is very important to aim for moderate growth in order to prevent muscle or joint problems. This influences the required energy level, as well as the proper ratios of the necessary nutritional ingredients. The specific nutritional needs of dogs in the different phases of life are very different and are explained in the various nutritional programs.
