Sunshine Corgi Rescue September 26, 2017 Hello to all Sunshine Corgi Rescue Volunteers! Let me introduce myself. My name is Mary Jo Walker and at the beginning of 2017 I assumed the role of the new Treasurer for Sunshine Corgi Rescue. I personally want to thank all of the volunteers for being there when called upon to help out with whatever task is needed. The purpose of this letter is to reach out and touch base with everyone and to give you an update on things that have been going on in the rescue recently. First things first; Good News/ Bad News!! The Good News is that we have been very slow last year and this year, as far as Corgis being surrendered into our rescue program. That is one of the reasons you may not have had any calls for your services recently. We have 54 volunteers at this time. The Bad News is that we have been very slow last year and this year as far as Corgis being surrendered into our rescue program. No Corgis coming in means no Corgis to adopt out. At present, we have approximately 200 adoption applications and we have very few dogs in foster care. We had 15 adoptions in 2016 and so far 11 for 2017. That being said, at this point in time we are looking to make a few changes in the rescue program itself. Our current Rescue Coordinator, Jeff Mullen is wanting to step down and we are looking into a replacement for him. This position oversees all functions of the rescue, similar to a Chief Operations Officer overseeing the day to day functions. Also, we have lost our Intake Coordinator and are looking for a volunteer for that position. Tim Hochuli has graciously taken on the role as our new Adoption Coordinator. Kristen Davis is staying on as our Secretary and myself as Treasurer. Kitty Szaro and Susan Hochuli are staying on as Board Members at Large. The yearly Board Meeting for SCR was held on August 27, 2017 and we had a very productive day. Some of the ideas we are working on is how to expand our presence in the State of Florida and get our name out there so people do know that we exist. Working events and making contact with shelters and other rescue groups is one thing we would like to start with. For this we will need volunteers willing to go to events like The Blessing of the Animals, Tampa, coming up in October and The Florida Corgi Picnic coming up in November. Then there are also events in your own home towns or county's that may be put on by dog clubs or shelters. We have a canopy, table and banner that can be made available for events in your area. Flyers, business cards and other materials can definitely be mailed to you. We are wanting to reach out to the local shelters and rescue groups in your area. Obviously, one or two people cannot drive all over the state to talk to the shelters, but you, our volunteers, can go to your local city and county shelters and say hello, let them know that SCR is here to help if need be and leave some contact information. We can provide you with flyers or business cards to leave. There are other ideas that need a bit more discussion and planning on the table. We are always looking for people to get involved with the rescue. At some point, you may have helped out with our rescue program whether it was helping with intake dogs, adoptions, home checks, transport or events. Because it has been so slow we have not had to call on many of you to ask for your help. So that we can make our volunteer list current let me know If you would like to remain as an active volunteer or maybe get more involved. Please email me at bluevalleycorgis@yahoo.com. or you can call me at (321) 264-6296. If you wish to be removed from our list of volunteers with SCR please let me know, otherwise we will keep you up-to-date on what is going on. Also, your input is welcomed. Please feel free to contact any board member with any ideas, thoughts, recommendations, comments or problems. I am looking forward to hearing from you and hopefully working together to make a better and stronger rescue for corgis in need. Regards, Mary Jo Walker, Treasurer Sunshine Corgi Rescue www.sunshinecorgirescue.org October 2017 www.sunshinepwcc.com 3
